Paul W.S. Anderson to Direct Castlevania -- Ugh...

All the dirt. All the top secret stuff. Anything that has to do with the process of getting us to sit and watch something projected on the big screen.

Paul W.S. Anderson to Direct Castlevania -- Ugh...

Postby MasterWhedon on Thu Nov 03, 2005 3:06 am

This was reported in Variety, via ComingSoon.Net:
ComingSoon.Net wrote:Crystal Sky Pictures has bought the rights to long-running Konami video game franchise Castlevania and has set helmer Paul W.S. Anderson (Alien vs. Predator, Resident Evil) to adapt and direct.

Paul and Crystal Sky president Benedict Carver will produce along with Anderson and Jeremy Bolt, who are partnered in Impact PicturesImpact Pictures.

The film will focus on the origins of Dracula and the uprising of the Belmont Clan, a vampire-slaying family who supposedly become humanity's last hope.

Production is slated to start in mid-2006; no casting has been set. "Castlevania" was first released in 1986. The latest version, "Castlevania: Curse of Darkness," comes out Stateside on November 8.

I was never huge into the Castlevania games, but I know a few folks who were and they say there's some stellar stuff here. Regardless, the fact that the American Dr. Boll is on this sucker means we're looking at one more shit video game adaptation.

WHO THE FUCK KEEPS HIRING THIS GUY?!

Do they not WATCH his movies?! Do they not see that his movies aren't even PROFITABLE?! I'm not the guy to bitch about Hollywood suits, but the fact that this guy has a career makes my stomach turn.

When you suck Satan's cock as well as Mr. "the other" Paul Anderson you don't need talent.

His movies (must) make $$$...there's just no other reason (aside from the one mentioned above).
Personally, I'm an atheist in the voting booth and a theist in the movie theatre. I separate the morality of religion with the spirituality and solace of it. There is something boring about atheism.

Oh god yeah Paul WS Anderson makes money for the suits, he keeps things relatively low budget and always recycles tha same script (a team goes in somewhere, not all of them come back) he mostly uses unknown C grade Actors, mostly, to keep costs down, yeah he makes big profits for the Studios regardless of his hack status with the geeks, Joe Schmoe doesn't care. Oh and Whedon he's actually the British version of Dr Boll, you guys have Stephen Sommers remember?

I hope this means he's off the Death Race 2000 re-make, maybe he realised he couldn't recycle his script for it, in the right hands it would be a kickass movie.

I'm afraid I think he's still doing DeathRace 3000 - he's making Castlevania afterwards.

I know AvP was abysmal, but is he really that bad? I thought Event Horizon wasn't terrible, and Shopping was alright, for what it was

I saw AvP a couple of weekends ago. Personally, I NEVER thought the movie or comic or concept was a good idea. So I wasn't surprised when the movie turned out to be shit, but I imagine it would have been pretty stupid in the hands of any director.

I actually liked two of Anderson's films. The space one with all the blood, and I thought Resident Evil was actually pretty fun.

Also, I guess I should add that I have no emotional investment in Castlevania. I don't even know wtf the game is about. I find it more upsetting that they are adapting another video game than Anderson directing it.

Well said! I know many dyed-in-the-wool, card-carrying geeks who think that Resident Evil is a fantastic film - although anybody who played the game a lot when it first came out seems less impressed with it.

A friend of mind is an obssesive collector of horror movies - and he thought it was really, really good. I wouldn't go that far personally, but I don't think he's a shit director, and he certainly hasn't directed enough things for anybody to be able to completely write him off. I do find his obsessionn with video game movies a little odd though

Burl, AvP was a great comic book/series!

the movie version has zero tie-in with the comic book except for the title.
the movie wasn't the worst thing in the world, but most fans of Alien/Predator mythos will tell you that i could have been something great, that's why we were pissed off...

i haven't played castlevania in decades, so i could care less about what P.W.S.A. does to it.
what bothers me more is that we are going to get ANOTHER FUCKING VAMPIRE MOVIE!!!! Give it a rest already guys!

Burl, did you read the AvP comics? The ORIGINAL series, fuck anything that came later. The first comic was absolutely incredible. They found a way to tie the two franchises together (which wasn't tough, what with Predator 2 opening the door by having a Xenomorph skull in the trophy room) that made sense. Perfect sense, actually.

I could write a paper on why and how AvP failed for me (and most everyone I've ever talked to about it), but I'll leave that alone.

For now, latinoreview.com has script reviews up for both Castlevania and Death Race 3000. Having never seen DR2k, based on the script review it sounds like it will be a pretty decent action film. Statham is supposedly attached, sounds good to me!

Castlevania sounds from the review like another bastardized video game story. For some reason it opens in the 50's with German soldiers, then flashes back to the 1500's (?) and the Simon Belmont portion of the story... complete with half-brother :P Sounds like Resident Evil all over again, let's create main characters!

I get it, it's hard to take a video game that is so (literally and figuratively) two-dimensional and turn it into a film. But fucking TRY, at least!

Not odd at all. It means. 'Hey look, I can attach a name brand to an otherwise pedestrian (generous) script'. He'll continue to make movies because crap or not (crap), his movies make money. What's sickening is that Anderson probably has more of a leash nowadays than Tarantino does.

My problem isn't with Mr. Anderson, it's more with Universal. They need to finish off the "Van Helsing" trilogy instead of trying to find other vamp franchises.

Or, they could just get Richard Roxburgh for "Dracula: Year Zero".

Either way, me and millions of others would be happy campers.

As for the people who don't like it, tough patooties.

True dat. I have a feeling "Super Mario Bros." was that way because they figured no one would want to watch a film that takes place in a cutesy Mushroom Kingdom with Kawaii lil' Mushroom People and silly turtles...unless they were in preschool.

Image

So someone over at Hollywood Pictures thought that turning the Mushroom Kingdom into a gritty, underground NY would be better....NO!!!
