You guys do realize that those quotes were most likely transcribed, and that the stupid fuck from MTV who wrote it probably doesn't have clue one when it comes to He-Man... right? I highly doubt that a guy who is so devoted to making this BADFUCKINGASS doesn't realize the dude's name is Triclops. And the nipples on Trap-Jaw comment was a poorly written response to the idea that this is the Batman Begins of He-Man. I wouldn't take that comment in the literal sense, more like "We're going for realism, not OTT cartoonisms." Here, let me make it easier to comprehend:

Nipples on Bat-suit / uber codpiece = going out of your way to be ridiculous.
Scarecrow wearing a burlap mask that freaks people the fuck out after they've been subjected to a fear toxin = going out of your way to make the ridiculous accessable and realistic.

I've probably said it before in this thread already, but I can't stand "it is because it is" style storytelling. Marks is doing right by me on this one. It's all well and good that Castle Greyskull is full of secrets that can only be unlocked by combining the swords of power, and that Skeletor is after said secrets but... WHAT ARE THEY ABOUT? It's like, it could be anything, but no one knows! He-Man is defending them WHY? He doesn't know! He is just good, Skeletor is just evil, and stopping evil is the right thing to do! Imagine if the following scenario played out:

Skeletor: He-Man fell for my trick! He totally looked behind himself when I just stopped and pointed! That was so easy, I can't believe he didn't hear Beast-Man coming up to hit him on the head! Now, with his sword of power, I shall UNLOCK THE SECRETS OF CASTLE GREYSKULL!

(a few hours later, Skeletor walks out, looking defeated.)

Beast-Man: What did you learn, master? What secrets were unveiled to you?

Skeletor: IT WAS SOME FUCKING DOUCHEBAG PRINCESS'S DIARY! "Oh, Princess Tala is just SO dreamy, I hope no one ever finds out my little secret! That secret, of course, being that I am a lesbian unhappily betrothed to that man-pig, Prince Alec!" This twat has been dead and buried for millennia, no one even remembers who originally built this castle, and that asshole He-Man was stopping me all this time from reading her DIARY! Fuck this place, I'm going to Middle Earth where I can really tear shit up.

See what I mean? There's no point to anything in the cartoon other than thinly veiled moral lessons for kids and to sell the next cool toy. At least Marks is trying to make it a viable franchise again.

He-Man Panda?
According to my sources, one of my favorite projects got itself a director. Supposedly, Kung Fu Panda director John Stevenson went in to the Silver offices, came in and did this killer take on He-man and the Masters of the Universe and got himself the job!

Shit yeah! Watch the prison break scene from Kung Fu Panda and you will get a sense of what this movie could be: Energetic, inspired, dark, but yet fun! I just hope that he is as live action director as good as animation director AND that they won't use the "Greyskull" script.

From Variety: WB, Joel Silver shaping He-Man film - John Stevenson to direct live action 'Masters'

MICHAEL FLEMING wrote:
He-Man is a brawny prince who transforms into a warrior who becomes the last hope for a magical land called Eternia, which is being ravaged by technology and the evil Skeletor.

Stevenson said the first film came to mind when he was asked to consider the job, and the impression wasn't a good one. He changed his mind when he went to Mattel headquarters and was shown into a secret lair that contained the visuals created by the toymaker staff.

"There was this locked bunker that you had to be escorted into," Stevenson said. "It was filled with art, some generated by the Mattel artists, and I looked around, and said, 'I get it.' We started formulating a specific vision for costumes, creatures, architecture, and the creation of a mythology and look for a whole world we'll create."

Waldo said that Stevenson's vision to elevate the material matched with Mattel's desire to see He-Man become a big studio film. Mattel has also brought its "Hot Wheels" film to WB and Silver.

From THR.com:
Stevenson joins 'Masters of the Universe' - Joel Silver, Warner Bros. bringing toy line to big screen
Borys Kit and Georg Szalai wrote:
Justin Marks penned the script, which skews more toward gritty fantasy and reimagines Adam as a soldier who sets off to find his destiny, happening upon magical world called Eternia. There, a being called Skeletor has raised a technological army and is bent on eradicating all traces of magic.

"I think it's fair to say, and knowing the epic nature of this script, you will see things you have never seen before. John has that creativity."

From THR.com:
Warner Bros. and Silver Pictures have tapped newcomer Evan Daugherty to pen the latest draft of "Grayskull," the studio's big-screen take on Mattel's "Masters of the Universe" cartoon and toy line.

John Stevenson ("Kung Fu Panda") is attached to direct the adaptation of the show, which followed a blond warrior named Prince Adam who, when uttering the magic words, "By the power of Grayskull -- I have the power," turned into the heroic He-Man. He and his allies -- Battle Cat, Man-at-Arms and Orko -- defended their planet Eternia from the evil forces of Skeletor, who tried week after week to conquer the fortress Castle Grayskull, which imbued He-Man with his powers.

Warners sees the big-screen version as a gritty fantasy and reimagines Adam as a soldier who sets off to find his destiny, happening upon the magical world of Eternia. There, Skeletor has raised a technological army and is bent on eradicating magic.

Justin Marks penned the previous draft.

