No, The Authority were born from Stormwatch, but you don't need any real background info to enjoy it. You have to get Relentless & Under New Management, fucking amazing. Bryan Hitch artwork too!!

LINK! with some SPOILERS!

Ellis moved The Authority further and further away from the rest of the Wildstorm universe, until they seemed to operate in a parallel reality. Planetary, which once was set firmly but off to one side of the Stormwatch and Authority continuities (characters crossed over between the two on occasion), seemed to stroll into its own little universe after the first storyline, collected in All Over the World and Other Stories. That was a good thing.

If you enjoy the early days (by far the best) of The Authority, checking out Ellis's Stormwatch TPBs could be fun. I've read each a couple of times, and his growth as a writer is surprising. Also, you get the introductions of all but one of the major Authority figures (very small joke there).

My library has a comics section which includes the first two Authority volumes. I found Under New Management sitting on a table yesterday and flipped through it. At one point, Jenny Sparks orders the defense systems on The Carrier activated. In the next panel, which I'd never properly read before, we see The Midnighter from the nose down with his mouth slightly open. In the background two of the female characters look amused. It struck me, after four or five readings of the story, that Midnighter is supposed to be experiencing a childish joy or even turned on a little -- and that's what the others find so funny.

Sometimes the obvious things take time to sink in.

Can't wait for the next:

Death in Dillinger
Wasteland
AS Superman
AS Batman
Anything Star Wars!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-)

I really liked someo f the new star wars titles, Boba Fett was funny and KNights of the Old Republic, although a bit to "prequelish" at times, it did have a nice dark side (No pun intended!) to it! :-)

I also got the first two issues of Rogue squadron leader and fucking loved them! But then they totally fell of the face of hte earth! Oh no, wait, sorry I did... :-)

I'm up for Wetworks, UFF and Runaways this week. Talking of the Wildstorm relaunch, The Authority by Morrison and Azzarello's Deathblow are on my list. Can't wait for Deathblow, it sounds great. Art looks very nice too.

Well, my new comics arrive in bulk next week. But I bought some old comics this week, on Wednesday as it happens.

I got Stormwatch #1! Yay, Find! ( not sure if it is the original arc or an early re-launch, I must investigate..... )
EDIT - yep it's the very first issue, by Lee & Clark - Chuffed, I love Stormwatch.

The Ray, #0, #3 & #4, I have #1 & #2 already.

A single issue of Marvel Strange Tales, featuring Cloak & Dagger - I wanted to see them in a early form, after Runaways. Also has A Doctor Strange story.

A 1988 Martian Manhunter four issue mini-series, by DeMatteis & Badger - looks good, great artwork.

OH FUCK ME! Is that Walking Dead Volume 5 I see! The next TPB!!! YES YES YES! Thank you god! Why do these take so long to come out!?! They are so fucking amazing!

Wowsers! I didn't think it was coming out just yet!

Looks like a cheap week for me - that and ZOmbie (don't know what it is but its zombies!) thats what I'm getting!

Got a few back issues turning up included Supreme Power 1 -5, Fell 5,6,7 and a Knights of hte Old Republic.

I asked this in a nother thread but I might as well ask here as well!

ANy UK comic lovers know a good store to get comics from? The ones I've seen (excluding Ebay) are so hard to navigate. The look crap and don't list stock very well. And most annoying of all they don't have a decent search engine!

I take it you want an online store.

I now buy from http://www.thecomicguru.com. They have a good stock and deliver really quickly. And their search engine works.

I used to buy from http://www.comicdomain.co.uk. Their service was okay and they sell all their comics bagged and boarded. But this year their standards dropped and so I switched to The Comic Guru.

Well I'm not usually up to date on my comics aquisitions, but on my latest trip to London I picked up some things primarily from recommendations I read right here in the Zone!!

The Escapists # 1-3 Terrific little series, great concept and execution. Not sure how I feel about the artwork, but I like the Escapist Comic artwork within the story (er, those who read this'll know what I'm talking about I guess).

