I'll watch his movies if they are on TV and nothing better is on.

Aside the two masterpieces

Creep Show

Creep Show kicks so much ass.

And The Shining which was made good by Stanley and Jack.

No matter what Cell thread this is, I was very shocked today to walk into Target and find copies of Cell for sale considering it has a strict on-sale date for Tuesday (the wife works for a bookstore, so I've been able to pick up how these things work).

EDIT - unlocked (3)? j/k.....

King isn't exactly what I'd call a great writer, but who didn't love THE STAND when they were 13?

Of course, then theres the whole issue of how Kubrick pwned King by making a better film out of a book he wrote. Ouch!

Still, King deserves props for his earlier work. And this one is about zombies. Might be fun.

I think people either love Stephen King's thing or are indifferent. To me, his books seem more or less the same... they aren't bad, but I don't really see the point of reading them. Some unique ideas may emerge here and there, from time to time, but to paraphrase Stanley Kubrick, the guy "doesn't have any style."

Cell isnt bad, I managed to finish it a little bit ago. It's fairly short in terms of King novels and wouldnt have alot of difficulty being transferred into a screen format, nothing off the map like happens in alot of King novels. Cell also has some vague hints of The Stand-ish themes in it.

I dont think Cell will stand out on any favorites list, but it's far from his worst.

I don't read much (actually, i pratically never read books anymore), but at the hight of my readin' skills i was all over King (this was back when i was in my early teens).
he was the "scariest" and "grossest" at the time i guess.
every now and again i reread teh 'short' stories in Four Seasons...

I just finished Cell and I thought it was a pretty good read. Not sure why, but I wasn't quite as invested in the characters in Cell as I was in The Stand, IT or any of the others. They just didn't feel as real to me for some reason.

Also, did anyone else think that Cell felt sort of like a cross between The Stand and The Tommyknockers? Really noticed it in a few places.

this thread made me laugh, "are daddy and other daddy going to get divorced?" awesome!

also jack you're being silly. I think it's safe to say after so many stories have been written and printed it's hard to find ideas that are 100% original. In fact I have a poem that best sums this up;

Everything I do has been done before
Every place I go has been visited before
Every word I speak has been spoken before
Everything I see or can touch have all been here before,
So why am I here? Have I been here before?
Why should I ask? its been asked before

King's new story has a zombie/apocolyptic/mind control aspect but its really not like anything he's done before. Besides wasn't he supposed to have been retired anyway? So I would think fans should just be happy he's still writing

I am happy he's writing and I'm happy that this story is kind of a return to some of his older styles. I enjoyed Cell even though I felt he stinted on his characters a bit. My comment about it being a hybrid of two other stories isn't meant to keep anyone from reading it. I could just see hints of both stories in there.

Nice poem. I think I've read it somewhere before... ;-) j/k

i enjoyed Cell for the most part - unfortuantely - the rest of the book cannot live up to the incredibly insane and intense and down-right thrilling opening chapters...when the pulse first hits - and the craziness begins...but i think that was the point as well - king wanted to grab the reader by the throat and tear into the jugular with his teeth - then he lets you slowly recover while turning it into a survival/character study...

SPOLIERS:
(in small print below)

i like how the ending is a bit ambiguous - he doesn't tell you if everything is gonna be okay - only that there's a possibility the dude's son might recover - i also enjoyed the fact that we never really know why or exactely what happened - just theories that're discussed by the main characters and the supporting characters that they meet... and when the girl kids brained and dies...that actually hit me kinda hard - cause she was by far the best and coolest character - which i guess was the point - it's nice when they kill off the characters you actually really like - as opposed to the ones that are ok - but you wouldn't really care either way...it sucked that she died - but i understand the choice and applaud it...

but all in all - i enjoyed it and finished it in 4 or 5 days or so...which isn't bad considering i don't read much anymore... on a related note - my girlfriend read it first and finished it over 2 evenings...she really liked it...

Cool, Quint gave this a fairly decent review.

I saw the hardback for this on the discount table at B&N for $7. I stood there debating whether to buy it or not.

I think I'll go back and pick it up. What caught my eye, on the inside sleeve of the jacket it reads "Stephen King lives with his wife Tabitha, etc. and does not own a cell phone".
