J.K. Rowling's Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them

Warner is producing a new film or series of films based on Rowling's book set in the Harry Potter Wizarding World: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. A faux textbook from Hogwarts.

I haven't read it. Have any of you? I'm sorta into the idea of new movies in this 'verse, though it sounds like it will be kept quite separate from the existing books/films. Cash grab before the property cools too much? Or worthwhile? I guess only time will tell. Story linked above follows:

All ended well for Harry Potter in J.K. Rowling’s books, but it turns out the author isn’t finished with her magical world. Rowling and Warner Bros. have announced that she will adapt her Hogwarts textbook, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, into an cinematic adventure about that book’s fictitious author, Newt Scamander. Rowling’s first-ever screenplay is expected to be the first of a series of new films about the wizarding world that fans know well from the Potter books and movies.

“Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for 17 years, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world,” said Rowling, in a statement. “The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, 70 years before Harry’s gets underway.”

Scamander has long been part of the Potter universe, ever since he got a brief mention in the first book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. One of Hogwarts’ esteemed former headmasters, his image occasionally popped up in the wizarding school’s living portraits. Scamander had been an expert Magizoologist — a student of magical creatures — ever since a childhood fascination with hippogriffs and he went on to work for the Ministry of Magic. Beginning in 1918, he spent nearly a decade researching and writing Fantastic Beasts, traveling to every corner of the globe in his spare time to research the wizarding world’s most fascination creatures.

Rowling:
“It all started when Warner Bros. came to me with the suggestion of turning Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them into a film. I thought it was a fun idea, but the idea of seeing Newt Scamander, the supposed author of Fantastic Beasts, realized by another writer was difficult. Having lived for so long in my fictional universe, I feel very protective of it and I already knew a lot about Newt. As hard-core Harry Potter fans will know, I liked him so much that I even married his grandson, Rolf, to one of my favourite characters from the Harry Potter series, Luna Lovegood. As I considered Warners’ proposal, an idea took shape that I couldn’t dislodge. That is how I ended up pitching my own idea for a film to Warner Bros. Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for 17 years, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world. The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, 70 years before Harry’s gets underway. I particularly want to thank Kevin Tsujihara of Warner Bros. for his support in this project, which would not have happened without him. I always said that I would only revisit the wizarding world if I had an idea that I was really excited about and this is it.”

I still want Neville's story from Hogwarts during the events of the final book.

I don't doubt that she/they will milk entertaining stories out of all this. I just hope it doesn't end up being like the Star Wars prequels with WAY too many cute nods to the original series. I'm sure that there will be some, and as long as she doesn't go overboard, then I'm cool with it. Otherwise, bring it on, I guess. I'd rather milk a beloved world than be beaten over the head with "The Next Can't-Miss Young Adult Supernatural Franchise!"

I think Yates did a good job with all 4 final Potter movies, but it would be nice to see someone else get a crack at the world.

It would also be nice to see Yates get a crack at something else. I'm kind of stunned that this is the first gig he's landed since The Deathly Hallows, almost 4 years ago.

If this is WB's attempt to get the audience on-board, they shouldn't have bothered. I think they overestimate how much the average person cares who the director is. Whether this franchise succeeds or fails has nothing to do with whether Yates's name is on the front of it.

‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ Will Be “At Least a Trilogy”
The Studio will release three pictures, in 2016, 2018 and 2020, based on best-selling author J.K. Rowling’s original story and screenwriting debut, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.” Set in an extension of her familiar wizarding world, featuring magical creatures and characters inspired by Harry Potter’s Hogwarts textbook and its fictitious author, Newt Scamander, “Fantastic Beasts” will be directed by David Yates, who directed the last four Harry Potter movies, and reunite the filmmaking team of David Heyman, J.K. Rowling, Steve Kloves and Lionel Wigram.

That's a little presumptuous, isn't it? I mean what if the first one barely makes its money back?

I know H@rry Potter has never really been The Zone's jam, but here's a pretty cool new trailer for its spin-off, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them:

I worked on this film and it was boring. This trailer doesn't look so, so that's good. Then again it may just be the music that's adding the magical charm. It kinda lost me at 'Directed by David Yates' though. There's nothing individual or artistically excelling about his work in his Harry Potter movies. Felt rather bland.

Warner Bros. Finalizes Harry Potter Global Franchise Team
Polly Cochrane has been promoted, while Will Harrison and Nicole Blake have joined the group.
Alex Ritman wrote:Warner Bros has finalized the senior management structure of its Harry Potter Global Franchise Development (HPGFD) team, the studio’s group focused on continuing the expansion of J.K. Rowling’s universe.

Announced Wednesday by U.K., Ireland and Spain president Josh Berger, Polly Cochrane has been promoted to evp, group marketing director for Warner Bros, U.K. and Ireland, and chief marketing officer for the HPGFD group. She was previously svp, group marketing director.

Former HBO and Disney exec Will Harrison has joined HPGFD as svp, chief commercial officer and will take the lead on commercial and business initiatives connected to the Fantastic Beasts franchises, while Nicole Blake, most recently at DreamWorks Animation, has been named HPGFD’s senior VP, heading up the group’s Burbank offices.

Berger leads HPGFD, which was set up last year to "develop and execute a high-level strategic vision for the Harry Potter brand and its ancillary businesses," and works closely with Rowling's team at The Blair Partnership.

Fantastic Beasts 2 Confirmed for 2018; David Yates to Direct
Sandy Schaefer wrote:David Yates, director of Fantastic Beasts and the final four Harry Potter movies, has since confirmed that Rowling has already finished the script for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2. Now Warner Bros. Pictures has formally confirmed that the sequel is moving forward and is slated to arrive in theaters on the November 2018 date that WB had previously claimed for an untitled “event” movie (one which was always presumed to be the Fantastic Beasts sequel).

It lessens the contrast between magical and normal world. As it doesn't seem to be centered around a single magical location a la Harry Potter it seems to be a good move, I dont think it would work as well in a modern setting.

I have not; with the exception of The Departed, I studiously avoid Irish gangster pictures. But, okay, everything before that. And then Yoga Hosers.

Variety:
Joby Harold to Do Page-One Rewrite of ‘The Flash’ Script (EXCLUSIVE)
Justin Kroll wrote:While “The Flash” waits to find its new director, Warner Bros. has tapped Joby Harold to do a page-one rewrite to the script, sources tell Variety.

The pic has been on hold since losing director Rick Famuyiwa and while it waits to find his replacement, the studio has decided to take script in different direction.

WB had no comment.

Executives have been taking their time in finding his replacement. With Ezra Miller, who will play the speedy superhero, getting ready to shoot “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2,” they decided work on a new script in the meantime.
