The August/September edition of In Focus Magazine has an epic cover story on 'Firefly'-'Serenity' mastermind Joss Whedon. The interview was conducted June 23, so it makes no mention of the latest 'Spike' TV-moive buzz, but it does feature Whedon talking about (among many, many other things):

I'm not a die hard Whedon fan, but I do respect the man, he is one hell of a storyteller... For all the writers on this forum, the interview is well worth the read. He talks a bit about how obsessed he is with working out the storyline (he uses charts and colour graphs) before he sits down to write the script.

I think his ability to tell an engaging story is what he's great at, plus his use of characters for moving a story forward, and his ability to write characters that the audience care about.

He excells at creating the "thrown together family". You know, a bunch of people in an evironment where they wouldn't normally spend so much time together (school, work, on a space ship) and makes the relationships feel real. You get the sense that they care about each other.

I hate talking postive about Whedon, cuz I'm afraid of coming off as one of the "You don't like Whedon, well fuck YOU" fans, but I feel like the guy deserves his props. And not from crazy ass die hard overzelous fans.

Normal people, like me...

Excuse me, my "Follow you with his eyes Jesus" velvet hanging fell down, I have to clense it with mineral oils then carefully mount it on my faux-brick wallpaperd wall.

The interview covers so many subjects... I guess that since Herc wrote the report, it goes in Coax.

That's my guess.

It only briefly touches on TV at the tail end. Everything else is movie related.

Herc's pretty much the only one at AICN who pays attention to Whedon-related stuff. The others will mention him in passing, but Herc throws it up when first it's mentioned, and he gets yelled at if he posts outside of Coaxial.

No, he mentioned once before on a Whedon-related post (I think about Wonder Woman or X3) that Harry doesn't like it when he posts on movie stuff.

Creating the "thrown together family" is absolutely what I love about Joss. I wouldn't say I was a rabid Whedonite although I do geek off to Angel (the show) and Wes especially. The man has his faults, but he's a great storyteller and is reallly heartfelt.

Just wish I could get the magazine in the UK.

Just read the article, posted this over on the main site:

Regardless of whether or not folks like him, Joss's stories about his work on Toy Story and Speed are really interesting, stuff you don't get to read that often. I only wish they'd gotten to Twister... He's refreshingly candid, but pretty much always a gentleman about not trashing another writer in a "public" setting, even when he has an apparent grudge to bear. I think there are weak spots in many, many episodes throughout the run of Buffy, Angel and Firefly, but the broad, overarching themes and the small, personal moments more than make up for them. I very much dig the guy's style and story sense.

And burl, I get that he was kidding, but I'm betting that jokingly-pissed-off Headgeek is still a scary sight.

This is really fucking annoying. After the recent thread on Firefly/Serenity a while back, I decided to watch the entire run of Firefly front to back, and then decide if I want to see Serenity (the trailers didn't do much for me). But for some reason, it's easier to download Space Patrol radio shows from the 50s than to get an episode of Firefly. Maybe I should see if the video store has it for rent...

STFU. Seriously? Awesome. I didn't even know it was airing on Sci-Fi. Lemme go check out the schedule.

EDIT: Shit, looks like I'll have to wait a while. I'll try and get the first couple in the mean time.

One of the things that finally made my interest pass the tipping point was reading this interview and finding out there's no FTL travel in Firefly. Don't know why. It probably has something to do with me being an Earth 2 whore when that first came on.

Yeah I mean I will give it a chance, because it is Whedon. It is just such a crime that they won't let him do an X-Men movie, read Astonishing X-men. He clearly knows the characters.

Postby Great Script, But What If on Tue Feb 14, 2006 3:34 pm

This is coming from a Buffy, Angel(not so much Serenity but haven't really watched enough episodes to form an opinion) fan but I really wish Whedon would walk away from Wonder Woman. I just can't see the film, no matter how well it turns out, actually being a success. She may be one of the top three classic DC characters but that would have to be one of the most astounding, jaw droppingly, awesome movie trailers ever conceived and unleashed upon the world just to get me slightly interested in adding it to my Netflix queue.

It's Joss Whedon tackling the character from which all Joss Whedon characters come. Color me interested.

IESB wrote:IESB: There are going to villains, there's going to be all that good stuff? And it's going to stay loyal to the comic books?

JW: Well the villains are of my own creation. I don't think Wonder Woman has the greatest rogues gallery in the world so I created someone of my own for her to come up against. It has to do with Greek mythology and the roots that the original comic was built on.

I'm liking that it'll be an original villain, and something mythology-based. Let's just jope it's not the overdone Athena, Hera or Medusa.

Oh, and I'm making this the Wonder Woman thread.

Yeah he would have to make up a new villain because Wonder Woman's rogue gallery is LAME...I mean honestly. I am still not sold on this movie at all. If they cast someone insanely hot and if she is wearing practically no clothes, I might change my tune.

I dunno, I think Dr. Psycho is sufficiently creepy. Not Dennis or Voldemoo level creepy, but he's a total misogynist. The perfect villain to get his ass kicked by an Amazon.

I have no interest in Wonder Woman.

But I have mucho interest in Joss Whedon.

Therefore, I will see this movie.

I wish he'd make a Fray movie instead, though.

Joss will probably be one of the only reasons I'll go see Wonder Woman lol But the guy seems big on making movies/tvshows with all powerful but still 3 dimensional women so I guess it's a fit!

I'm also not that big on Joss the director but I think he's an awsome writer.

Instead of Wonder Woman Joss would have been better suited for Supergirl. Adam Balm I get your point about Dr. Psycho. However, I wouldn't imagine them using that name. It would just ring too trite. However, since its a new villain that will not be a problem.

Casting hopefuls

1.Charisma Carpenter-good choice.history with Whedon and one of the hottest hotties out there.

2.Do you fear the Apocalypse? you should because our next contestant could destroy Whedons career and/or all life on earth. She is none other than Herbie driving Lindsay Lohan. I saw this on IMDBs news so check it out. Now I know some of you are thinking
no effing way she gets it. But just think about Hollywood for a second and its a distinct possibility.

Start praying now.

IMDB is about as reliable for movie news as the UK press.

They accept submissions and then post them for the world to see until the someone tells them different. Lindsey Lohan will never be Wonder Woman. Not in a Joss Whedon-scripted film, at any rate.