Scott Pilgrim Vol. 1 and 2 This is the only series I haven't yet started from my latest grabs, but apparently Vol. 1 is signed... I only noticed after I'd bought it.

WE3 Wonderful, I'll be looking for Pride of Baghdad next. I <3 Brian K. Vaughn

All-Star Superman #4-5 I said it once and I'll say it again: this Superman mini-series PWNS all!!! I just love it... such an easy and yet delightful read. For an occasional comics customer such as myself, this is exactly the kind of superhero title I'm looking for. No background info needed, no multi-series tie-ins. Simple, straighforward, and brilliant!

The Eternals #1-3 Neil Gaiman + John Romita Jr.? Geekgasm... this is the only series I hadn't been hunting for beforehand. Saw it on the shelf, dug the look... after reading the first three I'm officially on board for this series. Nice little find for me.

Dennis how was Tree House Of Horrors? I didn't even know this was a regular thing, which being the Simpsons fan I am you'd think I would have known. Did you read that yet?

BTW I still haven't been able to find a #1 of Wastelands (I only have #2) is anyone still reading this? I noticed #3 came out but is it worth hunting down?

Tfactor - I think Wasteland is worth hunting down!

Issue 3 sees the start of its first sotry arc - so I think this will be a sign as to what they can deliver issue after issue. BUt already with the first 3 issues the history and myths etc that they have set up are excellent. I love apocolypse stuff and this has signs of promise.

Try and get issue 1, you cn get it on ebay, and give it a read up to and including issue 3, see how you get on. The end f issue 2 was the weakest bit so far. BUt everything else is so strong it makes up for it.

Infact I just remebered the dark note that issue 3 ended on...ohhhh yeah... this worth hunting down... for now... :-)

Right, I'm off to the comic book store, see ya'll when I return

Okay, so I've got a lot of comics that turned up today that I ain't opened yet, but they are back issues and some hard to finds that I've gotten off of ebay

the ones I got on new release day, today, are as follows:

Civil War #1 (alternate cover for 2nd print run) - I have first print but now this. Although this is the first time I've read it (just read it over lunch) and I love it! great start - and I'm a DC man! :-) )

Zombie - Under the MAX label - its zombies.... :-)

Treehouse of Horror - for the missus but they are excellent. I've been surprised by the quality of writing for these comics! Easily as good as the episodes!

Zombies - I love that the world is Zombie mad right now! More zombies... :-)

And most importantly of all... the latest installment in one of the greatest comic endevaours ever!

The one that got me back into comics (along with 30 Days of NIght)....

THE WALKING DEAD Volume FIVE!!!! The BEst Defence!

Oh yeah...

Reviews coming up on the review thread as and when I've read em...

What everyone else get? :-)

It was fun. They've done this every year for some time. This year it was an extra-large issue but with only three stories, all by writer/artists. I liked Kyle Baker's story the most, will put up brief review over the weekend. Really. An entire month to catch up on while contemplating Best Comic of the Month. The big thing about Treehouse of Horror is that with the famous artists featured the characters go off-model to some degree. It's a bit disconcerting after sixty years of licensed animation comics often looking like cel xeroxes.

ETA: My shop didn't get a couple of boxes, so Powers, Frontline and Daily Bugle didn't show. I'll have to catch them next week.

Yes, but I think they had to take that off the cover and solicits because it's not there anymore.

silentbobafett wrote:Any :-) good?

It's been pretty consistently terrible, not to my liking, and every issue feels like I've been shortchanged a few pages.

I only picked up this issue because the guy ordered it for me (even though I wiped it from my list) and probably no one else would buy it.

Also, last week they didn't get a box with Shadowpact, Birds of Prey, and a few other issues.

All righty, just got home from the local bookstore... add to my acquisitions the following:

The Goon #18 - i think it's time Powell stretched out the characters/goonverse a little more. lovely artwork, funny book, but retreading familiar territory. we'll see how #18 turns out as it has the funniest secondary character of them all: Lagarto Hombre!!!

Fell #6 - I love the hell out of this series. It's cheap, the writing's great, and Templesmith is a fantastic artist. Plus each story is self-contained... do we really need more than that?

