RUMOR: More On That New DUNE Project We've Been Hearing About!! Studio?? Director??

Merrick here...

A few weeks ago, a source named Checkyr plunged us into a Hell of Hells by informing us that Brett Ratner would direct the ESCAPE FOR NEW YORK remake instead of Len Wiseman. You can find that article HERE.

While this information has yet to be officially announced (in trades, or whatnot), it was quickly (and unfortunately) confirmed by THIS REPORT AT IESB.

Now, Checkyr is back with a new...extremely intriguing...tasty morsel for us to gnaw on. Due to a variety of factors, PLEASE TREAT THE FOLLOWING AS A WELL-FOUNDED RUMOR - there is a margin for error, if for no other reason than the situation we're talking about may be quite fluid.

For context: A while back, Byron Merritt (Frank Herbert's grandson) posted the following to a DUNE forum:

“We're getting VERY close to a deal. Heard that news today,

Lets hope so....hasn't worked out that way for I Am Legend.....

I just hope they cast Paul Atreides properly this time. At the beginning of the book, he's only fifteen, and small for his age. They need to get a real teenager to play the part, not some twenty-five year old adult Kyle MacNotPaulAtreides.

I've heard the name Daniel Radcliffe tossed about for Paul.
No.
No.
And not that Grint twit either.

interesting stuff. I'd also love to see (yet another) interpretation of Dune. Particularly from someone with a true love of the subject matter.

If we can keep the DeLaurentiis name off of this one, it might help.

I'm splitting this into its own thread. If it takes off, it'll need it.

That's clearly what was missing from the last two attempts at it.
I just think Radcliffe brings too much Potter baggage along, although I feel he could probably do the part well enough.
I can already hear the shoutouts from the groundlings - "Arrakis - Dune - Muggle planet...."

I tried my hardest to watch Children of Dune on SciFi, but it just didn't hold my interest.

This might be one of those impossible-to-adapt series.

but then again, I thought the same of LOTR, and they did a decent job with that.

It's not that tough.

You get a good script. (Bzzt on Lynch)
You get good actors. (Ok, nice job there...)
You make sure those good actors don't over-act. (Woefully failed this one)
You get good designs. (Again, failure. Cept the worms. And the Stillsuits)
You get good effects. (...)

Ah fuck it, that's too much work. Paramount wants a fuckin FRANCHISE, go after Wheel of Time. Dune is a cursed project.

Or better yet... GO FORWARD WITH HALO, YOU TWATS.

Hey beats John Williams stereotypical cliché stuff no?

no?

Williams:Oh look...here come storm troopers that resemble Nazi's. Let nick everything that Mahler EVER wrote...or any romantic composer.

As opposed to Elfam,
"Oh look...I have characters...let's just bring in the Trombone and the tube to create an um-pa beat and when we wanna go dark we just take it down an octave from the strings."

How about they switch it up and do a Baroness Harkoneen and get Cameron Diaz? She's already got the complexion for the role... think of the savings in makeup alone!

And on a serious note: Daniel Day Lewis for Duke Atredies. Taht role needs Punky Power, and DDL has more Punky Power in his pinky than just about any other actor out there.

Yeah! Why not go for the Nazi approach.

Wouldn't mind a Russian guy doing it. The accent would be cool but I'm too stupid to know any famous Russian actors...apart from Lenin and Gorbachev.

It real terms...What about the guy from Night Watch? Anton (in the film) He would have the perfeKt face for it but the body is too good (not enough Vodka)

I can't see the point.

The Lynch film is unique but definitely flawed...in some undefinable way. The Scifi channel series was as dull as dishwater.

It seems if you want an adaptation to be 100% faithfull, it's going to be crud and boring. Yet, if you loosely adapt it, someone's going to get all tetchy about it.

I'd like to see an "ethnically accurate" version of Dune... they don't have to go crazy, but the Harkonnens have to be based on Germanic/Baltic people (Finns if you wanna get technical), the Atreides have to look Greek/Mediterranean, and the Fremen have to look North African.

I'm not sure who'd make a good Paul... must be a young actor naturally, but if the Dune series is to be adapted to film once again, it might be a good idea to get some badass writer to infuse some personality in some of the characters... the stiffness of various characters would probably make a faithful adaptation seem dull. It's been a while since I read the book, but if I remember correctly Paul Atreides comes across as a young Spock. He was pretty stoic, despite the fact that he had cool super powers.

If it can generate money, and the rights' owners are willing to sell, then any book is "filmable" as far as the industry is concerned... :(
