The IT Crowd

The greatest TV in history is being made right now. The worst TV in history is being made right now.

The IT Crowd

Postby vicious_bastard on Tue Jan 17, 2006 3:46 pm

Finally a promising-looking UK sitcom. Written by Father Ted/Black Books creator Graham Linehan and produced by Ash Atalla of The Office, The IT Crowd is set in an office IT department occupied by computer nerds Richard Ayoade (Mighty Boosh), Chris O'Dowd(?) and Katherine Parkinson(?). Chris Morris (The Day Today, Brass Eye, Jam) plays the boss of the company - nice to see him back in front of the camera.

How can it fail? I have loved everything Linehan has done so far while Morris hasn't done any acting for bloody years. Early Feb on Channel 4 I think.

Fairly uneventful trailer.

It's a very old-fashioned sitcom. Victoria Wood recently said that old-fashioned style sitcoms were dead because The Office was so good, you can't go back to studio sitcoms. So I kind of hope that this is proof that that's not true.

From this nice little interview.

gotta admit - based on nothing more than that little teaser they've been running for the past fortnight, I've been really looking forward to this. And now I know morris is in it, well that just made my day (its been a largely uneventful day).

Now if only Morris were writing it. Nathan Barley really surprised me, and considering I've lived in Brighton for about seven years, it nailed down damn near every character you'll see there. I still think I'd prefer a new series of Brass Eye or The Day Today than this I.T. sitcom.

Morris' character is the best thing in the first ep. It is very Father Ted, right down to Chris O Dowd's mannersims. Better than a lot of new things I've seen recently.

BUMP!

For those who didn't watch it online - first ep tonight - set your video!

I love Ayoade as Ned Smanks in Nathan Barley, and his appearance in the Boosh is one of my favourite bits!

"you know nothing of the crunch"

Also, Linehan has some pretty good work behind him, so I have very high expectations for this. The interview that he, Charlie Brooker and Simon Pegg did in Edge a couple of months ago was one of the best things I've read in ages......

Two episodes on tonight - the second one is much better.

Morris's A-Team photo was hilarious - "Bodie, Doyle, Tiger, Jewellery Man, the whole lot!"

I was mostly preoccupied with a sick dog, I didn't like the canned laughter (maybe it was real but I didn't like it) but it did make me laugh a few times, not sure it's got legs though.

6/10 on first impressions for me, it's early days still and as I said I was kinda preoccupied.

I will check it out on E4 at some point.

Did anyone catch The Mighty Boosh on Tues? I thought they were trying a little too hard. Some funny stuff, lines and observations but the man in the moon shit was way to random. Cheekbones made me Pamp a little.

Whats up with your dog?

Thanks for your concern Dog

Not sure quite yet, fluid around his lungs but we don't know whats causing it, he's a little better and can breath now but is in more pain than before, he keeps on crying which is strange for a double hard bastard 9 stone (124 lbs) Bullmastif called Bronson.

Yeah anyway off topic and a downer for sure :(

Hope Bronson's on his way back to being better JL.

I thought Friday's double-header was pretty good - made me laugh out loud several times. Not too hard to see the Ted/Dougal dynamic at work in different clothes - but considering Father Ted was cut down still in its prime thats no bad thing.

Chris Morris is hilariously over the top in it - dashes of Bishop Brennan thrown in for good measure. Now they've established the premise it will be interesting to see how it goes for the next few months - but I think it'll do well.

I love The Office...but I don't agree with that quote from Victoria Wood. The Office was shot naturally - but was also laden with misery/apathy/cynicism and pure cringe. Its what made it great - but there should always be room for just plain old fashioned Capery...and the more orthodox sitcom setting is still a good medium for this. It all comes down to the writing...the UK shows still insist on trying to mine dry a couple of writers within one season, instead of taking a leaf out of the US approach and spending some money on a bank of talent, that constantly rotates/refreshes over the seasons.

....and yes, the bit with the photo of "The A-Team" was classic. As was the improvised screen saver and the War On Stress (tm)....

At last!

Postby Abe on Mon Feb 06, 2006 12:26 pm

Well, I'd like to say 'At last! A funny british comedy!'. Seriously, everything that has been produced in the last 2 years has been pretty poor, on the edge of awful in most cases. It's great to see Lineham back to what he does best, and you can sense some real Morris input in some of the comedy too. I laughed a lot! In some cases a tear came to my eye... the new emergency number, the screensaver, the A-team bit, Moz's 'FIRE! FIRE! HELP ME! Looking forward to hearing from you...' e-mail... etc... Looking forward to next weeks'...

'If you were a murderer, what would you be known as?'

'The Gardener"

'Why?'

'Because I'd leave a rose at the scene of each victim'

'What would be your weapon?'

'A Hammer'

... looking forward to it!

And Garth Marenghi's Dark Place needs a second series. Still this kicks Green Winfs arse.

Tony, did you say the interview with the guys of the Boosh on the tv the other day? The Culture show I think it was, following them behind the scenes while they were on tour... looked great actually, they seemed to improvise a lot of stuff on stage too, you'll have a blindin' time I doubt don't it, mate.

Douche

Oh, and Darkplace is coming back in a new format as far as I know, and apparently the DVD's are creeping towards release as we speak...

We yanks have to wait for Season 1 on DVD since the company decided to put it out in Feb. to probably coincide with the American version as a midseason replacement. :( Stupid Canada is airing the UK version and I don't know about the American G4 airing it, though they should.

I am anxious to see Season 2, though I have no idea when it'll show up on YouTube.

And they do have Richard Aoyade as Moss. I hope they'll get Noel Fielding as Richmond because I can't picture anyone else but him playing that part.

Chris Morris was magnificent, I'm sad to see him go - although his departure was hilarious.

Not sure how I feel about his son...

Chris O'Dowd looks good this season. He's slimmed down or something...
