Robotech (Now 100% More Organic Tobey-Slingers)

All the dirt. All the top secret stuff. Anything that has to do with the process of getting us to sit and watch something projected on the big screen.

Robotech (Now 100% More Organic Tobey-Slingers)

Postby havocSchultz on Fri Sep 07, 2007 11:02 am

Main Page has the news of a Robotech Movie being developed...

A ROBOTECH movie is coming... with everyone's friendly neighborhood wall-crawler at the controls!!!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Yep, a ROBOTECH flick is finally moving and it looks like you're going to be seeing Tobey Maguire manning a giant robot on the big screen.

Warner Bros is doing the flick and Maguire is producing via his Maguire Entertainment banner. Craig Zahler is writing the script.

Nothing's set in stone yet, but Maguire seems to want to play the lead. I can't pretend to know much about ROBOTECH... I never got into it, but my good friend Kraken is a huge ROBOTECH nerd and says that Maguire is totally wrong for the lead... He totally Yoda'd it. "He's too old!"

What do you folks think?

MY God...It's been a while since I've heard of Robotech. I used to be into those beasts quite alot.

I can imagine all the execs since the emergence of Transformers are now screaming,

"BRING ME MORE FRICKIN GIANT MACHINE FILMSSS!!!!!"

Maybe they'll have him playing Roy Focker instead of Rick Hunter.

Which means we'll have Shia LeBouf as Rick Hunter of course, or maybe that Emile Hirsch kid, then he can be typecast as that guy in the live action animes.

Is it just me, or are all the suggestions being tossed around so far HORRIBLE?

Tobey? No.
Shia? No.
Casey Affleck? No.

Give me someone who actually looks kind of manly :-P Leave the pretty-boys/boyish types for the Gundam Wing movie.

That all being said, Robotech as a movie isn't a bad idea. Actually, it makes me want to play the Robotech game for the Cube again :) That was fun.

But yah, I'd still much rather have my live action Akira, or Gundam. At least they're finally moving forward on a live action DBZ movie  I see that one turning out about as good as Toys.

Oh boy, here come the robot movies.

Alright, well most of those animes involve some kid-type anyway. Why not use the source material but scrap the fact that it needs to be a 7 year old kid anyway...use someone older.

Unless we are talking about my precious Gundam Wing that Fawst adores so much....cast that sucker right!!!!

Oh, DBZ already sounds 100% ALF as a life-action movie.

DBZ would RULE if someone did it "right." For instance, you obviously can't have EVERY fight scene be in hyper-kinetic mode. Meaning, those guys move insanely fast, too fast for a human to really see. So what do you do? You shoot a scene or two in a way so that you have pedstrians on the street all reacting in slow motion to the fight that is happening in real time. That would be slick. And then when you have the crazy "Let's fight while floating above the desert" scenes, you don't need to worry about it so much.

And of course, you HAVE to have the "security cam" shot, where a fight in public is replayed at real time speed, and it's all like "WTF WAS THAT SHIT?!"

Trust me, I know how to DBZ live action RIGHT.

Robotech is simple, you already have the proof of concept done by Transformers. Just make some planes that can walk.

Mmmmmm... Gundam...

Well DBZ wasn't exactly translatable into a movie.

I hope they include the 6 episode Spirit Bomb or whatever and I hope it takes the entire movie to form. And I hope Vigina makes an appearance. And I hope they reach level 10 super sayin (heh heh, that's not how it's spelt...).

Well, as for Tobey, I really don't care. Hell, I still think Jake Gyllenhal should be Shinji Ikari.

I just hope they don't cast Minmei with an irritating voice...like Tracey with the deviated septum from "Hannah Montana". (The actress is also Japanese as well...but we don't want to be put through that torture.)

I think this will convince you...

But I'm all for a golden age of anime to live-action. I know Japan already has tons of it, but it's HOLLYWOOD and they have better budgets and everyone gets to see instead of waiting for it to be released on R1 DVDs or bootlegs...

Do not make this!!! Please.
Make a Macross Trilogy instead.
Liked Robotech but bought the complete and unedited japanese Macross and fell in love. Much better show. Please someone stop this madness and let that guy who did Casshern make a trilogy of the Macross Saga.

I hate to be all fanwankish, but I agree. But the American version doesn't hold a candle to the Japanese version its close enough. And Toby's age isn't an issue... I just can't imagine him as a hot tempered young hotshot. Casey Affleck would make an excellent Max Sterling though. And the studly one could be Jack Black! And Pitt for Roy is a great idea. If I had to cast Rick Hunter, I would choose Josh Hartnett.

I only know Robotech. I wanted to watch the entire Macross saga, but never had enough time or interest. But for a while, Robotech was THE show I'd geek out about after school.

I would like to see some Japanese (original, old-school) influence in the picture. Somehow... any way possible. This is one genre that American filmmakers just don't get yet. And yes, I'm looking in your direction Mr. Bay (even though I wouldn't put Transformers and Robotech on the same shelf).

