CIVIL WAR--NEW MASSIVE SPOILERS- BEWARE!!!!!!

PostPosted: Thu Feb 02, 2006 11:52 am
by JackKnight
I know this was brought up in Colin's solicitations sticky but I thought it might be an okay standalone topic.

Does anyone have any of the details or conjectures on what this whole Civil War that Marvel is cooking up? I'm sort of assuming that the split will be between pro and anti mutant groups but given the House of M and the relatively small number of mutants left that doesn't quite ring true.

Anyone?

I think the Jews are going to rebel. Kitty Pryde, the only Jew super-hero I can think of, will lead them all.

Ben Grimm is Jewish too, he just doesn't like to make a big deal about it.

Is that true??!?! I mean I always assumed he was circumcised, because the alternative would be really weird to contemplate. But I guess that clinches it.

If he wasn't circumcised then, he's circumcised now. Long have I pondered what poor Ben suffered when the cosmic rays hit his privates. No answers yet.

Newsarama released the penciled cover to Civil War #1 by Michael Turner about a week ago, and it's been my background since. Can't wait to get the colored version.

Nice piece of work, but it's awfully busy. Decades ago, some editor said, "fans like lots of lines."

I wonder why Yellowjacket's getting the spotlight in that picture. He's not currently active in the Marvel Universe, is he...? And if not, I guess he will be soon.

I also found that peculiar. And note the "tear" down the center with Cappy in the center. I am guessing that we are going to see some hero on hero action.

If only the Jedi were involved so we could finally see the X-Men kick their stupid asses.

"Hey guys... If those DC fools can't get along, well neither can we!"
Then Logan pokes Spidey in the other eye.

Okay I got this from a legitimate source whose name rhymes with Polin:

<SPOILER>

Rhymes with Polin wrote:all these heroes are asked by the govt to register their identities those who do not are seen as terrorists

</SPOILER>

I'd heard that, Rhymes with Hurl, and I like it. Clearly, the mutants aren't gonna be so happy about it.

Yeah, this is actually a really cool idea. Let's see how Marvel can fucker it up.

Oh and everyone note the lack of "technical arms" on the Civil War cover... sheesh.

Dude, who gives a shit about the mutants? This isn't 1996. Not every company-wide crossover centers around the X-Men.

Umm, okay... Never said it would center around the X-Men--or that it had to--just that mutants would be pissed. 'Cause, y'know, there was that whole Mutant Registration Act floating around FOREVER.

This centers around the Patriot Act, not the Mutant Registration Act. Also, being that there's only 198 mutants left, I think the government has a pretty good idea who they all are.

Can you list them, comic book guy? And I don't mean by looking it up. List them off the top of your head.

why isn't spidey in his new iron-suit on that cover?

could it be that the suit is already gone by then?!?!

Interesting point, Batman.

What?!? Iron Spidey is the best idea anyone's ever had about anything.

Y'know, that's the thing though: as crappy as the suit is, I like the idea of Iron Man taking Spider-Man under his wing.

JMS had a really good interview up on this over at Newsarama.

Yeah, JMS interviews are always good and he does a really good job of rationalizing all his decisions. Then you read the comics....

you know that it's going to end in heartbreak. Spidey's going to reject Iron Man, or vice-versa.

I think all the heroes are upset that Stark didn't make them Ironsuits, that's why Cap has no pants on the cover.

I'm just glad it isn't the literal Civil War fka Marvel 1861:
During a Manhattan Civil War re-enactment, Onslaught returns, spiking the punchbowl with schnapps, then timewarping everyone back to the actual North vs. South conflict.

But with wizards and stuff.

LOL BC. That would be hell of a party tho. But spiking the punch with Schnapps? C'mon, it'd have to be Everclear at the very least, or maybe wood grain alcohol. ;-)

and supposedly, the spider pinchers on spider-mans new armor, are going to give birth to 8000 new mutants, thus, causing the same thing to start over again...

and then peter will die...again....and will come back, and won't need the suit anymore!

That thing is fucking awesome. I love the Robert Richardson-like overexposed lighting on Cap.

And I really dig the tag "A Marvel Comics Event in Seven Parts." Classy.

Turner is a bit overrated not to say he's not good because he is, I just don't see what people love about his work. It reminds me of the redindant art of the 90's

If the spoiler posted at the beginning of this thread is true...then that makes me laugh saying as in the JSA issue that came out this week...the same plot line happened but during the McCarthy era...

Spoilers (I guess)

The members of the JSA were told to give up their identity's or they would be viewed as Communists, so instead they disbandded.

End of Spoilers...

I just thought that was an interesting parallel.

The cover looks better in color, but it's still awfully fucking busy. The explosion debris (or whatever it is) radiating from the figures doesn't help any.

Leck, that JSA plot is more than twenty years old. It was in America vs. of the Justice Society, by Roy Thomas and I forget the artist and was meant to explain the retirement of most Golden Age heroes until "Flash of Two Worlds."

Adam Balm wrote:Yeah, JMS interviews are always good and he does a really good job of rationalizing all his decisions. Then you read the comics....

I just read the interview and JMS almost made me interested in the whole Iron Spidey/Other thing. I think this is why:

JMS talks about the story as an attempt to try something new by bending the boundries of continuity and looking at things from different angles. He says its all temporary, nothing so drastic it can't be reveresed later and that he's ultimately hoping to reveal new angles to the characters involved.

But the reason I won't read any of this and have yet to be interested is due to the way Marvel (and Joey Q) talk about these stories:

OMG! Did you see this shit? F-ing Awesome! I was like talking to my bro and he was like writing this story so I totally sketched this thing and WTF, IT'STHEGREATESTTHINGEVER!!!! You totally gotta buy this cuz holy crap, I mean check it out! It's Awesome!

Does anyone else see this? Or is it just me?

That spoiler above makes me sort of interested.

Kaga, I really think that needs to be reduced by about 30%. Even with side-scroll it won't all fit on the screen.

Oh I understand that the JSA storyline was old. I was merely trying to articulate that this whole Marvel Civil War storyline seems to be rehashing an already familiar story. (I understand that this happens a lot in comics, but they are hyping this us so much that I think its funny that they are making this seem like it has never happened, when it has happened.)

Sorry, sir. It's hard to tell if an old item isn't referenced. Quite the coincidence.

I'm pretty sure we are, just with different eyes. Say, weren't you the one who was singing praises for Roger Cruz a few months back?
