Buffy the Vampire Slayer: "Season Eight"

Graphic novels. Weekly rags. The @$$holes.

I don't think a human-sized vamp would be able to pierce Dawn's skin, as big as she is. And even if he did, how much blood would he have to drink to drain her and then make her drink, too?

Anyhoo, yeah, Buffy seems off. Her whole experimentation seemed off, but it's just another rung on the ladder of clueless Buffy's been on lately. She doesn't seem like she should be after "Chosen".

That being said, this last arc was hella cool! I loved Dawn rampaging through Tokyo and the big fight that ensued, plus all the witty jokes. And now Dracula is just a normal vamp! I loved his line about the vampire side of him not being the side people need to worry about. Heh heh.

Fray is in the next issue, right? What's up with that?!

Loved the recent issue. It made me laugh out loud several times. Goddard has written the best arc of the series thus far. I hope what comes next lives up to what Goddard has done.

Mecha Dawn = 100% hilarity.

I didn't like the Mecha Dawn thing. But other than that, it had some high points. I wouldn't call it the best arc so far, though.

What WOULD you consider the best arc? Besides this one, the only arc I feel could be at all considered was BKV's. However, his didn't feel as epic and it didn't have the humor + plot moving moments as this one. In my eyes, that makes this the clear winner of "best arc thus far."

Feel free to disagree.

OH I DO! I don't know which is the best arc. Just not this one. It got way too silly at the end.

BAH! That is the easy way out! Dig in, man. Take a side. Trench warfare!

But seriously, I am not sure why the sillyness is a bad thing. I mean, on the show, due to budget restrictions and TV as a medium, they kind of tethered themselves to a reality. It had fantasy elements, to be sure, but there was always more than a hint of the "real." I don't really expect that from comic books. Things are going to be silly because, well, they CAN be silly. And if they aren't silly, it can get a bit too boring.

Now, this assumes I am taking your use of the word silly literally. That is, that you are referring to giant mecha Dawns and all that goofy stuff. But if you are referring to Buffy's lesbian romps as "silly," meaning dumb and trivial, well that is a different story.*

Still, this stands as my favorite arc of the comic. Despite its sillyness, whatever the meaning.

*Although, I did forgive the first instance as something acceptable, whereas this last one seemed a bit excessive especially with the art. It just seemed like fanboy porn at that point.

I now expect every female character to end up in bed with another female at some point. And I expect the drawings to be even more lurid.

If Brian K. Vaugh was the one who did the evil English aristrocrat chick arc, then I'm totally with you there. Best storyline so far. Also the start of that storyline boasted the best cover, imho. The one where Faith spraypainted her name over Buffy's. Says it all, really.

I've kind of been enjoying the silliness factor. It took a little getting used to though. And the Buffy as Lesbo thing really came out of leftfield. I mean, I always suspected she'd had a thing for hot Japanese women, but still...

Oh and the best issue- stand alone, as it happens- was the Joss Whedon penned The Chain. Just brilliant stuff.

Well folks, the end is in sight.

Announced at the Dark Horse panel (via CBR)

Alli said the Fall's Buffy stories following the Fray storyline Jeph Loeb will join the team for a single issue of the series that picks up on some of the stuff that was unable to be seen in the aborted Buffy animated series, which Leob worked on. Jane Espenson kicks off the next long-form arc which promises to "change the lives of the slayers forever." That will be followed by a five-issue arc by five different writers, after which Espenson returns, followed by Brad Meltzer, and then Whedon's final arc to wrap up the series.

Newsarama's coverage (which includes SPOILERS!) adds info:

- Buffy Season 8 will finish up a crossover with characters from Whedon's former comic series Fray, then Jeph Loeb is coming on for a single issue that will pick up on a "couple of things they weren't able to do with Buffy." After that, Jane Espenson, who was a writer for the Buffy television show, will kick off a five-issue arc featuring stories by the show's TV writers. In the story, Buffy's world goes public. "Vampires become common knowledge and it changes everything for the slayers," Allie said. Following that arc, Espenson comes back for five-issue arc featuring Oz. Then Brad Meltzer will be writing five issues before the series wraps up.

Alright lets sort this out. So after Whedon comes Loeb (Newsarama mentions it is only a one-shot), followed by Espenson kicking off a "long-form arc": 5 issues by 5 writers, then Espenson again for 5 issues, Meltzer for 5 issues, and then Whedon's arc finishes it all up. So, if my math is correct that amounts to: 1 + 5 + 5 + 5 + whatever Whedons arc is (lets assume 6 issues) = 22 more issues of Buffy left.

Joss Whedon Confirms Season 9!

This was pretty obvious, considering how massively successful the Buffy comic has been. It was a top 10 comic for ages and is a perennial top 20 comic.

True. Bothers me I haven't seen any Watchmen nods in Whedon's earlier works - a film apologist, mayhaps? (I'll make my peace with it one of these days..)

I''m still reading Buffy, but to be honest - they're getting kind of dull. Not bad, and it's still Buffy enough to keep my attention, but.. well, I could do with more plot and less weekly monsters. Also, the vamp craze spreading to the comics is needlessly topical.

But seriously, what do you make of them revealing the identity of Twilight publicly before they reveal it in the book? That is pretty strange. They must really want a boost in sales.

That's the snag with using a 'TV' structure in a comic-book. Instead of a twelve issues story, it's forty 'eps' and the frustration at spoilers emerging is even more crushing.

Scott Allie confirms that he spilled the beans about TWILIGHT to boast sales.

Oh, and apparently the Brad Meltzer arc gets all mature, yo. (No word on whether Buffy gets raped by Dr. Light...apparently Scott Allie is keeping that spoiler in his pocket!)

And this comes as a surprise to no one.

EDIT: And, apparently, IDW is pissed, but they can't be pissed so as to not piss off Joss (I know, a lot of piss in that sentence).

They did, however, rush out a hilarious cover to highlight their upcoming SPIKE series and to stick it a little to Dark Horse.
