I also picked up Deadman...curious to see what they do with this character. Always liked the concept. People seem to be conflicted about the new Martian Manhunter. It seems hardcore fans of the character don't like the new direction...but fans who found the character boring like the new take. I will be looking forward to your opinions Dennis.

Alright time for some mini-reviews:

Justice League of America #1 ($3.99) - The debut issue of JLA deals mostly with the "big three" debating who they should allow on the team. A few of the team members are given a few pages of exposition and the bulk of the rest of the pages is centered around the Red Tornado. It is obvious that Meltzer has a great love for Red Tornado...and it really got me invested in a character that I don't normally care for. Overall, this was a great first issue. For fans of Meltzer...included in this issue is a portion of his new book. That seems to be why the price tag is a bit higher. I am really excited to see where this series goes.

Astonishing X-Men #16 ($2.99) - I posted some thoughts on this in the X-Men thread so I will keep this rather brief. I thought this was another strong issue from Joss and Cassaday. The Wolverine stuff was awesome and hilarious...and Joss was born to write Kitty. However, I thought the reveal of the "mutant to destroy Breakworld" was kind of telegraphed by Joss. Still...a fine read and a great run.

Ultimate Spider-Man #99 ($2.99) - There are a lot of folks out there that seem to hate Brian Michael Bendis. I am not one of them. I adore Powers...and I equally adore Ultimate Spider-Man. From the word "go" Bendis has crafted issue after issue of Spidey fun. It has come to the point where I don't even buy Marvel Proper Spidey books anymore. The only Spidey book I care about...is Ultimate Spidey. This issue is another solid one from Bendis and Bagley. Not much is answered about why Gwen is back...or why there are Parker clones...but there is plenty of big reveals in here to keep me wanting more. The Ultimate Clone Saga has been an excellent ride thus far...I can't wait to see how it ends. News of Bagley's departure after issue #110 has me sad...but as long as the stories are strong I will stick to this title.

Wasteland...I have heard incredible things about this title.

Anyone care to comment? Is it worth it to pick it up? Does it live up to the hype?

I posted this the other day in reviews, it does live up to the hype!

I mentioned Wasteland #1 in Dennis's Comic of the month thread so I thought a mini-review was in order. ( You can read the first half of issue #1 for free as a download from the Wasteland site link above. There's plenty of info on the plot synopsis too. )

Well the first thing that is going to hit you is the artwork - WOW!. Beautifully drawn by Christopher Mitten, who obviously has a great eye for cinematic composition - couple that with some truly excellent page layouts and you feel like you are reading the most wonderfully executed storyboard for a sci-fi/western movie ever!

That's the genre mix I would put this in, think Waterworld combined with Mad Max and you are getting there.

Writer Antony Johnston has apparently been planning this story for over 15 years, so naturally the plot seems very tight. A few key factors are revealed in this issue, but this is really a tone setter for the series ahead. Spoilers - Hints of tele-kinetics and physic healers, forgotten languages and lands, a worldwide mystery as to WTF happened to the planet. The blurbs for issues 2&3 sound like there are a lot more good ideas to come.......

Very impressed indeed, a really good read with fantastic art. I highly recommend it.

7/10.

Awesome!

Thanks so much for all of the links and stuff DLO. I have been told by many folks that this series is two issues in and looks to be weaving a very large universe. Some folks I have talked to have started comparing it PREACHER...simply because of the depth of the universe (obviously not the biblical/religious imagery).

I might have to pick up this title. How much does it cost.

Thanks for all of the info DOL. I am not in Paris anymore (unfortunately). I miss it to death. I was there for nearly three weeks.

I am most definitely going to give Wasteland a chance.

Watch out for Ultimates v2 Annual...because it takes place after the events of #12-13...and it tends to be kind of spoilerific.

It came out last week...August 24th. If you look at my posts...I post which comics come out each week. Also, DC sent out a press release saying that Woner Woman will now be coming out Bi-Monthly...because of all the delays...this will make it easier.

It's all because Heinberg can't write one comic while working on tv, much less two. As someone pointed out earlier, expect the six-issue run to take two years.