Landing "Grayskull" is a huge coup for Daugherty, whose only writing credit is the unproduced screenplay "Shrapnel." Daugherty wrote the script -- a character-driven psychological thriller about two mortal enemies on a hunting trip to the death -- to earn an NYU film-school grant. He was living at his parents' home at the time and paying bills by doing freelance video editing.

Daugherty didn't get the grant but entered an obscure screenwriting contest called Script Pimp, where he caught the attention of Jake Wagner of management firm Energy Entertainment. The script made the Hollywood rounds and landed on the Black List, while Daugherty moved to Los Angeles to pursue his writing career.

Daugherty additionally is repped by UTA.

From Variety:
No He-Man for WB, Mattel
Mike Fleming wrote:
Warner Bros. and Mattel will be parting company on “Masters of the Universe,” the live-action reinvention of the signature Mattel toy line that WB and producer Joel Silver have been developing since 2007.

Mattel and WB didn’t see eye to eye over the direction of the project and made a mutual decision to let the option lapse this month. The film revolves around He-Man, a prince who becomes a warrior who battles the evil Skeletor for control of his magical homeland.

Mattel will take back the property and set it up elsewhere. The expectation is that director John Stevenson (“Kung Fu Panda”) will stay, but not Silver, who is exclusive to WB.

As Disney’s Marvel Entertainment acquisition and WB’s overhaul of DC Comics and its movie output shows, branded properties are important commodities. The owners of those brands have more direct involvement and higher expectations.

The situation is reminiscent of Paradox Entertainment’s decision several years ago to decline an option renewal on the Robert E. Howard “Conan the Barbarian” franchise, after WB made numerous attempts to re-invent the franchise with major filmmakers. Paradox aligned with Avi Lerner’s Millennium Films, with Marcus Nispel directing. That deal has strict progress to production stipulation

Mattel, which still has “Hot Wheels” with WB and Silver Pictures, has become pro-active in setting properties for films since aligning with CAA. Among them is a Universal/Playtone deal to turn “Major Matt Mason” into a star vehicle for Tom Hanks, a deal with Paramount for “Max Steel” and a Universal deal for a live-action musical to be based on a new toy-line that aspires to add a fresh twist to monster lore, with “Hairspray” producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron and Tony-winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.

Do you think we'll ever see another Speed Racer?

Silver:
No

What happened with He-Man? Last time I talked to you a script was being worked on.

Silver:
We let that one go. We couldn't really figure out how to do it. Sony has it, it's not with us anymore.

Just too difficult?

Silver:
Eh, it was a weird one. I'm sure somebody could figure it out. But you know, the studio didn't know really what they wanted from it and we kept trying to figure it out. But it wasn't going anywhere. For us.

Good guys versus bad guys, it's not that hard.

From Heat Vision:
'Masters of the Universe' screenwriters hired
Borys Kit wrote:Mike Finch and Alex Litvak, the duo who wrote the upcoming "Predators" reboot, have been brought aboard to pen "Masters of the Universe" for Columbia.

The studio picked up movie rights to the 1980s Mattel toy property in the fall, when Mattel and Warner Bros. parted ways after the sides couldn't agree on a creative vision.

The addition of the rising writers is the first major move on the property and signals the project is being rebuilt from the ground up. While at Warners, "Masters" went through several writers and in latter stages had John Stevenson, who co-helmed "Kung Fu Panda," attached to direct.

Getting the go-ahead to tackle any major toy-brand film can be tricky. Depending on the property, writers and directors need to get a thumbs-up from the studio, which then has to win approval from the toy company. In the case of "Masters," Mattel has story approval.

In their pitch, the scribes attempted to balance a treatment that would convince the studio it was cinematic and keep the toy company satisfied that its characters were being portrayed appropriately.

The '80s show, "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe," centered on blond warrior Prince Adam, who, after uttering the magic words "By the power of Grayskull, I have the power," turned into the heroic He-Man. He and his allies -- Battle Cat, Man-at-Arms and Orko -- defended their planet Eternia from the evil forces of Skeletor, who week after week attempted to conquer the fortress Castle Grayskull, which imbues He-Man with his powers.

Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch of Escape Artists are producing.

The Verve-repped Finch and Litvak made a splash last year with "Medieval," which jolted the spec market when it sold to New Regency for big bucks. That script scored the duo the coveted gig of writing the Robert Rodriguez-produced "Predators," helping the long-in-development sequel go from script to screen in just more than a year.

I say it needs to take itself only enough to not laugh at how they look, but not so serious that it kills the spirit.

Like say the first Conan movie, wasn't mega serious, but they made you belive that the world was a giant RPG session and nobody batted an eye when a warlock turned into a snake or chanting monks abducted hot virgins for firey saccrifice.

Granted MOTU will be PG-13 at worst/best. But there's a lot they can do within that range. And look at that Skeletor, he's fucking METAL!

I really hope they take the orgins from the cardbacks and pack in comics versus the cartoon though. Like Trap Jaw is supposed to be a pirate and little things like that that seemed to be ignored on TV.

Back in the day the original He-Man figures came with little comic books. These mini-comics, as far as I remember, were rather serious in tone.
I'd like to see that sort of take on the property. KP's picture above looks like a modern variation of the old mini-comics' characters.
