THE STATE Complete with a LOUIE Poll!

Postby bamf on Tue Aug 29, 2006 5:00 pm

THE STATE on MTV was my favorite sketch comedy show growing up. SNL had fallen from grace, and each week I would push the volume up high when that metal theme song began the show. Barry and Levon, Porcupine Race Track, and of course Louie are some of my favorites.

Now there is a double edged sword here, the show did not last past three seasons, that sucks, but that means when it does happen it wont be a best of treatment, thats good. As of Febuary 05 the dvd is still in a holding pattern, and I read an interview a few months ago with the RENO 911! guys that said its still going forward, just very very slowly. Its the music rights that holds it all up, much like The Wonder Years, but thats another thread.

Its difficult to say what State alumni is my favorite, but they all were pretty damn funny, and most are still working today. Unlike SNL, where the funnier people seem to die unexpectantly. If you havent seen the show, then you are in luck my fellow zoner. Youtube has the bounty you seek. Now, lets get on that dvd eh!

Loved The State. It was clever when other sketch comedy was dead. Michael Ian Black and Kerrie Kenney were my favorites, but who didn't love Ken Marino and Louie's balls?

Every time I see Marino on Veronica Mars I think, "Heh, balls." I'd love it if they could put some of the material they did for MTV's You Wrote It, You Watch It on the DVDs. I just want to be able to watch "Shootin' Skeet" whenever I feel like it.

My favorite for YWI, YWI is the one with the precocious kid.

Babysitter (Kerri): Okay, time for bed
Kid (Thomas in footie pajamas and pacifier): (Takes pacifier out and laughs condesceningly) NO.

And I think it ended with an invasion by Canadians...

I liked "The State," but it was no "Kids in the Hall." Not by a damn sight.

I can't really remember any particular skits (I was stoned for most of the '90s) except for that "balls" guy. It was funny the first time, but it got old in a big hurry, IMO.

So it was announced at Comic-Con (during the BALLS OF FURY panel) that there WILL be a DVD for THE STATE that includes EVERYTHING they ever did. I believe they said the release date was October.

Never seen THE STATE, but I saw this thread and figured you fellas would appreciate the news. Also, there has been talk of a film based on some STATE characters.

OMG, they'd better have Doug and his posse in the movie.

"I'm outta heeeeeaaaaaarrrrreeee!"

But that's probably the next TV DVD I'll reserve. :D

All I remember is a sketch where two funky characters "lost their groove". The only solution was to put their butt.... in the pudding.

I laughed my ass off at that sketch.
Never watched another minute of the show that I remember.