I am a couple of weeks behind on this, so here are a bunch of minireviews, in no particular order.\

Spoilers

Wonder Woman #2. I'm enjoying the Agent Diana Prince plot, a tribute to/lift from the 1968 story where Denny O'Neil and Mike Sekowsky took Diana's powers away and tried to turn her into Mrs. Peel with an old Asian mentor. Donna makes a more interesting Wonder Woman than Diana has for some time. Don't care for the introduction of the TV "twirl" when Diana wants a quick change to costume. And why can't Donna be on the covers? I know why, I just don't want to hear it.

Justice #7. The story remains fairly generic, something that could have come out of any attempt at a "grown-up" superhero story (pre-Watchmen and Dark Knight). The art, though not true Alex Ross, looks very nice if stiff. The Batcomputer files at the back are embarrassing, seemingly written by a teenage fanzine publisher.

X-Factor #10. "South of Wales, 1347"? Jamie has overreached, finally, on the romantic front. The identity of "Mr. C" was quite a shock. Satisfying Peter David script. I do wish they could get an artist to settle down with him, though Renato Arlen is fairly solid.

Top 10 & Teams in America's Best Comics A-Z. No one but Moore should touch these people. Peter Hogan's history of Neopolis is overwritten but isn't supposed to be the work of a professional. The character information at the end is handled clumsily. Art by original Top Ten team of Ha and Cannon looks great. Backup story is not worth the time Rick Veitch spent drawing it.

The Flash: The Fastest Man Alive #3. Bilson and Demeo handled Flash decently on TV, but the comic is flat and has too much material that's been done as well if not better in the past. They lack an understanding of how Barry Allen's costume worked and make it an integral part of the series! It's issue #3 and they already have a guest art team, never a good sign.

Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes #21. More Supergirl, less Brainiac and Dream Girl please. Decent work from Waid, but hardly his best. Get him back on Flash, please. Kitson's strong layouts help undistinguished finishers.

Jack of Fables #2. I want this to come out every week! I want to know how the story continues and I want to know it quickly. Never been a fan of artist Tony Akins. Why is Jack's jaw skewed to one side now?

Action Comics #842. No more issues for me. "Up, Up and Away!" was an interesting reintroduction to Superman, but I'm not finding the new Busiek/Nicieza story appealing. It reminds me too much of the Manga Khan character from the DeMatteis/Giffen JLA of the '80s. Dave Gibbons' cover is wonderful.

Rush City #1. Starts strongly, but the gadget-laden car is too much. The flashbacks with the young girl also start strongly but tell too much too quickly. Dixon's script is competent, the sort of thing he turned out long ago when he was writing five or six titles a month. Timothy Green II's art is hurt by the overly drab colors. Putting a color shadow over a cross-hatch shadow is just too much.

Deadman #1. So a man's spirit jumps back into his dead body and, in the old tradition, the body -- stays dead? It's all right, with some of the better John Watkiss art I've seen in years. Worth a look, but I'm unsure whether I'll pick up #2.

Martian Manhunter #1. When is this set relative to the story in Brave New World? Considering this is an attempt to reimagine the character, they're not doing a great deal. The "shock" of J'onn showing himself in public would be stronger had the art team not softened his appearance as shown in his last series. Again, decent. I think I'll buy #2.

Justice League of America #1. Some great dialogue by Brad Meltzer. Batman to Superman: "You only hesitate when you wear the glasses. What's wrong?" Ollie out, Roy in, Vixen from the dead-awful '80s league in. The Red Tornado plot shows some potential, more than the idea of putting the JLA back together.

52 Week Sixteen. I'm enjoying the romance of Adam and Isis -- seeing the loose adaptation of the TV show character affecting the hard, dark Marvel. Don't care for the Rene Montoya and Vic Sage/Question in Khandaq story. Vic (not "Charlie") might go out of the country, but what is the drunk, ex-cop Montoya up to? At least, in this full-length story, the characters get more than a few pages.

52 Week Seventeen: Adam, Buddy and Kori finally get off that damned planet and briefly run into Galactus, whose devilance they stole to power their ship. Oh? The alien also is Devilance, not Galactus? Then draw him differently. I have never cared for Lobo, never found him interesting as a straight threatening character or as a comedic threatening character. So he's a takeoff on Wolverine. Big deal. Trouble in Doggyland (name the reference) as Team Luthor (pardon me, American Dream Team) gets its first workout. The purple and green costumes are meant to be a fond reminder of times past but for me they stick out as an "homage".