ROBOTECH news from cinematical:
Tobey Maguire Eyes a New Sci-Fi Franchise

by Erik Davis Sep 7th 2007 // 11:32AM

Warner Bros. is wicked smart: They looked and they said, "What's some of the hottest stuff out there right now that we don't have?" The answers: Giant f**king robots and Tobey f**king Maguire. And so Warner Bros. did what they do best -- they went out and picked up the rights to the anime classic Robotech, brought Maguire on to produce through his Maguire Entertainment and are currently seducing him into starring in the lead role. Better yet -- they're also eying this as their next tentpole sci-fi franchise.

Lawrence Kasdan is Writing a Live-Action 'Robotech'

by Jessica Barnes Jun 16th 2008 // 2:32PM

Despite a resume full of fantasy and action flicks, Lawrence Kasdan will forever be synonymous with 'Boomer' movies like The Big Chill and Grand Canyon. But, this is the man who wrote Raiders of the Lost Ark and Return of the Jedi, so it's not like a script about giant robots and alien invasions is that big of a stretch. The Hollywood Reporter announced that Kasdan has signed to write the script for a live-action adaptation of the Japanese anime, Robotech, for Warner Bros.

Also on the AICN frontpage and CHUD.

Interesting WB is still going through with this...maybe the stories about them behaving like jerks about "Speed Racer" are just exaggerated rumors if they're going through with another live-action anime...

IESB Exclusive: Producer Chuck Roven Talks ROBOTECH

The Flash is in a holding pattern currently with no new developments;

The third Nolan helmed Batman,

Sanchez asked everything from who would be a good villain to when we will be hearing about pre-production,

Roven says there is absolutely no news right now, that nothing has been talked about and no story has “been imagined” yet

From that article:
Maguire is rumored to be starring the in the movie as well.

I knew he was a producer, not sure if I knew he was potentially starring.... but I hope not.
I really like him in some things (Wonder Boys, Pleasantville) but he appears to have the onscreen emotional range of a 10 year old on Valium..... and I don't even know what that means.
As far as I know, all I've seen him play is geeky/awkward young people. I don't think he's been really all that exciting as Spider Man. He's been a good Peter Parker at times, though. If he's going to be Rick Hunter (assuming that's who he would play), he's the wrong choice.

Looking at earlier posts, I still agree with myself from two years ago:
Roy = Aaron Eckhart or Thomas Jane

Jane was in the shit-tacular Mutant Chronicles (which was just on Sci-Fi), he'd easily do this.
But they could be too old. I guess it's all in how old they want the characters to be.... and what storyline they'll use.... blahblahblah

Maguire's face and voice limit his range somewhat, but I actually think he's a better actor than a lot of people give him credit for. You already mentioned Wonder Boys, but that, taken with the Spider-Man films and The Good German, make for three very different performances. Granted he probably wouldn't be my first pick for most roles either.

Warner Bros. Chooses 'Robotech' Director (Heat Vision Exclusive)
Commercials helmer Nic Mathieu is in talks to helm the studio's adaptation of the mecha-centered Japanese cartoon series.
Borys Kit wrote:Nic Mathieu has been tapped to direct Robotech, Warner Bros.’ big-budget adaptation of the venerable anime featuring giant mechanical warriors.

The project has major franchise potential -- on the scale of Transformers -- and has been in development at the studio since 2007. Akiva Goldsman and Tobey Maguire are producing along with Matthew Plouffe, Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell.

Many writers have worked on the screenplay, but this is the first time a director has been in negotiations to board the project.

The producers conducted an exhaustive search in the fall to find a director who could bring a cutting-edge and modern approach to Robotech, which was a 1980s cartoon series from Harmony Gold USA and Japan's Tatsunoko Productions. It was re-edited and re-dialogued to combine three Japanese anime series to give the producers enough episodes to air as a daily syndicated series.

A sprawling sci-fi epic, Robotech takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific island. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves of alien invasions. The first invasion concerns a battle with a race of giant warriors who seek to retrieve their flagship's energy source known as "protoculture," and the planet's survival ends up in the hands of two young pilots.

The project is a coup for Mathieu, a commercials director whose spots are known for their inventive CG effects but who has yet to make his feature debut.

But Warners already has shown it has plenty of faith in the burgeoning filmmaker: He is attached to direct The Wind, a David Keopp-written sci-fi project that the studio picked up in spring 2012 after being dazzled by his impressive presentation.

Mathieu also is attached to direct The Story of Your Life, an alien drama being produced by Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps.

He is repped by WME, Anonymous Content and Loeb & Loeb.

Robotech Movie Back Online With Hollywood Gang, ‘300’ Scribe Michael Gordon
Mike Fleming Jr wrote:EXCLUSIVE: The 80s anime series Robotech has been a fascination of filmmakers from Tobey Maguire to Akiva Goldsman, Joby Harold, Gough & Millar, and Lawrence Kasdan. All have tried to adapt the series for the big screen. Stepping up to hopefully get it done is Warner Bros-based producers Hollywood Gang, with Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton producing and 300 and G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra scribe Michael Gordon set to write. They are already eyeing a filmmaker to steer that development and I’m told that Andy Muschietti is the guy they covet. In the 1980s, Robotech, which was brought to America by Frank Agrama and Harmony Gold, was the TV show which introduced a generation of American kids to the revolutionary visual style and open ended storytelling of anime.

