JUSTIFY: Gambit

Postby burlivesleftnut on Wed Feb 20, 2008 12:59 am

Since Gambit was annouced as a player in the Wolverine film, I decided now would be a good time to launch a new topic. I am going to run JUSTIFY threads occasionally, when I am inspired. But Gambit it the first topic. I can't stand him, but maybe zoners can put him in the proper context, recommend essential stories, or place the character in philosohpical context that will help us appreciate him all the more.

And if you have other ideas about JUSTIFYING a comic character, let me know.

I never dug Gambit in the comics, but I totally dug him in the animated series. But in the pantheon of comic book mutants...he is just boring to me.

Dull. He's a coat and a scarf and a pack of cards. That's about it.

Now that the three people that actually contribute to the comics thread have chimed in...who is the next JUSTIFY character?

I like Gambit in concept. I don't like Gambit in execution.

But, he is a kick ass character in Marvel Vs. Capcom.

I liked his ground to air combos. Could get 9 solid hits with a kinetic card on the end for fun, IF I WAS QUICK ENOUGH.

I tried not to cheese with him, which many people thanked me for. Cordial MvC players. Who knew?

I liked Gambit in the cartoon. And then I grew up and realized how annoying he was. He was all right in some of the issues of Wolverine, but he never really did anything useful, just said "Mon ami, you use them adamantium claws, no?" every other panel. Like a Cajun Captain Obvious.

Yeah, I bet you're the kind of guy that would charge that buster shot up for the longest time, trying to strain your hand until . . .

BLAM! 50 HITS!!!

We tested how many hits you could get on a max: We charged it until about ten seconds before the match was over and nearly got 100. It was the funniest thing to watch.

After reading that, I wish I could take back my "Maybe" vote and change it to "No". God, he does NOTHING, doesn't he? Even the Messiah Complex storyline for his is just a re-hash of everything in the past, but with the baby as a twist.

He's almost as useless as Wolfsbane.

Never liked him.

Hey burl, I'm gonna steal your Justify idea for a post I'd been thinking of (also comic book related).

I always liked him in the cartoon as a kid, but as I never read the comics I can't really comment further.

I think as a kid I liked his suave persona with the females. Who knows?

Hmmm, as much as I hate Gambit, it might be fun to see Adam Sandler playing him.

Damn. Lot of Gambit hate in here. Maybe I have a soft spot, but I like Gambit. The first comic I ever read was Uncanny X-men #266, first appearance of Gambit. There were no hokey cards then, he threw metal spikes. He was lethal and dangerous and mysterious. Cool character.

Later, he may have gotten a little hokey, but I thought he was the ultimate pimp. He was a Cajun Casanova. He was suave and such a ladies man, and it seemed like his heart was in the right place because he was chasing Rogue, so we knew he wasn't tapping that ass. But she was like putty in his hands (figuratively) and since I thought she was the hottest X-hottie, I gave him a lot of props.

I think there's a lot of potential on film for a kick ass character. Lots of cool martial arts with the bo staff. Also, there's the Cajun pride and the idea of the theives guild and such that could really be played up. No honor among theives, make him a petty thief or a master, or kicked out for breaking the rules of the guild. Lots of places to go.

I still like the character, but I think he's best in some sort of love triangle/conflict with Rogue and Bobby.

who was the last Cajun action hero, Van Dam in Woo's Hard Target?

where was Swayze from in Next of Kin?

and, no, brown sugar alley cat from HEROES doesn't count...
Personally, I'm an atheist in the voting booth and a theist in the movie theatre. I separate the morality of religion with the spirituality and solace of it. There is something boring about atheism.

I'm a bit of a Gambit fan too. The only problem was that someone figured that they should drag on the whole Rogue romance thing for WAY too long and if anything it probably dilluted both characters a little because of it.

I kind of like what Marvel is doing with him now where you're really not sure which side he's playing for.

Clearly you haven't seen Submerged. And for that you should be thankful. Steven Seagals cajun accent is truely laughable. I think at random points during the movie, he is actually dubbed by another actor.
