HAN SHOOTS FIRST

Postby kortanaskew on Wed May 03, 2006 7:54 pm

Dunno, if this is a hoax. But apparently hits USA TODAY tomorrow.

I even e-mailed old Harry to see if he can sniff it out beforehand..

http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1867436

Apparently the OT, comes to DVD completely untouched.

Who cares? I'm all about the Star Wars films, but this release, if real, will only be good for comparisons. I still prefer the OT: Special Edition DVD box set.

I have the VHS copies of this...but I will probably end up buying these.

Lucas has done it again. I wonder if the vaseline used to cover the tires on the Speeder will still be visible like it is on my VHS copy?

id like to be the first to put my ass and reputation on the line and call bullshit on this. i dont think its gonna happen. i could be wrong, and if so, well, lucas has positioned himself squarely in the way of another 50 bucks from me. goddamnit.

Although it would be nice to not have to change discs three times during each movie...

I doubt it's true. We all know it was BS when Lucas asserted that he'd never, ever release the originals on DVD. But this seems a bit too soon.

If it is true, though, I'll be buying it. And most likely they will be the ones I watch on occasion.

Never bought a copy cos they useed to be shown routinely on television about 10 years ago, one after the other...my fave was always the Chistmas with "empire".

I wouldnt buy it if I were you. Wouldnt give Lucas the satisfaction of knowing that he can release, re-release and re-edit, then do a nostalgic release.

Smells like capitalism to me.

I seem to remember in a talkback a long time ago (internet time months can be years) someone sayin that Lucas was going to wait for the format war to get started, dump the OT untouched on standard dvd, then start releasing everything all over again on blueray/hddvd. I hope this is the start because i have bitched to no end about not having the OT on dvd to my friends. Still, sounds to good to be real.

Seems like the report was true. The Official Site reports that this set comes out in September.

What the hell changed Lucas' mind?!

And their two disc sets included the 2004 editions and the Unaltered Editions.

IT IS TRUE!!!

http://starwars.com/episode-iv/release/video/news20060503.html

From StarWars.com!!!

In response to overwhelming demand, Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release attractively priced individual two-disc releases of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Each release includes the 2004 digitally remastered version of the movie, as well as the original theatrical edition of the film. That means you'll be able to enjoy Star Wars as it first appeared in 1977, Empire in 1980, and Jedi in 1983.

I doubt that is the main reason. Sure diehards will buy it but the general audience who didn't care that he changed them in the first place and who already own the current boxset will not be impressed. I think the hardcore fans make up a small percentage of the dvd buying market.

Hopefully, this means we'll also get some real work done on the OT films, like new scenes involving the Senate, Bail Organa, Palpatine, Alderann and Coruscant in general in this or future releases. Now that Lucas is letting the purists get what they want, he can get around to inserting what he wants into his movies without criticism.

Now, if only Hideo Kojima would give into fan pressure and release Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake as it originially appeared on the MSX console with Sean Connery as Big Boss, Michael Madson/Mel Gibson as Snake and Richard Crenna as Colonel Campbell...

I really don't see that. Compare the avalanche of VHS versions from the 80's to the handful of versions since the 95 THX vhs boxset. If they were that interested they could have been pumping out DVD versions for the last decade.

USAToday.com

The original films' video quality will not match up to that of the restored versions. "It is state of the art, as of 1993, and that's not as good as state of the art 2006," Ward says.

So I'm thinking either the laserdisc transfer or the print they cleaned up just prior to working on the Special Editions.

I dunno....I suspect I'll end up buying it (what with mind-tricks working on the weak, of which I am one)...but it genuinely feels like a bit of me dies each time Lucas does this.

I rate George Lucas....I think the good he contributes far outweighs the bad....I mean...I've never seen or heard him say that he thinks he's a great director for example.

But in the last 5-6 years he does seem to have made a habit of saying he's not going to do something - then far too soon after does a complete U-turn. What happened to the "Now I've done all 6 I can concentrate on smaller projects". It turned into 100 episodes confirmed for Star Wars TV Series is what.

I just want to respect the man today for more than his actions of yesterday, if that makes any kind of sense?

I'm waiting for the final, fuck-all, ginormo box set that you KNOW is coming a few years away with all six films bundled as one, Special Editions and Originals altogether.

Truth told, I like a number of additions in the Special Editions, but could do without a few others. Honestly, I'd love to be able to do my own edit over all six films and trim out the little snags.

That said, fuck it. I own me my Star Wars and I don't need to own it 17 times.

Yup MW, I like your style. Though if the above is anything to go by, even the all 6 box-set is simply filler until the WTFT gets made (yup, thatd be the What The Fuck Trilogy)

Lets face it - we're all going to be posting thirty years from now (probably by thought alone by then) abut how episodes 13-15 should never have been made, ruined the careful work of the Dodecahedrolgy (Ummmm......Adam, help! What term should I have really used!)
and bodes very badly for the recently announced 9-picture deal to continue the franchise........

.....and yet, we'll all buy it.....and again, and again :D

I see absolutely no reason why you should be exempt from The Grand Fleecing, as history will come to regard this.

Go and buy this set (it will undoubtedley be good) and start saving for the next reinvention, which normally raises its ugly head in the run-in to Xmas, in the UK at least.

Last I heard the 6 volume set is closer to three than two years away....but you only have to read this thread to see how much stock you should put in that kind of info.....it could just as easily be announced 6 months from now.

Join the ride!

Considering I do not own any of the original star wars, could this possibly be the set I buy?

My mum has them on VHS, but I havent lived with her for 5 years.

Sould I wait until the 6 film set? Is there ANY idea of when they will be out?

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH, the insanity!!!!!!!

Seriously? I reckon neither - seems to me that LucasFilm only release on current technology once the Next Big Step is less than twelve months away from being commonplace in our homes. I mean how long has DVD been around as dominant to the outgoing VHS? Bloody years. What, the OT couldn't have been done any sooner? Yeh right. And don't give me that "I've been so busy working on the prequel trilogy" crap Lucas - it could have been done within 12-18 months as long ago as 2000 and you know it.

Then begins the 2-3 year period of going without, the denial, the pain - perhaps liberally peppered with some nonsense re-releases - improved sound, added scenes and the like. They just make us want it more.

We'll get our HD and Blue Rays once people have started replacing their TV's with holographic projectors or whatever else is coming next......and don't expect it to be any time soon neither.

As the man in black says himself:

the only way I'd want to see episodes 7-9 at this point is if he handed off writing duties to some of the EU writers who have helped shaped the time frame after ROTJ. Mostly because those who are even remotely interested in the EU know the basics, Vader has a clone that's "activated", Luke retarts the Jedi order, Han and Leia have kids and they're powerfull Jedis, Chewy gets killed, ect.

The other thing he needs to do is hand them off to other directors ala ESB, as it's largely considered the best of the films for a reason...
