I've already read Kafka, but I'd be interested in reading another Stephenson novel.

The Todd is down for some Cryptonomicon and it sounds like Maui is as well. Justcheckin is in for Red Mars or Murakami. I've got a few books that I also want to read, so The Todd is going to pick the palatable and add that to the growing list.

If anyone else has any suggestions of votes, feel free to chime in!

I'm really fine with whatever you guys pick so if you all want Cryptonomicon, that is ok. Is there anyone else jumping on the wagon? Like Fievel or Ribbons...

The Todd has been wanting to read either Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood or American Gods by Neil Gaiman.

Thoughts? Votes? Comments?

The Todd also owns a copy he was waiting to read. FYI:

American Gods - After three years in prison, Shadow has done his time. But as the days, then the hours, then the hours, then the seconds until his release tick away, he can feel a storm building. Two days before he gets out, his wife Laura dies in a mysterious car crash, in apparently adulterous circumstances. Dazed, Shadow travels home, only to encounter the bizarre Mr. Wednesday claiming to be a refugee from a distant war, a former god and the king of America. Together they embark on a very strange journey across the States, along the way solving the murders which have occurred every winter in one small American town. But they are being pursued by someone with whom Shadow must make his peace... Disturbing, gripping and profoundly strange, Neil Gaiman's epic new novel sees him on the road to finding the soul of America

So that's 4 people who are cool with some Gaiman. Should we wait and see if other people want in? Should we still have a poll for book choice? I'll try to send out a few PMs to people who have participated before.

I don't think we need a poll if it's just 4 or 5 of us and we are all in agreement.

Unless everyone wants to make it this month, The Todd figures a target date of February 28th to finish the almost 600 page book should be good. Plus, that gives anyone else who wants to jump in a chance to read it and join in the discussion.

I got about a third of the way through the audiobook of American Gods several years ago but then got busy and never returned to it.
I wish I had the time to get into it again (in audio or print form). I look forward to hearing the reactions to it.

For what it's worth, when I stopped listening it was really starting to pick up and get interesting, but by the time I was able to return to it I had forgotten too much of what I had previously heard.
Anansi Boys also waits for me... unheard.

I'll have to get back to you on that one. Halfway through and it's pretty dry but interesting. It's really detailed on the group dynamics of the colonists. Each section is about on particular character and the time scale of events has already been 10+ yrs.

I wish sometimes I could skip mine without risking real nastiness - like psychotic breaks. Oh, mental illness is fun!

Writing ... geez, I remember that. One poem in four years and no real prose.

Well I am fortunate enough to only have situational depression and anxiety. Technically I could be on medication all the time but it knocks my organizational skills back a few levels and its hard to manage my job when I don't give a flying fuck. LOL I am trying to manage it with Yoga and diet, etc. I am sure that will not always work for everything all the time but I'll take it while it does.
