By now, WB/DC releasing tonally misleading trailers for their films is well-known dirty pool; this one yet again underwent extensive re-shoots and is rumored to (yet again) be the victim of studio meddling.

However, I'm on board. Margot Robbie's performance was one of the only good things about Suicide Squad and the surrealistic imagery here is intriguing.

Black Adam is actually a villain (he's the bad Shazam, essentially), but once the Rock decided he was too famous to play someone else's heavy I think they started leaning into a more badass antihero approach to the character.

DC better reboot the whole Man of Steel-iverse before Gal Godot gets studly and it becomes all awkward and we have to squint to believe she's some kind of immortal--or they gotta go full Irishman with new levels of CGI youthening to avoid that pudgey Mr. Data effect.

Maybe. Joker was great, and I'm looking forward to the upcoming DC stuff a lot more than whatever's on the way from Marvel. Once WB stopped trying to copy the Avengers formula, their movies actually got interesting.

So Wonder Woman 1984 was probably the worst movie I saw this year. ZERO redeeming qualities. Pure dogshit. Avoid it like the plague. Thank God I didn’t pay to watch it.

there's a lot wrong with WW84, too much to list in one post, so i'll just mention one... if you're going to go to all the trouble of setting a movie in the 80s, even to the extent of putting it in the damn title, then your movie should probably, y'know, like maybe actually contain some 80s stuff? other than setting the opening action scene in a mall, and a short making-fun-of-80s-clothes scene that was shown nearly in its entirety in the trailer, there's practically nothing in this movie that wouldn't have been any different set in the 70s or the 90s or modern day. and seriously... not ONE SINGLE 80s SONG for the whole 2-1/2 hours? that's half the point of doing a movie in the 80s in the first place.

ok, i lied... 2 things. if you're going to go to all the trouble of making a movie about Wonder Woman, even to the extent of putting her name in the damn title, then your movie should probably, y'know, like maybe actually contain some Wonder Woman scenes? the first film was an origin story, we didn't even see her in her full Wonder Woman getup until halfway through the film, and i still think that film had more actual screentime for her as Wonder Woman than the sequel did. maybe a better title for this film would have been Diana Prince 19-Something-Or-Other.

I guess I liked the movie more than most people did. I'm not blind to its problems -- a lot of overwrought speechifying, the problematic elements surrounding Steve Trevor's possession and Middle Eastern politics, and a bunch of convoluted mythology that has Geoff Johns' fingerprints all over it -- but I appreciated it as a kind of satire that resonates with the current moment. Max Lord is an obvious Trump stand-in: a golden-haired charlatan who somehow ends up in the White House, whose grasping, shortsighted desire for more is both self-destructive and almost ends up destroying the world. It's no coincidence that the final conflict comes down to the embodiment of lies against the embodiment of truth. I'm not so sure that the truth would win, but Wonder Woman was always conceived as a superhero who teaches moral lessons as much as she fights bad guys, so this is right in her wheelhouse. And I liked the character of Barbara/Cheetah, who had more than she realized but is ultimately seduced and corrupted by Lord's empty promises. Yes, it's bloated and not all of it works, but I thought there was enough in there to chew on that I was sufficiently entertained. Maybe it's just because it's the first new blockbuster I've seen in almost a year.

In several of his comic-book iterations, Maxwell Lord is in control of a sophisticated surveillance network (one of them with the very Orwellian name of "Brother Eye"). There's not much of that left in the script, other than the satellites he uses at the end to beam into everyone's home, but I'm guessing the story was originally conceived as a riff on 1984 until it morphed into something else. I also believe this movie was intentionally cheesy, and Jenkins and Co. were mocking the '80s reputation as the decade of excess ("Life is good, but it can be better", etc.).