Fell #7. Second-best comic of the month. In 16 pages, Warren Ellis and Mr. Ben Templesmith tell more story than some comics do in a year. Single-issue stories keep me coming back to see what new areas of Fell's psyche they'll examine next. All for $1.99. Buy this comic!

Astonishing X-Men #16. Thank you, Joss Whedon and John Cassaday, for making a superhero comic I actually wait for rather than expect. The Logan/James thing is getting a bit old, though. Danger and Ord together? Katherine's attack on Emma was inspiring. What's in the chamber? I think it's Cassandra Nova's body and that we've been seeing a mental projection all this time. "Yeahbuhwhat?"

Ain't that the truth. Nice set of reviews Dennis. I completely agree with your thoughts on JLA #1.

I wrote that review without plot points because I can't find my copy. Doesn't matter; everything I wrote was accurate.

Somebody help me out with the plot? I read 8 comics Wednesday night and I'm a little bleary.

zacks's AV is enormous, so I deleted his post, but this is what he wrote:

zacks19 wrote:Really into the new image series FELL. The illustrations are really unique and the story is up there too. Anyone who hasn't read a few issues should do so. It's got a realistic gritty crime feel to it.

Last month's Fell was my second-best comic of the month, following Escapists #2. BUY THIS BOOK!

I only have one regularly scheduled book tomorrow, and that's 52. I think my Milk and Cheese figures shipped, though.

I read v.1 TPB and found it dull, but v.2 and v.3 were quite interesting. Gonna follow it through the end via TPBs.

Not really, I do like my offbeat comics. My brother gave me the first 14 issues of 52 for my birthday, the story and artwork left me very unimpressed. No real humour or quirkyness at all.

I used to be very much a DC boy ( Batman, Green Lantern Corps, The Outsiders etc ) but the last 15 years or so I have stuck to smaller titles. I sway more towards Marvel now, with Vertigo and Wildstorm making up a lot of my reading. Although your Superman thread has got me into the Man of Steel in a big way at the 'mo.

Have you given All-Star Superman a shot? It is very quirky sci-fi but at the same time it has some very classic Superman moments in there. I would strongly suggest picking it up for your Superman fix...or Superman: Secret Identity. I am glad it got you in the Supes mood...that was the point!

I am a sucker for a good superhero story. I am a steady "big two" guy...it makes the off beat stuff I read extremely refreshing. After reading a Captain America story, reading an issue of Local just feels...new. I feel that I strike an excellent balance in the books that I read and for me...balance is important. I tend to read A LOT of classic literature and poetry...so a good superhero book really keeps me grounded, you know?

All Star Superman - I'm on it. Seen a lot of previews for it, the artwork looks great.

I tend to not read a lot of classic literature and poetry, thus my comic addiction. My brain power is not up to the classics, well it might be, I'm a lazy reader, I suppose......EDIT - I'm not saying reading comics is lazy BTW, far from it, I put no effort into reading books, I should try to strike a balance between them and comics. Just in time for the new book of the month thread... :D

So, a good superhero story - Who writes superheroes the best then?

Hm...who writes superheroes the best? Well Warren Ellis, and Grant Morrison can do no wrong. NEXTwave consistently cracks me up...while providing excellent, if not over-the-top, action. And as I said...All-Star Superman by Morrison rocks hard...not to mention...his recent run on Batman has been hilarious. No more brooding, inner dialogue, asshole batman...more batman vs. ninja man-bats...yes that is right...NINJA MAN BATS!

Johns has been all over the place...but for my money his run on the Flash was extremely solid...and really got me hooked into the character.

And Ed Brubaker has done some fun stuff for Cap and Daredevil.

Grant Morrison is writing the new Authority book ( due Oct ) so it will be interesting to compare, apparently it's badass.

I must confess something...I have never read a single issue of The Authority. I was just never into Wildstorm at the time. And I often tell myself to seek it out...I mean I love Warren Ellis so...I am just worried that I will need to know continuity stuff about Wildstorm to fully appreciate it.

No, The Authority were born from Stormwatch, but you don't need any real background info to enjoy it. You have to get Relentless & Under New Management, fucking amazing. Bryan Hitch artwork too!!

Personally, I'm an atheist in the voting booth and a theist in the movie theatre. I separate the morality of religion with the spirituality and solace of it. There is something boring about atheism.
