"River Queen" footage seen

Hey, you know that NZ film River Queen? There were recently photos up at Aint It Cool News.

Anyway, what appeared to be a trailer recently played on NZ television. I think it was a trailer anyway...it was hard to tell with the newsreader talking over the entire bloody thing. But I can say - the film is GORGEOUS. Possibly the most beautiful filmed footage of New Zealand locations. It's not the big mountain ranges on the lord of the rings films, this film takes place amongst the New Zealand bush and on it's rivers. I've been to these places, and I've never seen them looking as stunning.

The shots of maori waka boats going down the river are particularly gorgeous, with the greens and browns of the river and bush really vivid. The costumes look great, and the film has a real gritty feel. There are some cool scenes of battles in the bush glimpsed, with Kiefer sporting a great beard. Overall, the film LOOKS stunning, and hopefully the trailer shows up online soon.

For those uninformed, River Queen is directed by Vincent Ward, and is based during the NZ land wars which took place when the British showed up to colonise NZ and went to war with the Maori tribes. It was a bit of a mixed up war too, with some maori tribes fighting alongside British troops against rival tribes. The maori also used some good tactics in the rugged NZ bush, getting some nice defeats against the British.

The film stars Kierfer Sutherland and Samantha Morton and is about an Irish woman searching for her half maori son amongst the tribes during this war. Kiefer plays a soldier of some sort.

Anyway, I figured that'd be news. It plays at the Toronto film festival, and opens in New Zealand later in the year, hopefully followed by a nice internaional release.

Sounds fascinating dimnix, and your description of the trailer definitely has me intrigued.

Sounds good dimnix, If Kiefer is in it though, it will probably go straight to Video in the UK, unless it is really good, in which case it will never get a distributor.

Hey, cheer up mate, it's not that bad, surely! America has its fair share of distribution problems too.....

The Grey Zone, Mean Creek, Blueberry & Undertow, are all meant to be good or very good but they have no distribution in the UK. Things are that bad.

That's only 4 movies dude! And not a single one of them had a particularly wide release in the States - all were limited releases.

Talk to Harry about this subject and he'll reel off a list of about 50 movies which are still in distribution hell in the US, many of which have been on the cinema over here, and some of which have even made it onto our TV screens.

The grass, as they say, is always greener.....

Yeah seriously. We don't get shit in most places. I can't tell you the number of times a movie being released in only LA and NY has made me murdered a nun.

Yeah but most of them are at least released on DVD, in the UK we get too many "Muffy The Vampire Slayer" or "Sexy Secretary" etc cheap porno ripoffs when there is quality entertainment going a miss. Blockbusters cater for idiots too much.

What's wrong with "Sexy Secretary"?

Who rent's softcore porn from Blockbusters when you can get the good hardcore shit for free on the net? Why do they bother using the shelf space for such crap, "The Bare Witch Project" ha ha, original title wankers. Can anybody think of any others? there are loads of the fuckers with names almost exactly like resonably successsful Hollywood movies.

Ha! I've SEEN the Bare Witch Project on cable. It was lame. A few wank scenes, but not many. Are we talking softcore titles or hardcore titles? Can I've always gotten a kick out of Edward Penis-hands.

Sorry, Locke. I didn't know if you just wanted softcore titles, cause I couldn't remember too many off the top of my head. So I just threw out the one hardcore title that cracks me up.

Remember the movie Regarding Henry with Harrison Ford? He gets amnesia and can't remember who he is blah blah blah. I saw a porn version called Regarding Hiney where the main character gets amnesia and craves only anal sex afterwards. funny shit. And Edward Penishands was disgusting!

Do Blockbusters stock Hardcore in the USA then?? Hardcore titles are all good and fun but they don't tend to take up shelf space that could be used for some great Indie Films like the Softcore titles do in my Blockbusters, which is kind of my whole point.

I don't know of any mainstream video store that even stocks softcore stuff anymore. Its all new releases and a few select classics.

blockbusters over here do not carry hardcore porn.
i don't even think they carry softcore either.

I thought you could buy hardcore granny tranny porn in mcdonalds in the US???

Next you'll be telling me they dont sell guns any more

Did any of you see the footage of that fucking nutter trying to shoot down the rescue helicopter in New Orleans that was trying to rescue him?

Jesus, no. That is both ALF and (for me) not surprising in the least. New Orleans is like the crazy homeless nutter of American cities.

Just like with the Tsunami Nature has a way of clensing the Worlds most deprived areas, look on the bright side, all of those living in absolute poverty will get the chance to live in modern accomodation once the re-building starts.

True, true. But that's what multi-region DVD players are for, n'est-pas?
I tend to worry more about the awful state of our own film industry, what with the lottery funds fiasco, and Gordon Brown ending film-makers' tax breaks...

Anyway, I'm past caring now. The phrase "sexy secretary" for some reason left me in a fit of giggles, and I'm now unable to participate.

But surely, the other one should be Muffy the Vampire Layer??

There is a Muffy the Vampire Layer, but that's hardcore and John's not looking for that...

Why is John looking for porn here anyway? Seems like there are easier places to find it that the River Queen thread at the Phantom Zone.

I don't really get why he is going for the softcore anyway. It's so half assed.

I think he was babbling on and on about how he hates renting porn or something like that. I think the guy behind the counter gives him weird looks when he rents "Bantha Showers IV: The Golden Box Spring"

Burl I am not looking for porn (I have plenty) I am talking about those awful titles that Blockbusters Stock Instead of some great indie productions, in the UK anyway.

TITG, you can only import so much before it gets out of hand with the cash flow, I probably only want to watch these films once, if they are really good I’ll buy them but I'd like the option. Films like The Saddest Music in the World which I missed on it's limited release in London and still hasn't come out on DVD, I like the sound of it but I doubt it's the sort of thing I'd watch repeatedly. Even if they were only available as retail you could eventually buy them in a special offer for about a fiver, but they just continue to over look these type of films and concentrate on releasing more straight to Video tripe pap bollocks shit and it really annoys me.
