MONSTER SQUAD THE DVD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Postby bastard_robo on Wed Feb 21, 2007 4:15 pm

I know theres a monster squad thread, but I couldnt find one for a DVD PUSH.

WELL, WAIT NO MORE!

The Monsters are coming from Lionsgate! When? Nobody knows.
(Posted In Cult DVD News )

As we have discussed here before it was confirmed by Don May JR of Synapse that cult favorite The Monster Squad was hitting DVD this year but couldn't say from whom and exactly when it would be released. It's now been confirmed that Lionsgate are releasing a 20 year anniversary Special Edition but the date has not been made public. Some say in a couple of months other before Halloween the latest.
Fangoria.com reported today that the DVD would be far from barebones, with a brand spanking new 2.35 transfer, unlike the 1.78:1 HD transfer that's been shown on Monsters HD for quite some time. Also a commentary with director Fred Dekker and cast members plus interviews and other featurettes so it looks like it's going to be a nice package.
All I can say is FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC!
Please check Fangoria.com for some more info about this much awaited disc and some news about Night of the Creeps, not so fan fucking tastic news I'm afraid but news that gives us fans a little hope.

Ha! And to think I almost wore my Stephen King Rules! shirt to work today. I rarely do cause no one gets te reference and starts saying stuff like "You like Stephen King??!?" in the same tone that Bill Hicks heard "What you readin' for...?"

I really enjoyed the Q & A we had with Quint, the director and cast at the Drafthouse last year with this movie.

My mom almost wouldn't let me watch this on video at my friend's house when I was 12, because it was PG-13. Lame.

Actually, she was very back and forth on that stuff. When I was a little kid (maybe 7?), an older kid from up the street used to show me porn. Not movies, just Playboy and whatnot from his older brother's collection. It didn't mess me up, it didn't make me crazy, but she flipped the F out when she found out about it. Kind of became an overprotective mom after that, to a point. See, she would let me watch movies like Alien/Aliens, Jaws, Near Dark, The Lost Boys... but if there was nudity? Yikes... I'd get botched copies of Conan the Barbarian taped off of HBO with the nude scenes removed. And if I wasn't watching something with her there, she'd be very wary of me seeing it. Monster Squad, case in point. MTV, the station that I used to wake up at 6am, crawl down the stairs, and watch for hours til my parents woke up when I was FOUR, was somewhat banned for me because it was too suggestive.

I STILL blame her for the fact that I didn't get to see Terminator 2 in the theater. My best friend's mom was taking him and his brother to see it, and I could have gone, but because my mom wasn't answering her work phone, I didn't have permission. So I didn't go, because I'm a GOOD Doobie. :P

Then again, she DID let me watch a lot of good movies because she worked in a video store and got them for free. And she always got me the best and newest games/systems. And stuff like that. So whatever. Besides, it's the movies she DIDN'T know I was watching that mattered. Robocop? Oh, HELL no, she was NOT told I saw that one ;)

And she didn't try to kill me when she learned I smoked the devil's grass!

So... cool mom, with some lame moments.

The End.

They really should put this disc out on BluRay/HD-DVD as well as standard DVD. And this would be the greatest disc of all time if it was called the "Got Nards Edition" ;)

MONSTER SQUAD THE DVD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Postby bastard_robo on Wed May 02, 2007 7:20 am

THE SPECS ARE HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Personally I've never found that classic line to be that classic, mostly because I think "nards" is a silly name for "balls" and sort of takes the air out of a otherwise good line. But who cares?
Monster Squad fans will get the brand spanking new DVD release of their favorite teen adventure horror film on July 24th along with a crisp new 2:35 transfer (a first since the Japanese laser disc) and an assortment of fantastic extras that should please everyone.
This will be labeled as a 20 year anniversary release and as you can see on the cover they've modernized the artwork for those who have no idea what film this is. Click it to get a better look.
I just want to see the face of unwitting parents when a little innocent looking girl spouts the line "Come on guys. Don't be chicken shit." and the kids talk about "stick" and "homos". But those were the 80's, when the world wasn't concerned by the PC way of life we live today.
Me, personally, I don't know if I can wait that long for this fine piece of celluloid but I can finally put my bootleg DVD to rest.
Below is the complete list of features on this disc that were posted on Creature Corner

Audio commentary by writer/director Dekker and cinematographer Bradford May
- Audio commentary by Dekker and actors Andre Gower, Ashley Bank and Ryan Lambert
- Wolf Man’s Got Nards! The Making of THE MONSTER SQUAD documentary
- Deleted and extended scenes
- Monster Mania reunion featurette
- Vintage interview with Tom Noonan
- Poster and still gallery
- Theatrical trailer
- TV spot

Sweeeeeeeet.
DVDEmpire got it up for pre-order so click away.

Now at the risk of me sounding like a scratched record that's fucking up a dead horse. BRING ON NIGHT OF THE CREEPS!

And heres the Pic of the dvd cover... its cool, but I would of preferd the poster that they used on the VHS box....

In general I hate when they create cover art for the DVD that isn't the poster of the film.

I'm trying to decide if this movie is actually worthwhile purchasing or is it just nostalgically marketed, shitastic, product.
I recall really liking it the one time I watched it, I was about 11. But whether it actually holds up in the way, say The Goonies does is troubling me. The fact that I'm thinking so deeply about The Monster Squad is obviously much more troubling but I try not to think about that.
Elitism is positing that your taste is equivalent to quality, you hate "Hamlet" does it make it "bad"? If you think so, you're one elite motherfucker.

This isn't Neverending Story. That movie does NOT hold up well over time. Sure, it's fun, and nostalgic, and interesting for what it is, but... no.

Monster Squad? That's a great movie. And I guarantee if you haven't watched it in years (like me), you're going to get a whole different level of appreciation for it when you see it again. This is a pretty brutal movie, and I think it pushed the envelope of what was "allowed" in a PG-13 film.
