What Should I Watch Today?

Postby Nordling on Wed Dec 20, 2006 9:56 am

I'm off today from work, all studly and happy. I got Tombstone Pizzas waiting and 2 2-liter bottles of Dr. Pepper. Some of these films I've seen multiple times, some just once, and one (VIRGINS FROM HELL) that I've never seen and will likely get play. It's gonna be a good day. So what should I watch?

Edit to say I also have A FISH CALLED WANDA 2-Disc but it wouldn't let me add it to the poll for some reason.

Miller's Crossing - if that list was a pile on the floor and you told me I could watch one, I would have grabbed it - seen it before, many times, but I'm Dumbledore for the Coen brothers.

then maybe Bugsy, as I haven't seen the new cut and it would make a nice gangster double bill

Here's what the back label for VIRGINS FROM HELL says:

"This has to be one of the wildest films ever to come out of Asia. The action kicks off with a girl biker gang clad in leather hot pants raiding a casino drug den... And then it starts to get crazy.

The gang is led by two girls who were forced to watch as the leader of the drug syndicate murdered their parents and stole their land. To take revenge they train a gang of hot biker babes to take on Mr. Tiger the bad guy. Unfortunately they lose the battle and are taken prisoner. Incarcerated in a women's prison camp, they find themselves the playthings of the camp's vicious lesbian wardress. But worse - they are to be used as guinea pigs in an experiment aimed at producing an aphrodisiac drug that will turn all women into helpless sex slaves."

This will be the greatest movie ever.

If I had that stack to pick from Id watch a crime film double feature: Millers Crossing & Bugsy. Then follow it up with the great Exploitation classic Virgins From Hell. :)

MILLER'S CROSSING - not the best Coen film (Big Lebowski is one of the craziest things I've ever seen), but the Coen's don't make bad films. Except for that fucking Zeta Jones one, but Wheezy saved it.

I'm still discovering shit about MILLER'S CROSSING and I've seen it like 10 times now. I'm noticing things like how they use the color brown in the movie (it's awfully prevalent).

Yeah, I'm a dork.

Fuck yeah, seconded. That film never gets old for me. It's just such an amazing depiction of life at sea during that period... and the relationships are beautifully handled. The sound design is phenomenal... I mean crazy-good... when I saw it in the cinema, that quiet opening blew me away before the first shot was fired. I FELT as if I was with them in the ship, creaking away around me... absolutely one of the finest films I've ever seen.

Out of the list THIS is the one i'd currently be in the mood for. Some spectacular set pieces in there. Damn fine nautical action and big Russ doing an excellent job.

Miller's Crossing got my vote, but I actually prefer the amazing Hitchcockian vibe from Blood Simple....one of the best "first movies" by new directing talent in ages.

damn, i've thought of starting a thread like this lots of times, but never did. i wanted to list all the movies recorded on my DVR and let everyone vote on which i should watch.

maybe we can make this a general-purpose "what should i watch tonight" thread that we all can use.

Master and Commander is brilliant. As others in this thread have pointed out, the detail in the sets and sounds is amazing. It brings the sailing-era naval epic to a new level of realism. Great acting, too, not just from Crowe but from Paul Bettany and several others.

Dino hasn't had his medication today.

Master and Commander is terrific. If he hates it, it's because he's so damn jealous that he can never make a movie that good. He made the dumb version of Kong, after all.

I love Dino, and IPAMPILASH at almost every post he makes, but a the goodamn putz doesn't a know the good movie when he a sees it, no?

I absofuckinglutely LOVE Master and Commander, it's so rich in History and detail, I love it. The Kid who gets his Arm cut off also played Octavian in the BBC/HBO Series Rome by the way, he a great young actor and I think the bravery his character shows in the film when faced with losing his arm is astounding and credible, he's an officer and couldn't be seen to be weak in front of the men he was in charge of.

Great movie, if you don't like it I feel sorry for you for missing out.
