If Aerosmith and Evanescence can sell records, so can Adam Lambert.

I said it before: Adam has an amazing voice, but amazing isn't good enough. He sings one song, two songs, three songs, okay. You're fine with that, and kinda blown away. But sitting through an entire Adam Lambert concert will kill you. By twenty minutes in, your ears will be bleeding. By thirty minutes in, your eyes will be bleeding. By about half an hour in, your rectum will be bleeding. Flee! Flee for your life!

That's my assessment of Adam.

in related news, future upcoming rolling stone/american idol scoops include:

Randy Jackson announces he's black
Simon Cowell announces he's British
Paula Abdul announces she's a druggie
Ryan Seacrest announces he's also Dumbledore
Ruben Studdard announces he's studly
Kris Allen announces he's boring
Justin Guarini announces he still exists (actually, that WOULD be quite a scoop...)

A paparazzi got a video camera on some ex-AIers: Gokey, Anoop, L'il Rounds, and Matt Giraud. He asked them what the best part of being on AI was and Gokey sang, "Money, money, money!" And then he immediately stopped short and started laughing uncomfortably, knowing that probably wasn't the best thing for pure and good I-have-a-dead-wife-and-thanks-to-all-my-fans Danny Gokey to say.

I saw that last night but was in no rush rush to post it.

A little torn on the news. Paula's useless as a judge. She's incoherent most of the time, almost never offers constructive criticism, and hardly ever has anything technical to say about the singers.
On the other side, she's usually mildly entertaining.

Is she any less useless than Randy?

I think I'll miss her personality and wackiness. The new chick (giradelli or whatever her name is) might offer some more technical insights, but when you boil it down that kind of criticism doesn't make for good tv. I've always figured that the judges gave all the contestants legitimate critiques OFF stage and pre-show, but when the lights are on and the camera's are rolling, its all about the entertainment, even from the judge's perspective.

I agree with this, except the part about her being mildly entertaining. I much prefer Kara (even if Kara sometimes has her Paula-like moments).

The only thing Paula was good for was being a plaything for Simon. She was a horrible judge.

randy is totally useless. i agree that paula is sometimes entertaining, usually when she's high on something. randy is never entertaining. they could replace him with a parrot who says the same exact 4 phrases that he uses for every contestant, and no one would notice the difference. kara is annoying when she's not flashing her bikini body. i'm not going to watch next season anyway, but that has nothing to do with paula not being on the show. the last couple seasons have been terrible, and they just keep getting worse. last season was easily the worst... except maybe the taylor hicks season, but i've blocked that one out of my memory. i made the mistake of checking out a couple episodes at the start of last season, and ended up watching the whole thing. i wont' make that mistake again.

I just read that Ellen DeGeneres will be replacing Paula Abdul on American Idol and I can honestly say - I'm actually looking forward to the New season now. Ellen is hysterical and her personality is amazing, how she will measure up as a judge I don't know but this should be interesting.

just an FYI in case you're interested

aren't american idol judges supposed to have SOME connection to the music industry?
i decided to leave this show long before paula did anyway, so it doesn't really matter to me. this news certainly does nothing to change my mind on that decision.

Meh, this might be the straw that broke the camel's back for me. Ellen is only tolerable in SMALL doses. To think of her making her self-effacing jokes 40 times a night, EVERY NIGHT is just a scary thought. And she doesn't have any connection to the music biz at all, so the notion of her being brought in as a judge is silly. Shit, I'd rather see her as the host than a judge.

Oh well...

See I think of Nemo when I think of Ellen. But tbh I've probably only seen one or two episodes of her actual "Daytime" shows, so I can't say safely that she is Always funny but I was under the impression that she was entertaining to most. I guess I am her only fan here in the Zone then?

*crickets*

So be it, I stand alone! I think this show needed someone to inject the funny and I can think of a lot worse people to fill that slot. Norm McDonald comes to mind (sorry Norm).

