From Coming Soon: Star Trek Crew on a Possible Sequel

"It would be incredible fun to get to do it again," director J.J. Abrams told us. "It is also insanely presumptuous to assume that it will work when it's out there, that people will like it, and that there will be a need for another one. If there is, the good news is that there's a deal for the writers and a deal for the actors. It's in place. We have not had one meeting. We have not had one discussion. There's no outline. There's no script. There's nothing. We're fishing for ideas."

Scott Huver wrote:CS: I'm on a one-man mission to plant the seed now. If you decide to revisit the character of Khan, two words: Javier Bardem.

Kurtzman: Oh my God!

Orci: Did you know we've actually mentioned that out loud as a possibility? What a great idea.

Lindelof: Come on. That's a no-brainer. That would be the most amazing thing ever. Who would even what to see these [new] guys then? That's the problem. You would just watch them for scenery.

From Newsarama: 'Star Trek' Beams Up $76.5M

Update Sunday, 5/10: Paramount is estimating that Star Trek will earn $76.5 million by the end of business Sunday, with final, official figures to be released Monday. If the estimates hold up, they will fall on the high end of industry expectations, and well within the studio's happy zone. Expect the official announcement of a sequel or two (the cast members are signed for 3 films) within days.

In four days it's taken more money than the last Star Trek film did from it's entire worldwide run.

From MTV: 'Star Trek' Sequel Will Deal With 'Unpredictable Future'
Word already leaked more than a month ago that at least one "Trek" sequel is in the works, and the series' gatekeepers confirmed to us that such memorable characters as Khan Noonien Singh and Dr. Tolian Soran are among the many characters whose life courses may have been altered by the events of the new film.

"All the characters who existed in the universe or canon we grew up with are essentially still around in some capacity," Kurtzman explained. "But their lives have been altered, so they may again intersect with our crew."

"There's a deal in place with the writers and the actors," Abrams said recently of "Trek" sequel plans, explaining that all the key actors are under contract to return. "If people like this movie, and there's a demand for another one, we would be happy to work on it."

Well, they certainly did — and Kurtzman and his writing partner Roberto Orci (who also collaborated on the upcoming "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen") told us that their minds are already swimming with sequel possibilities.

"I don't think we ever need to talk about time travel again," Orci explained, saying that Leonard Nimoy and other "original universe" cast members will likely be unnecessary from here on out. "In fact, in the end of the movie, the device that allows time travel is destroyed. So we're stuck with this universe we're in now."

who needs a time travel device? all you need for time-travel is the sun and a klingon bird of prey.

According to Memory Alpha:

Borg sphere generated a temporal vortex leading to 4 April, 2063, through the controlled emission of chronometric particles.

The thing with First Contact was that the story was good enough that it didn't matter.

New timeline... so all characters from the OS can be also re-birthed.

JJ and a boardroom full of writers will say to eachother -

"OK, so everybody knows that Khan was the best sequel to date... what we need is something like that, but using Khan in our sequel would be, well, just lame and obvious"

10 MONTHS LATER...

It is indeed.... Nestor Carbonell dressed up as a live action version of BatManuel.

He's gotta be quids in to play Khan, should the producers go that way... which they will - I guarantee it.

If they are going to go with Khan, then only Javier Bardem should play him. I saw that suggested somewhere, and I really can't get that out of my head. It's too perfect to probably actually happen, but it's cool to think about.

I think they should introduce Khan but not have him as the main villain yet, save him for ten years or so then we can really feel his wrath.

They should get Chiwetel Ejiofor to play a BADASS Klingon villain.

There probably is a good example from ToS but I haven't watched it in forever and I can't think of any from there. Plus ToS didn't really have recurring villains.

Other sources (TNG, the films...)

Probably the Borg Queen is closest and I wouldn't really think of her as badass. There was Tasha's evil twin on TNG...but no. The turncoat Maquis/Cardassian chick from Voyager. Oh...wait...did I just mention Voyager? My bad. The female shapeshifter from DS9, but she was more of an asexual blob than a female villain.

I'm probably forgetting someone...

Federation time cops?

I think it was a "Voyager" episode. There was some kind of rift or some such thing and Janeway was about to go into it when a ship popped up out of nowhere and told her she couldn't. Turned out that sometime in the 25th century someone found a ridiculously easy way to do time travel so the Federation had to monitor time lines and fix things that got changed. They showed up a couple times but I don't remember exactly where.

I don't quite recall it (especially being Voyager) but I guess it led into the time travel stuff and "Future Guy" in Enterprise.

Time travel.... fun in a DeLorean, but no good as a recurring theme in any science fiction series (that isnt directly based on time travel!).

TOS got the time travel bug in a few episodes, and some 'sort of past' themes (OK Corral, Nazi Planet etc etc etc)...

Interestingly enough - 'The Time Tunnel' and 'Star Trek' first aired within one day of eachother back in '66 - so Gene may have been watching and said "Hey, I like this time travel stuff - maybe we should work it into our series also!"

Time travel pretty much sank 'Enterprise'... that along with crappy stories and boring characters - there was this temporal cold war off in the future and yes, it seemed the timecops could pretty much jump around easily and go anywhere they felt like.

So how do you maintain any form of continuity in a show when (theoretically) nothing bad could ever happen or go wrong because the timecops would be able to keep fixing things and warning of future calamity?!? A wizard did it!

If there is a Star Trek XII - the writers should accept the fact they used time travel to effectively 'reboot' the franchise...

then...

MAKE OUT THAT WHATEVER NERO DID HAS PERMANENTLY STOPPED ALL TIME TRAVEL BEING POSSIBLE AND GET BACK TO FUCKING NORMAL STORYTELLING AND LEAVE THE TIME TRAVEL THING WELL ENOUGH ALONE... FOREVER!! (unless a writer comes back from the future and stops then from stopping time travel storylines - make sense?!?)

They showed up a couple times but I don't remember exactly where.

is this the episode where they picked up some guy in a super-futuristic ship, and he walked around observing them, and then they tricked him into letting them on his ship and found out the ship was from the future but the guy had stolen it in the past from some other time-traveling dude who had gone back in time? no, wait, i think that was a TNG episode. and the futureship-thief was max headroom.
how could i possibly improve over my old sig image? just add water...

That is right.

And the Time Cop Federation captain was none other than hunky actor Bruce McGill.

The rift in the "Voyager" episode would have let them go right to Earth but at the completely wrong time. They were debating it when the Federation Time Cop showed up and told them it was a no-no.
