RUNAWAYS

Now that BKV and Adrian Alphona are officially leaving the series with issue #24 and Joss Whedon and Michael Ryan taking over...I figured it was high time that this series got its very own thread outside of the "I heart BKV" thread.

For an interview with Joss regarding Runaways...click here and here

Personally, I feel that this is a smart move. As Joe Q. said...this will mean a huge sales boost for Runaways...with (hopefully) no drop in quality. I only hope that Joss stays on for longer than 6 issues.

What do you folks think?

I like it. The only thing I'm worried about is the shipping schedule.

Anyone know who new artist Michael Ryan is, btw? I was able to find a few pages of pencils online but couldn't find any big, completed work he's done.

Not bad at all. Seems to strike a good tone for "Runaways."

I am not worried...in the interview with Joss...it says that he handpicked Michael Ryan. If Joss has faith...then so do I.

Here's a page of Michael Ryan's work from New Excalibur -

I think the Runaway's are going to look pretty good in issue 25!

Thanks for the image DLO. As I said...I am not worried. I am actually really excited for issue 25...it going to be a weird event. I am going to be sad, anxious, and excited all in one!

To be honest, even though I like Buffy/Angel/Firefly/Fray Whedon is not my favourite writer by any means, I sometimes find his dialogue a bit samey..... I have not read any of AXM yet and you all rave about that, so I will trust him to do a good job.

I think you will be impressed with Whedon's writing...much like BKV...Whedon is a huge fan of the cliffhanger. Furthermore, he spent 7 seasons on Buffy honing his pop culture laden dialogue. AXM is awesome. Is it the best thing in comics today? (no that would be Runaways). But it still is the best X book on the market (running a close second is Peter David's X-Factor). If there is anyone out there that could be considered a worth successor to BKV...its Joss Whedon.

You're right ( as usual ) Lecko, Buffy will have set him in good stead for Runaways. OK, you've got me, I'm starting to fell a tingle of excitement :D

I just read Newsarama's interview with Whedon on "Runaways," and I had to quote this because I found it too hilarious not to. This is Whedon telling Newsarama what his plans are for all of the Runaways [slightly edited due to spoileroes]:

[quote]Karolina?

“There's something off about that girl. I hardly ever see her with a nice boy.â€

So, so, so incredibly excited about this. And Loners too! Can't wait to see more Excelsior!

Fucking brilliant moves, Marvel.

Before this thread I didn't even know about this title - but I like the sound of it and at only 24 it shouldn't be too hard to catch up.

Which villains do the kids belong to exactly - or are their parents unknowns?

Volume 1 of Runaways actually had 18 issues and is collected in hardcover and digest now. Volume 2 (the current one) has Vaughn ending on 24 and Whedon picking up on 25. I HIGHLY recommend starting at the real beginning and going through.

And the kids' parents are a group called The Pride. They've never been seen or heard of before in the Marvel U, but Vaughn does a nice job of integrating them into the world, making sure everyone knew about them, but were just too afraid to speak of them.

Thanks Whedo - I've been seeing all the love Vaughan has been getting so I'm looking forward to checking out something he's done.

All sounds shiny to me...

"Oh noes!"

"Gross! This guy's foot smells like feet!"

"It's like my heart is having a pizza party."

"why does it feel like my brain is shaking?"

Horned, green ray optic blasting monster (that looks suspiciosly like a giant Ukronn, possibly symbolizing Whedon's impending takeover? crumbs for consideration...) levels Hell-A, and who saves the day?

A devilsh Asian pixie and a caffeinated, 4'11'', 100lbs soaking wet, mutant psionic wrecking ball of punky power.

Missed Alphona during the Chase scenes, but loved loved loved the 2/3rds page of big bad reaching down as Victor proclaims taking public transport is a fate worse than death.

Runaways #21 came out today. Here is the review I posted in the New Comic Wednesday thread.

Runaways #21 - Fairly solid outing. I hold Vaughan to such a high standard that it is almost unfair. This issue (and this arc for that matter) certainly hasn't been bad but it just hasn't been up to par really. I can see why this team decided to leave...they sort of seem like they have run out of steam a bit...a fresh creative team will certainly shake things up and perhaps Vaughan will be able to return sometime down the road after his batteries have recharged. I didn't like the little Civil War references either. I would prefer it if this book stood in its own timeline...let the Runaways/Young Avengers cross-over handle the Civil War stuff.

The next issue marks the beginning of the last arc for this current creative team. Its an important time to be a Runaways fan.

I thought Dead Means Dead was average at best too, some nice dialogue and good art, but nothing earth shattering. I wanted Chase to take a darker turn than Vaughan allowed him. It will be interesting too see how Vaughan and Alphona end their run.

So here's a chicken and egg type question. Spoilers ahoy -

For me, Vaughan lost his voice within Runaways when Gert bowed out ( deep sob ) the lack of her wit and bringing back down to earth factor have left a big hole in the book ( something that I think Whedon will return to this title )

So do you think Vaughan decided to leave before or after he killed Gert? Was it because he had lost his voice or did he sacrifice his voice to make leaving the title a little easier?

Issue 22, last page, HOLY FUCK.

This is going to be a firecracker of a 3 issue finish for Vaughan.

"Don't worry sweetie. Molly's real mutant power is complete mastery of every board game ever created" haha, love it.

Guys, holy shit...

HOLY SHIT!

Just read #23. I cannot believe Vaughn and Alphona are going out this way, yet it excites me SO goddamn much. I love, love, love Chase Stein, and I want to see his plan succeed. Fucking great writing, with all the dramatic levels getting turned waaaaay up.

Beautiful, beautiful stuff.

SPOILERS! BEWARE!

I love Chase. Seriously. He is my favorite character on the Runaways (well besides the hilarious Molly. That Blue's Clues thing had me laughing out loud) and I was beginning to tear up at the thought of his plan. But boy howdy do I hate Gert. I would love it if Chase failed and it just broke him. That would make for some excellent entertainment. Solid issue. BKV and Alphona are heading out with a bang.

OH and FUCK those music download ad inserts. Fuck them in their dirty asses. The first thing I do now is rip those fucking things out of my comics. Fuck you Marvel for doing this.

So I read the first four pages of Runaways 25 today.

It's fucking brilliant. I was worried Whedon was gonna 'Whedon it' too much, but what I read was great.

It was only a one page backstory for the gang and the start of a meal in a New York Restaurant, but I was grinning ear to ear after I finished reading. We all love Molly now? We're gonna love her a lot more soon, stellar dialogue.

I've been checking out New Excalibur in the comic store since I found out Michael Ryan was taking over from Alphona and the art is pretty good, but fuck me, he has totally raised his game for Runaways, the pages look great and the characters are perfect - 25 can't come quick enough now.......

Sigh.

Over at New Joe Fridays...Joe Q. revealed that Whedon is only on for 6 issues. After that, he is gone. They are already in talks with another writer to take over...but he wouldn't say who.

RUNAWAYS is the only Marvel title I am still reading...and that has to do with BVK and Whedon. It is going to have to be a GREAT writer to keep me interested after Whedon goes.