Anyway I think she will do an awesome job, you'll see. Once the show starts people will be commenting on what Ellen brings to the show. Hopefully I am right and those comments will consist of mostly compliments and very few insults.

norm macdonald? now THAT i would watch. or bill murray. someone who a) wouldn't take it too seriously, or would deflate the show to what it really is... a glorified talent show, and b) would make funny, snarky, belittling comments about the show and how terrible it is. basically, someone like me.
hey.
I should be the new american idol judge!
actually, no thanks. i need to keep my soul uncrushed and intact.
anyway, i've seen a bit of ellen degeneres's show because it's on at the gym at work sometimes. basically, it's the same kind of crap that's usually put on daytime tv and targetted to obese middle-age women who are waiting for their kids to come home from work. in other words, pointless stupid crap.
i don't really know for ellen herself. except that the whole dancing thing she does is really annoying and stupid.

I remember Ellen from standup shows and specials in the early 90's. I'm very impressed with the career she's carved out for herself.
I'm not in favor or against her addition, but it IS an odd one.
-Do I dislike it because she has no music background?
-Do I like it because she's just a "normal fan" and can offer that opinion?

Or maybe I just want to see her girlfriend more.

I'm in favor of Ellen on AI.

She's entertaining. She's smart (smarter than Paula, anyways ...)

And she's got a wit that can slice and dice Simon when necessary!

you know what this show needs? it needs to let the contestants a) have backup dancers, b) use props, and c) perform as duos or groups. if they allowed that, then we might get contestants like these guys

and that would actually make the show entertaining enough to keep watching.

so from what i hear, there are still some teenage girls and sexually repressed middle-age housewives out there who don't believe adam lambert is Dumbledore.
well, even those people won't be able to doubt it once they get a gander of his new album cover
man.... even the most flaming Dumbledore person has to take a look at that cover and say "wow, that's Dumbledore!"

the thing i wonder about when i look at that cover, though, is how much computer processing power did it take to airbrush away his acne scars. you could get a noxzema commercial with that complexion!

Same here, but that's always been my "strategy" since I first watched it because of the William Hung commercials.... then morbid curiosity simply becomes curiosity and I'm stuck watching the whole damn thing.
How much Ellen actually adds to the show will be another factor as well.... if she's just there to cut some jokes, then I'll change the channel. But if she actually inserts the opinion of an average music fan, then I'll be intrigued to hear what she has to say.

they suck you in with the crappy singers at the beginning. but that's the worst part of the show. i used to watch for the funny stupid people at the beginning, then i got sucked in and stuck watching the rest. but now, the stupid people are just so painful to watch that i can't even enjoy that part. most of them are so self-aware at this point that you can't even pretend they're self-deluded idiots. they're like balloon-boy minus the balloon. i like to laugh at pathetic stupid people as much as the next guy, but only when they're REAL pathetic stupid people.

those mean old nasty american idol contestants won't have simon cowell to kick around anymore!

looks like it's the beginning of the end for this show, and none too soon. although it will apparently just mean another crappy idol-like show with the x-factor.

"I was offered a lot of money to stay on," Cowell said. "But that wasn't the reason behind it. I wanted to do something different. I wanted a new challenge."

so, he got sick of the challenge of sitting around and making snide, sarcastic comments about crappy singers so he could have the new challenge.... of sitting around and making snide, sarcastic comments about crappy singers.

oh wait, there's no age limit on x-factor and they allow groups. that's, like, TOTALLY different.

maybe it won't be so bad though, as long as they have these guys on the show.

I liked the first girl they put through and the kid stuck in 70se with the two broken wrists. She seems like she might have a chance if the pressure doesn't push her into an opiate addiction...

The kid is just annoying enough to be interesting and holy shit, I was not expeting a halfway decent marvin gaye song out of him.

I also like the itallian guy, seems very likeable and I am fairly confident that Kara would hit that and that Beckham was ready to jump on That 70's Guy.

Nobody's posted here yet about the General Larry Platt! I have a feeling the General's going to get way more than 15 minutes. Actually, it's already been a few days for this Web sensation and "Pants on the Ground" is a bonafide hit.

Check out an excellent "Pants on the Ground" mash up (the best one I've seen) and more about Larry Platt's impressive history as a civil rights activist at my blog: http://tinyurl.com/ygzhwh9
