Mine arrived from amazon today. They had said I wouldnt get it until Dec 4th...so maybe soon Pacino.

Read it. Liked it. I give it Good +. Not great. But def Good +. Though at the end of it, I find myself filled more by anger than entertainment as I realize O'Malley probably won't get around to finishing Vol 5 for more than a year.

BTW, I love the Phillip Bond pin-up in the back.

So I read Scott Pilgrim Gets It Together in one sitting last night... it was pretty awesome, but I'm not sure I'd call it the best Scott Pilgrim yet.

A couple of things started nagging at me in the middle third or so...

The story was off to a hilarious start, with some of the book's best gags frantically rapid-fired, but things start to border on the silly from there, and the silliness is maintained, with some laugh-out-loud moments (I never use that expression, but here it is exactly what happened: I LOLed).

Scott the r-tard was too repetitive here, whereas in the previous volumes it wasn't so much in our faces... he would always be doing things that somehow make up for the occasional bit of r-tardation in the other books.

Here, he sort of mopes around a lot, gets called all sorts of names, then the half-assed Lisa Miller sub-plot kicks in, but there isn't any sense of "threat" to Scott's world in this volume.

The previous books had mainly been about getting with Ramona, the girl of his dreams... then dealing with underaged Knives, doing gigs with Sex Bob-omb, etc etc.

In Vol 4 O'Malley didn't take any chances with Scott, it's too safe, too predictable (*shock*), that is until Scott gets in an argument with Ramona. Prolly the darkest moment of the entire series, O'Malley brought a lot of punky power in the depiction of those scenes, and that essentially saves the book.

Maybe it's been too much time since Vol 3 (that's when I started reading the series), and as a result I might've built up the book in my mind to something it, or probably any other book, could not reach in reality.

So after all of that, the book still shines as one fine comic in a general sense, even though I had more to criticize here than I did for the other books (I didn't criticize the other books).

The artwork is top-notch, the references are mostly terrific, some of the secondary characters don't shine as much as in the previous books, the story is good but if you think about it this has definitely been a transitory portion of the Scott Pilgrim saga: nothing really changes in the end except for **SPOILER** the fact that Scott and Ramona's relationship has been strengthened, whereas before there was always the sense of it standing on thin ice.

8/10 (very good - excellent, but for a Scott Pilgrim GN it's probably one of the lowest scores)

Still, can't wait for Vol. 5.

NOTE: I have not gone into much detail about the awesomeness of the book because its awesomeness is difficult to describe... it's just awesome, ok? READ IT!!!

NOTE 2: I'm going to reread everything from Vol. 1, maybe I didn't get into this one so much because it had been so long since the last book.

Finally got my own copy of Precious Little Life last week and realized how crude it all was compared to v.2 and especially Infinite Sadness. The song during the big fight was superfluous and the art was dreadful.

It's remarkably fun, though.

I got it on the first day, read it on the same... I thought vol. 5 was a step up from vol. 4, definitely dark, unexpected, but setting things up nicely I find for the finale. Still there were some pretty funny moments, and O'Malley does a decent job retaining the book's brand of humor while giving us something new.

I read this a couple of days ago. And yes, it was darker. I guess I should've figured out what I had in store for me from that opening drawing of Ramona standing on a leaf-strewn street. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but is this the first Scott Pilgrim book not to start with a few inked pages before settling down to B&W [seen that technique in a lot of mangas]? I'd check to find out, but my copies of the other four have been permanently borrowed.

I think I might have to give it a re-read in context with the others to work out where I'd place it out of the 5 of them. I know there was a whole lot more kvetching this time around and maybe not quite so much crazy fun. Although I dug Ramona's lightbulb head.

I also don't think I liked the way the plot-strand of Scott cheating on Knives and Ramona with each other was shoe-horned in there. It was just one of those soapy, forced writerly conflict thangs.

Still, I got the same urge to write a character bio on everyone in the Scottverse like I did at the end of the last four (e.g. Ramona's constant changing of her style is a sign of how uncomfortable she is in her own skin; Kim's like the Moe Tucker bull dyke-lookin' drummer chick of SP, even though she's a total little girl underneath it all etc. etc.).

Note to O'Malley if he's reading this (and I know he checks out aintitcool, 'cause he responded to a talkbacker the other day), I demand more Wallace. Dude's still my favourite character, even though in real life his habit of calling everyone "Guy" would drive me spare.

I just caught up.

Egads! What a book! I read Vol. 1 so long ago, but never really had the urge to seek out the rest. Something came over me a few months ago and I decided to give it another go. I have been meaning to drop in here and write about it. So, um, yeah here I am!

I simply can't say enough. Such a rad book. I want more! and I want it now!

Many thanks to KCBC for bringing this to my attention so very long ago.

It could be a tentative release date indeed, but O'Malley has been known to push it by 2-3 months. In any case he has a huge incentive to release the final volume around the same time as the movie's release, that was always the plan, so let's hope his Irish half doesn't hold him back too much, eh? /efbr

Personally, I'm anticipating the new volume about three times more than the movie. Edgar Wright is a very cool guy and all, but it's the comics that first tweaked my nipples. The movie I expect to be highly watchable mush.

edit: OK, that's sort of bullshit. I've been reading a bunch of early reviews and the word has been unanimous so far: this is an incredibly fun film.

Now's probably the perfect time to start, 'cause if you take about three months to go through the first five volumes, you'd be done just before the sixth one comes out... which if according to schedule, should be just before the movie comes out!

I just finished it. So much to take it. But I loved it. The book is thick, like around 240 pgs.. I think that's just about as long as vol 4. Things were explained. Matters resolved. Scott grew up a bit.

FUCKING STEPHEN IS Dumbledore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

O'Malley out shined himself IMO The story came full circle, and that art is fantastic. Comparing this vol to vol 1 is like looking at a grade schooler to a university student. (not saying that's a bad thing, just how much O"Malley has grown)

I'll be reading this a dozen more times this week during con, and telling O'Malley in person.. THANK YOU!

Yeah it's a slightly bigger book than the other volumes, but it reads super fast because there are pages of just imagery, no dialogue.

Artwork-wise, certainly O'Malley spent more time drawing some panels, but his style hasn't changed *too* much over all. It seems with each new volume Scott Pilgrim looks different, in this one he looks like a r-tarded cute mutant.

There are some funny parts in the first half of the book, but then things start to get a little more serious as the ultimate showdown looms.

Bad on me though for not having reread the series before taking a crack at this last volume. Didn't have time in the past couple of weeks, and once I had my hands on vol. 6 I couldn't help myself... so some of the details were a bit lost on me in terms of their significance.

There aren't any crazy surprises in the book, things advance as you would expect. At the climax there is a sense of frantic madness, the book actually gets a little weird momentarily.

I can't wait 'til vol. 7 comes out.

To the best of my knowledge, this is the last volume O'Malley has planned. The story built to Scott's confrontation with Gideon and his acquiring "the power of understanding" as it would affect his relationship with Ramona.

But I could be wrong.
