Random Movie News

Postby wonkabar on Fri Dec 22, 2006 1:23 am

So, you run across an interesting bit of movie-news that you want to share. But it's a flick that hasn't been talked about recently and you don't want to flip through 16 pages of movie-news, and our "seach"-function eats ass. You don't want to start a duplicate thread but you don't want to go to a huge amount of trouble cuz it's just a tib-bit of info you found about a film you might not be that super-duper psyched on anyway. But you still think it's worthy. Or maybe it's related to the movie in question but what you want to share doesn't really belong on the existing thread. Or maybe it's a movie that we don't have a thread for yet, but it doesn't really deserve one....

This is your place

Yeah great idea Wonka, this would make things a lot easier if you did want to post something about a film that you weren't sure would be worthy of a lot of coverage so you may have decided to contact a MOD who told you to go right ahead and do it anyway. Then you do it and then the cheeky little heathen locks the thread you made after their advice to the contrary and then made your own thread which gets all the glory. That would be enough to get someone in that positions hairy back itchy!!!!

Ben Stiller and Tom Cruise to team up in THE HARDY MEN?!!

NNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWTF?!!

:?

I loved The Hardy Boys as a kid, but this is about as far from appealing as I could think of for an updated screen version. And seriously, Tom Cruise and Ben Stiller? One of them is clearly playing against type, and I'm not sure I like the possiblities of either.

What's up with Shawn Levy getting all this work all of a sudden?

When I read this my first thought went to the 'MI3 Tom Cruise' impression I saw Ben Stiller do at some awards show, maybe MTV Movies, the year it came out. Stiller is a fantastically funny comedian (Ben Stiller Show, Zoolander) who oftens works really broad material to great success, but lower quality (Meet the Fockers, Strarsky and Hutch). I really think they would be going for parody here with Stiller lampooning the Cruise persona. It may well suck, but it would be a huge hit, I suspect.

Schumacher wants to do Sandman....OMFG!

That brings me to what Schumacher told <the writer> today. He would like to do a Sandman movie…but can he get it right?

Schumacher has delivered many good films including The Lost Boys, A Time to Kill, Falling Down, St. Elmo’s Fire, 8MM and Phone Booth.

But, of course, we can’t forget about the two Batman films that he directed. While I enjoyed Batman Forever for the most part, you have to admit that Val Kilmer as the Bat was pretty cool and Jim Carrey as the Riddler was genius, it is difficult to forgive him for Batman and Robin.

But who was at fault? The blame will always land on the director even though the studio had to sign off on all the kooky details. The damage that film caused to the Batman franchise was insurmountable and it took 10 years and a total reboot to make the movie going audience have faith in Gothams favorite hero once again.

Would the studio allow him to direct Sandman? Joel himself wasn’t to sure if they would but like I mentioned earlier, he does have a pretty decent track record and I believe that a lot will have to do with how The Number 23 and his next horror film, Town Creek, perform at the box office.

Read the complete interview:

What does Neil Gaiman think of this rumor?
"... Mr. Schumacher is in a very long line of people who want to do this movie..."

Would Schumacher be your choice?

Hate to say it, but agreed.

I will forgive anyone for almost anything in hollywood (at least insofar as work product is concerned) but I will never, ever forgive him for Batman and Robin.

Never.

But then it'll never get made...

He can add it to his list of dream projects that he'd love to make one day...

On a related note - I hear Sam Raimi is interested in directing Del Toro's list...

I just saw this on Dark Horizons today and it was the worst bit of movie news I heard all day. What the fuck are they thinking? I can already tell the thing will be mildly humorous at best and will ruin any chances of a real Hardy Boys movie being made any time soon. I hope this dies before they even spend one cent on pre-production.

I am nowhere near as worried about Schumacher directing Sandman. I'll say it. As long as his nephew doesn't ask him to make it fun we should be ok. Then there is the fact that this is in no way going to happen soon. Don't worry just yet.

So I guess that means his knights of money, Shawn Levy and Brett Ratner, will ride in to finish the sequel when Cohen backs out!

Shawn Levy is busy making every movie under the sun...and Brett Ratner is completing Brett Ratner's Rush Hour 3.

So they'd probably end up getting David Dobkin to do it.

Natalie Portman: Movie Director?

Reuters.com wrote:Natalie Portman (Star Wars prequels) has expressed interest in directing a film version of Israeli writer Amos Oz's internationally acclaimed autobiography, reports Reuters.

Portman, 25, may also act in A Tale of Love and Darkness if it is brought to the big screen, Jerusalem Capital Studios spokesman Danny Levy said.

"JCS has met with Portman to discuss the possibility of her participating in and directing a film version of the book," he said.

A Tale of Love and Darkness describes Oz's upbringing in Jerusalem amid the fighting during which the Jewish state was founded. Israeli media said Portman was interested in playing Oz's mother, who committed suicide when the author was a youth.

Portman was born in Jerusalem and speaks Hebrew.

Here's one for the Ukers:

The BFI is to open up its archive (supposedly the world's largest) to the public. Here's the original article, reprinted below:

Film buffs will soon be able to watch Audrey Hepburn's first screen test after the British Film Institute agreed to allow the public to view the contents of its vaults.

Oscar-winning British director Anthony Minghella has announced that reams of previously unseen and rarely-viewed footage will be made available for free.

The film and TV archive also includes a young Sean Connery starring in a TV ad campaign for the Royal National Institute for the Blind and Germaine Greer singing in costume.

Anthony Minghella, who is also chairman of the BFI, told Sky News: "The BFI has been trying to do this for many, many years. We've been trying to make this treasure that we have, this great secret, available to the public."

The British Film Institute has the world's largest film archive.

It includes the episode of Coronation Street where Elsie Tanner pulled her first pint at the Rover's Return. Mr Minghella hopes that the announcement will allow visitors to experience more of their film culture and heritage. "Our present becomes our history very quickly," he said. "Moving image is this pungent and powerful reminder of who we are, what it means to be British."

Forrest Gump Sequel still gonna happen?

Apparently this si based on an actual sequel novel by the same Gump author. This one SPOILERS...

Sees the Gump business failed and Gump going through major historical events through the 80s and 90s. He even meets Tom Hanks!!

Hmm, I dunno. The original movie, no matter how much I didn't like a lot of it, at least gave you a great happy ending, though pathed in er, pathos. That ending for me gave me hope and reassurance. I mean through all the bad grief that he went through, Gump came out on top. That business that he had, it was one of the sole foundations for this happy ending. I sy ending, as I feel that it should have set him for life. He was a gold zillionaire right?

Don't undo this happy ending for the sake of a sequel. Don't even bother with the sequel, the ending was perfect, and as far as we were concerned, again, Gump is on course for a pretty happy life after it. Yes it's relative, there will be problems, but man, nothing tragic as the business going tits up and him having to start over like this. It's a bit of a Rocky 5 approach. Unnecessary and implausible as well as crushing and treading all over our hopes.

Anyway, I might be jumping to conclusions about how bad this might all be. I'm only writing from first impressions so I am open to being corrected.

What does anyone else think?
