40 years ago today... BATMAN!!

The greatest TV in history is being made right now. The worst TV in history is being made right now.

40 years ago today... BATMAN!!

Postby Koola on Thu Jan 12, 2006 11:24 am

Wikipeadia reports... in today's selected anniversaries:

1966 - Batman the television series, starring Adam West, was first broadcast on ABC.

So, I guess that makes it the 40th anniversary.

That's about it. Just wanted to post it.

I remember it first made me wonder why any superhero or any person for that matter without the ability of flight would need a cape.

More importantly, Victor Buono as King Tut.

Tut! Grrrrowww!

As a wimpy geek, I preferred Roddy MacDowell as The Bookworm. You've got to be devoted to plan massively complicated book-related thefts and death traps.

This ties into the thread I'll start this afternoon, "When I was a kid, I watched ..." which should be about unusual circumstances.

Example: When I was four, I watched Lost in Space and liked it. Then I saw this other, new space show. It was called Star Trek (in living color, on NBC) and it was really different!

OK, that's not such a good example, but it is the sort of thing I lived through. Not unlike seeing Batman first-run.

For the only time on this board, I will write:

I'd hit it.

I hate that phrase.

She's definitely #1. I loved how they would tuft her eyebrows so they resembled whiskers.

Michelle Pfeiffer a close second place, just for sleaziness. Lee Meriwether was bland. Eartha Kitt was a fine singer and a passable actor, but Catwoman isn't black. No racism implied.

I preferred Earthat Kitt. Nobody could match her Catwoman voice.

Why hasn't anyone mentionec Vincent Price as Egghead.

Do not EGG-sagerate the EGG-sact EGG-sample of EGG-lands EGG-alitarian regime. IT gets me EGG-cited just talking about it.

The movie of the tv show is one of my all time faves. Watching it again, older and wiser, its surprising to see how many levels some of it works on. Watch Bruces pop shot face as Ms Kitka tells him about the russian cossacks. And the scene where batman, robin, commissioner gordon and the irish one are walking to and fro, trying to decipher the clues. The choreography in that scene is mesmerising and hilarious. Seriously check it out. The timing and delivery is top notch, and all with a straight face. And dont get me started on the phone call to the navy......
...and so forth.

Some days you just can't get rid of a bomb...

Edit: Is this the exchange you're talking about, Hermanator?

Commissioner Gordon: It could be any one of them... But which one? Which ones?
Batman: Pretty *fishy* what happened to me on that ladder...
Commissioner Gordon: You mean where there's a fish there could be a penguin?
Robin: But wait! It happened at sea... Sea. C for Catwoman!
Batman: Yet, an exploding shark *was* pulling my leg...
Commissioner Gordon: The Joker!
Chief O'Hara: All adds up to a sinister riddle... Riddle-R. Riddler!
Commissioner Gordon: A thought strikes me... So dreadful I scarcely dare give it utterance...
Batman: The four of them... Their forces combined...
Robin: Holy nightmare!

THR JULY 26, 2017:
That Time on 'Batman' When Alfred Fought the Joker
Ryan Parker wrote:Alan Napier appeared as the trusted butler in all 120 episodes of the classic 1960s TV series.

Alfred Pennyworth has always been vital to Bruce Wayne and Batman's success, both in the comics and onscreen.

The butler is father figure, a mentor and a trusted colleague.

And with it being made clear in the new Justice League trailer (which already has more than 23 million views on YouTube) that Jeremy Irons' incarnation will once again take a more hands-on role with Batman's adventures, it is time to look back at the heroics of the first live-action Alfred, played by Alan Napier.

Napier, who died in 1988 at the age 85, appeared as Alfred in all 120 episodes of the 1960s Batman television series.

And of all that character's most memorable moments, the top one has to be when he fought The Joker (Cesar Romero), who forced his way into Wayne Manor with a hostage in the season two episode, "Flop Goes The Joker." The best part of the three-minute clip is when Alfred and The Joker sword fight with fire pokers.

Someone yells, "Be careful, Alfred! He's a criminal!" To which the butler responds, "I know, madam, but a very poor fencer."
