I'd love to see that guy play Sub-Mariner, of course fans would kick and scream like the end of the world, so maybe not worth the trouble.

Sorry, should have been more clear, was responding to the Daniel Dae Kim suggestion, not Hugo, just didn't want to call him Jin cause I know that's his Lost character's name, not the actor, and I'm too lazy to look it up, which I have done now anyways, and have been forced to write another post, my laziness has betrayed me! And since we got a mod on hand, this isn't really a coaxial topic is it?

Whoever gets cast had better have one heck of a great physique, given that he's gotta be nearly naked through the whole film. It won't be like the Hulk, where you can have him entirely CG, because he has to be in the whole film, not just an action sequence here and there.

ok so sub mariner is like aquaman, in that he can breathe under water and swims with the fishes and all but he has wings on his ankles? and this allows him to fly around outside of the water? wtf?

no wonder this comic never went anywhere, this is meca-lame. And casting the Rock as the lead is just the one-raised eyebrow icing on the stupidity cake.

And who would possibly be dumb enough to invest money in this thing especially with the recent failure of Aquaman (which was only a tv show, not even a movie)? Seriously how does this shit happen?

It happens because Hollywood doesn't believe in trying anymore. They're a sausage factory - cranking out turd shaped products with out regards to the possible unsavory ( the Hollywood equivilent of pigs knuckles, snout et al ) ingrediants.
They simply don't give a shit.

Its up to a handful of directors crank out quality, whilst the rest.....?

I guess U-571 was probably what got Mostow this job; he's a decent director, so I'm not too put out by that.

I do wonder how a movie like this is gonna turn out, though. Filming underwater is apparently one of the hardest things to do, for both actor and director. I'd imagine that this movie involves quite a bit of it.

well I think its a little more than that, I imagine there is some sort of a process involved in getting something from concept to filming, I just don't understand wtf is so flawed in that process that allows projects like this and a revenge of the nerds remake to happen. I can picture someone presenting the idea to the people with money, I just can't see how those people can possibly see these things as a wise investment.

Ok given that hollywood has had a ton of recent success with comic to movie adaptations but submariner? come on!?! and again the proof that what I'm saying is true lies in the grave of that aquaman TV show, which btw I have a sneaking suspicion will somehow end up in movie form on a DVD or something at some point.

Anyway I'm not saying this will be horrible but I really don't see it being anything exceptional and certainly not a huge money maker, though even Catwoman did make some money didn't it?

But the story so far, that he discovers he's from Atlantis (sound firmiliar) and that there is about to be a war between atlantis and the "land dweller" just seems so damn idiotic it makes me really question .. why?

i believe the story said that was an idea that was part of the original script storyline, but that was before Mostow was hired to WRITE and direct, so no one here knows what he will do in regard to the character set up.

I definitely don't know my Sub-Mariner history. I had always assumed that he'd been raised as an Atlantean prince. Personally, I think it sounds more interesting that way. Sort of like Princess Mononoke told from Princess Mononoke's perspective. Only Princess Mononoke is now a spoiled douche. ...what was I saying? Oh yeah, I think it'd be more interesting if Namor knew he was an Atlantean prince the whole time, and came to the "Land Word" in preparation for the war, and not the other way around.

you really can't have a first sub mariner tale without the fantastic four or the avengers though.

he was born underwater, and being that he's half human he can walk among the land dwellers. he can talk to the fishies of course, but also has superhuman strength and limited flight but needs to stay cool and hydrated.

he comes to the surface because of pollution or war, whatever, but it's the idea he comes to either give his demands to the UN and is rejected and another superhero (team) comes to keep shit form going bad and that not all humans are shitbags.

so by itself, I don't see this working.

What'll happen is, he'll fall in love with a landlubber who'll teach him to make love and not war. And then he'll mediate peace between the two "nations." But maybe there'll be a power hungry vizier in there or something who'll try and kill him. And then at the end they have an epic one-on-one slugfest. And then he'll kiss his gal at the end on top of a sperm whale.

There you go, Hollywood, I just wrote your movie for you. Go to work!

I'm way unimpressed with this development. I've never been remotely interested in Namor or Aquaman (though I do like how pissed they seem all the time), and having a mediocre director attached makes me all the more "meh."

The latest news:

Jonathan Mostow to Helm Sub-Mariner!
Source: Variety
September 14, 2006

Universal Pictures has signed Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines director Jonathan Mostow to rewrite and direct Marvel Studios' Sub-Mariner.

Variety says Mostow has cleared his schedule to make Sub-Mariner his next film. The comic, created by cartoonist Bill Everett in April 1939, centers on a young man who discovers he's actually a descendant from the long-lost kingdom of Atlantis. He turns out to be the key man in a brewing war between the underwater world and our own.

Kevin Misher is producing through his Misher Films along with Marvel Studios. Universal's Peter Cramer is overseeing for the studio, Kevin Feige for Marvel. David Self wrote an earlier draft of the screenplay.

Mostow's past credits also include U-571 and Breakdown.