Sony Takes Over ‘Robotech,’ Plans Film Franchise (EXCLUSIVE)
Brent Lang wrote:The studio hopes to move quickly into production on the live-action feature, with Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton (“300,” “The Immortals”) producing and Michael Gordon (“300,” “GI Joe”) writing the script. The series centered on humanity’s use of robot technology to fend off alien invaders and has an “Independence Day” meets “Star Wars” vibe. It is seen as having the global appeal necessary to become a blockbuster property.

James Wan Circling 'Robotech' for Sony
The filmmaker also has the offer and is in talks to direct Aquaman for Warners. Universal, meanwhile, wants him for Fast & Furious 8.

James Wan In Talks To Direct ‘Robotech’ For Sony
Mike Fleming Jr wrote:EXCLUSIVE:
Coming off steering the huge success of Universal’s Furious 7, director James Wan is in early discussions with Sony Pictures to direct Robotech, the feature adaptation of the 1980s sci-fi anime series that is being eyed as a worldwide franchise. Wan is one of the hottest directors in town after Furious 7‘s success — it has grossed $1.3 billion so far in worldwide box office — and has a lot of offers on the table. But I’m hearing he and Sony are going to try and make this work though the deal talks are in the beginning stages.

Hollywood Gang’s Gianni Nunnari and Atmosphere’s Mark Canton are producing a script from Michael Gordon, reuniting the trio who worked on 300. The original U.S. TV series Robotech was based on three different Japanese series and focused on the use of robotic technology found on a crashed alien starship that Earth used to fight off various alien invasions. The Harmony Gold-produced series has a place in the fanboy Hall of Fame for introducing a generation of American kids to the visual style and open-ended storytelling of anime.

THR JULY 17, 2017:
'It' Director Andy Muschietti to Tackle 'Robotech' for Sony (Exclusive)
Borys Kit wrote:Sony’s Robotech is getting It status.

Andy Muschietti, who directed the upcoming film version of Stephen King’s It, has been tapped to develop and helm the studio’s adaptation of the anime featuring giant armored warriors.

Muschietti's creative partner Barbara Muschietti will join Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton in producing the project, which is based on the 1980s cartoon series from Harmony Gold USA and Japan's Tatsunoko Productions. It was re-edited and re-dialogued to combine three Japanese anime series to give the producers enough episodes to air as a daily syndicated series.

Robotech is a sprawling sci-fi epic that takes place in a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology of an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific island. The technology comes in handy when the humankind has to fend off a wave of alien invasions.

Hollywood has been trying to bring the mechas to the big screen for over a decade, with Sony picking up the rights in 2015. The studio previously courted James Wan to direct the potential franchise before the filmmaker committed to Aquaman.

The project currently has no writer but the studio expects to work with the Muschietti siblings to find someone to execute Andy Muschietti's filmmaker. The project is a high priority for Sony and it is moving quickly.

Sanford Panitch and Matthew Milam are overseeing for Columbia. David Hopwood is shepherding for Canton, while Shannon Gaulding runs point for Hollywood Gang.

Frank and Jehan Agrama, who produced the original series, are also involved.

Muschietti got his start in horror — he made his English-language debut with the 2013 surprise hit Mama — and is awaiting the September release of It from New Line Cinema. The movie's trailer scored one of the largest views ever in a 24-hour period, with prerelease interest at stratospheric levels. The same applies to Hollywood interest in Muschietti, who looks with It to have pulled off the difficult task of adapting one of King’s classics.

The filmmaker recently came on board to direct the pilot for Hulu’s television series adaptation of the Joe Hill comic book Locke and Key.

Deadline September 12, 2017:
Wonder Woman’s Jason Fuchs To Write ‘Robotech’ For Sony
Dominic Patten wrote:EXCLUSIVE: Sony’s adaptation of Robotech found its director in Andy Muschietti back in July, and now Jason Fuchs is on board to write the screenplay for the feature based on the popular ’80s anime TV series.

Fuchs, who co-wrote the story for Warner Bros’ Wonder Woman with Zack Snyder and Allan Heinsberg, will be working with Muschetti to create the new Rototech from scratch, I’ve learned.

The high-priority Robotech takes place in an era when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology of an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific island. The residents of the third planet from the sun are now using that converted tech to fight off an impending alien invasion – aka big tentpole stuff.

Based on the Harmony Gold USA and Japan’s Tatsunoko Productions TV show, the big-screen version will be produced by Barbara Muschietti, Andy’s sister and creative partner; and 300 producers Mark Canton; and Gianni Nunnari. David Hopwood will be overseeing for Canton while Shannon Gaulding is doing the same for Hollywood Gang. Frank and Jehan Agrama, who produced the original TV series, brought the project in.

Having made his blockbuster bones with Ice Age: Continental Drift in 2012, Fuchs saw his Pan script hit the Black List the following year. Directed by Joe Wright, the Peter Pan prequel of sorts came out in 2015.

Fuchs is repped by WME and Brookside Artist Management.
