MacGyver: The Series - The Movie

Postby Fawst on Mon May 05, 2008 1:31 pm

Yep, I'm psyched about the possibility. Not gonna lie.

Read about it here.

Not much to read, really, but the short version (of the short article) is that the creator of MacGyver wound up with the movie rights, and is in the planning stages currently of making it happen.

Oooooooooh, fuck yah...

Apparently, MacGruber is bombing at the box office. Maybe they should just shelve MacGyver - it's an idea whose time has come and gone already.

They should move on and make McDonald, about a secret agent who is able to make a burger using only two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, and a sesame-seed bun.

McGruber will likely not be playing anywhere by next weekend. The words Epic Fail come to mind. Another POS based on a stupid three or four minute sketch from Saturday Night Live. Rumor has it that it makes the Pat flick look like Brannagh's Henry the V.....

boxofficemojo estimates first-day gross was $1.6 million in 2551 theaters. That's pretty sad - $628/theater for Friday. Figure four shows per day, that's barely $150/show. But it only cost $10 million to make, so who knows?

Out of curiosity, I checked the bomojo entry on It's Pat. Maximum distribution was 33 theaters, for one week. They knew they had a complete dud on their hands, and they got it - $61,000 total gross. Why not go direct to video? The Ladies Man made only $13.6 million on a $24 million budget. Coneheads did $21 million, and I've read it had a large budget. But A Night at the Roxbury and Superstar both pulled in over $30 million. Man, what kind of world do we live in?

A world without enough good comedy. God thinks he's alleviated the shortage by sending us Sarah Palin and Rand Paul, but, in a rather dismaying turn of events, people are taking them seriously.

Aaaaand that's enough politics for this thread.

Only people with a serious brain cell count issue are taking those clowns seriously.

Strange, I read just good things about MacGruber, everybody at AICN and CHUD seem to like it.

I've heard good things about it too. But maybe the problem is this: It's based on a SNL skit, and the track record for SNL films is not good. And maybe SNL's audience is skewing older these days, and older people don't go to movies as much, especially silly comedies. And it's a spoof of a show that's 20 years old, and the kids who'd usually crowd the multiplexes for silly comedies have never heard of MacGyver. So they don't even know what they're looking at.

It's possible to make a good film that just doesn't have anybody in its target audience. So nobody shows up at the theater.
