xvid and divx dvd players

I rip all of my movies to xvid for backup (seriously), and compress them to 1/6th of a dvdr, then burn them onto a disc, so I can have 6 movies on one burnt disc.

I'm under the impression that with standalone players that support xvid and divx codecs, I'll be able to just drop one of those discs in and they'll whir up. Granted, I'm basing most of this on speculation, but that's worked out for me pretty well in the past.

Any recommendations on players?

I've got a bud who imported one of those players from Thailand. It'll play AVIs, XVID, VIDX and all those other evil files used to play pirated movies. You burn the files onto a CD or DVD, and you can just pick which folder to open and play whatever you like. I guess I'd have to ask him what it's called, but they look like they're worth it.

The Philips 642p works like a charm if youre weary of importing something from Thailand.

Its such a great little player i bought two of them. One for the bedroom and one for the Living room.

Great for burning a lot of episodes of a TV show on one disc and watching them marathon style.

It plays: DVD-Video, video CD, audio CD, JPEG image CD, and CDs loaded with MP3, MPEG-4, or DivX 3.11/4.x/5.x files

There's a simple remote control hack that also makes this baby region free.

The Philips DVP5900/37 DivX DVD Player is supposed to be an update to this player.

I can't vouch for it cause ive never seen it, but aside for it being set up for High Def Video
it also plays Divx 6.x, MPEG4 and .Wma files.[/u]

I bought a cheap Yamada player, and I have to admit I don't use Xvid / Divx much on it because of a few reasons.

1) It wont fast forward trhough movies, and keep the lipsync - nightmare!

2) The quality on the video's is really blocky, especially on fast moving scenes.

3) I tried to update the firmware on the player, and knackered it even though I followed the cdr burning instructions to the letter.

My advice would be (I've checked other Divx players and they all suffer the blockiness on fast moving scenes) to just use tv - out on your PC - you can get devices that transmit signals from one room to another and also come with remote controls for your pc.