Pride of Baghdad - I was going to the bookstore to order this, so obviously when I saw it sitting on the shelf I didn't hesitate.

My dealers said this has been happening more and more frequently. Boxes don't show, boxes are mis-packed, comics are damaged in undamaged boxes. Diamond needs some competition again.

OK, here's some bits on what I have read so far -

Runaways 20 - Loved it, great dialogue as KC pointed out the other day, I love where BKV is taking Chase. Molly ROCKS!

Escapists 3 - Another quality issue, loved the section of JSA artwork with Case leading Max into the art of inking, great dialogue for that section too. Nice ending, this is only going to get better.

Loveless 10 - I love this comic, Frusin's artwork is fantastic and Azzarello really knows how to balance the social, political and historical aspects beautifully, always exciting, violent and intelligent.

Wetworks 1 - I thought this was OK, I like team books and this has some interesting character relationships to explore, bit of a slow start, but I will give Carey a few more issues to get going as it's an ongoing title. Portacio's artwork is good, some interesting panel/page layouts.

1602 Fantastick Four 1 - Great popcorn comic, Doom has kidnapped Shakespeare, The FF are going to get him back, simple premise apart from the twist Susan is pregnant with Reed's child...... Looking forward to the next issue.

UFF 33 & 34 - 33 is real slow, and a little confusing with the slew of new characters, 34 remedies that very well, I cannot wait for the actual God War to kick off now. I'll stick with this arc purely for Ferry's art - fucking outstanding.

Ex Machina 23 - WOW!!! Amazing issue, Harris's new ink-washing technique is bloody beautiful, I know I said the same thing last month but wow, it's great to look at. Smoke Smoke is going from strength to strength, love the daydream Mitchell has with the dog-man, nice link into the story arc of the recent specials and the last 3 pages? - hell yeah! next issue is going to be badass!

Rokkin 3 - This book is great, really simple storytelling, drawing on many areas of mythology, with a great central character in Arness. His new companion Evy is HOT! and brutal at the same time. If you want to see bloodthirsty fighting,( including the main character biting of the face of an attacker - Blimey! ) and some really brilliant monster and location design ALL in the artistic style of Disney, ( Nick Bradshaw is a great artist ) this is for you.

Phonogram 2 - As good as issue 1, more characters are introduced and we start to learn more about Kohl's past. This is going to be a great fantasy series.

Agents of Atlas 2 - Reading this series as Teh Balm recommended it to me, enjoying it a lot so far. Very funny dialogue inserted into a clever twist and turns plot, that just keeps getting crazier with every turn of the page. Will make a good TPB.

It's Phil Hester and Ande Parks (who I knew very briefly 15 years ago when they hung around with a friend of mine and all three drew comics for a tiny little company out of Nebraska). They're a solid team and can handle action (Green Arrow). Comedy is harder, but they are talented. I hate the premise, though.

Ok guys! This is what I picked up:

A Nightmare on Elm Stree #1 - new series not Paranoid! :-)

Ant Man #1 - just seeing what I think of the character in antcipation of Edgar Wrights touch of genius (I'm not bias at all! :-) )

Frontline (Civil War) Issues 1, 2 and 3

Not a very busy week!!!

Waiting on a comic from a new online store - it ain't turne dup yet and they ain't returning my e-mails - so I'm getting worried! Eek!

But hoping next week has more beauties for me! :-)

I was naughty and stayed up to read Warsong #2. It was *much* better than the first installment (even if there isn't alot of tension in Wolverine getting torched anymore). It's a good twist on the Stepford Cuckoos.

My thought is that I won't be buying Ant Man #2.

And I do buy the Invincible and Walking Dead trades, sight unseen.

Rather dull, in the way Nextwave is dull. Comedy superguys are tough to write. Kirkman is talented, but the premise was weak and the execution is flat. The art isn't particuarly good, either. I won't be picking up #2.

burl and I both hated the writing (IIRC) and Adam and I both hated the art. I just don't think Ellis does teh funny very well. Little bits, yes; a whole book, no. That cover is funny. Little bits.
