Fantastic Four

Postby doglips on Sun Jun 04, 2006 7:00 pm

This thread is for all things FF related........

I recently bought and read the Ultimate FF hardcover and enjoyed it a great deal, so now I am trying unsuccessfully to patiently await my Ultimate FF 2 Hardcover ( out in July ) so I can catch up to issue 20.

So as I am currently enjoying all things FF what do you guys think about This - looks really good, amazing art.....

I haven't really enjoyed the JMS Fantastic Four as of late. All of this stuff with Doom and Thor's Hammer has been kind of weak, IMO.

For the most part I have loved the Ultimate Fantastic Four and can't wait for Mike Carey's run on the book.

If anyone is interested they should check out Marvel Adventures Fantastic Four. It is a really fun title.

Holy crap, couldn't agree more on Marvel Adventures. I was really surprised to be entertained by something that you'd figure has been dumbed down for children.

JMS's run....bleh. It seems these days he has one tone he can write, and it's maudlin. He writes an entire series that's just one long, sad, quiet moment. It's the kind of thing people write thinking they're being deep and reflective, when for most people they're just being pretentious and plain dull.

I'm a bigger fan of the Marvel Age FF than the Ultimate FF. Of course I'm a bigger fan of classic FF. I've followed it for years, I've only a year or two just dropped the book finally after like 20 some years of fandom. I have not been happy with it lately.

I was a fan of Claremont's run on the FF unlike most other people.

But I can say I think that alot of people on alot of books have improved on what stan and Jack did here and there, but FF seems to be their strongest book ever, and certain issues of stan and |Jack still seem better than anything anyone else has put out since. Like this Man This Monster, I love that issue.

|I like Marvel age better because it retells the old stan and jack stuff. Ultimate FF has just lost it for me. I love the ultimate books, but this is too far off base. Doom is just Movie Doom, the child genius aspect I didn't care for either. The only thing I feel they improved on was moleman.

I never really understood why Marvel gave JMS the keys to their empire so to speak. I mean the guy is writing Amazing Spider-Man and Fantastic Four??? I actually liked the idea of the government trying to use the cosmic event that changed the FF to try and create super soldiers. However, like most things JMS does, it was poorly executed. And what was with Marvel putting Doom and Thor's hammer on the cover of issue #536? The way the book was laid out it appeared that JMS was trying to make that a surprise, but the surprise was ruined the moment you saw the cover.

Glad to see that someone else is reading and enjoying Marvel Adventures. It really proves that you can have stand alone issues and not just write so the story can be collected in trades. They just released a new Marvel Adventures Avengers and its excellent too. They should really let Jeff Parker get his hands on a Marvel Proper title.

Yeah, and it's interesting. A friend of mine had a run on Adventures (Before it was relaunched yet again) and he told me that outside the direct market, this line sells better than outside of the Ultimate books. Just Wal-Mart alone is insane, people were saying.

So yeah, apparently you and I are not the only ones digging it.

Awesome. I am only 20 (so I don't have kids) but if I did have kids I would totally love to share the Marvel Adventures with them. Hopefully they stick around this time, I am sick of all the relaunches and stuff they have been doing with them lately.

Which writer would you folks like to see take over the Fantastic Four proper when JMS is finished with it?

I figured you would hold out for a Doctor Who comic!

I wouldn't mind it if Ellis got to give it a try. Personally, I enjoyed his work on UFF and would like to see how he could handle the 616 universe. Even though he is exclusive to DC, I would LOVE to see Johns write the FF.

I'd go for Who or FF.

I've already outlined my FF pitch though.

I wouldn't mind seeing Jeff Johns but that won't happen.

Maybee millar or whoever it is that wrote ultimates.

Millar is a likely choice. He is writing UFF write now, so it isn't that far fetched.

this is one of the best purchases |I've made. I spent years trying to finish my FF collection, and with one quick buy I did, in a way.

Scroll down, it's there. I love it 40 years of FF. I've got a few big comic boxes full of these issues I spent most my life collecting and now with the magic od DVD technology I fit those and more on one disk.

After Astonishing, I think the obvious choice is Joss Whedon.

If they bring in someone outside of comics, I'd like to see Rudy Rucker or Charles Stross.

Whedon wouldn't be a bad choice, but lets face it the guy can't deliver a monthly series. He just doesn't have enough time.

Neil Gaiman would be awesome to see do about twelve or so issues, just to see what he would do with it. I am convinced he would make something that would fit in nicely and be able to put the book back on track.

That will never happen.

I CAN'T FUCKING WAIT. Especially with Pascual Ferry on the art. I asked Carey at a convention what he intended to do with the book.

Does this mean we have to start a Trial Of Adam Balm thread?

I am excited for Carey's run on UFF. I have never really focused on the art of a book. I just know if I think an art takes away or adds to the book. But to be honest, that Pascual Ferry art looks gorgeous. It has the potential to be a defining run on the series.

Let me clarify.

I'm excited that someone of Carey's talent is taking on the title, and I have no doubt that it'll be good. But I think it sounds like his run will fall more under 'weird fantasy' than science fiction. I get kind of bored when stuff gets too grand scale and removed from reality. (Which probably explains why I'm more of a Marvel fan than a DC fan.) I don't think Carey's too interested in street-level 'world right outside your window' stories that have been the hallmark of the Ultimate line. Which isn't a bad thing at all, really. Like I said, I have no doubt that it will most likely be the best written run on the title so far.

I was impressed with the two issues he's done so far, ditto the Ultimate X-Men FF crossover two parter.

BTW, here's a more detailed, but older, promo pic for those who haven't seen it:

I was pretty psyched when I saw it except for the light gray/white part with the red stripe. WTF is that about?

Anyway, it's set to air on Cartoon Network this fall. You can read more about it here:

I could not work out what was going on with the stripe in the pic I posted, I'd rather have them with more blue but they are just giving the show it's own identity I suppose. I want to see what they do with Doom & Galactus.

Lets hope the writing is good, and does not turn it's back on the sci-fi.

I don't have a problem with the costumes so much (they're always changing up the look here and there), but I can really do without Ben having the "4" emblazoned directly onto his chest. At least put him in, like, a singlet type uniform (as he's had at times in the past) if he HAS to wear the logo.

Actually that's just in an earlier design of the character that he has that "4" painted on him. In later versions he has some sort of Kanji character on his chest that I can't identify.

But hell, I'm really not complaining. They got Reed to look cooler than he has in decades. Wow, a guy who stretches not looking completely laughable. I still can't believe my eyes.
