I don't know if its just me but I am an olympiholic. During these two weeks my father and I TiVo all that we can and veg in front of that glorious screen. I was wondering if anyone else out there had this, or if this is two nerdy a group.

(I even give up movies for a while)

I don't tivo everything, but I'm really into extreme sports, so I definitely enjoy watching. Is it just me, or is the music they're playing in the background for the opening ceremony ridiculously hilaaaarious in a cheesy 80s sorta way? (i.e. Video Kills the Radio Star was playing for Mongolia, and now Love is in the Air for New Zealand . . . hehe . . . hobbit love :P)

EDIT: The commentators even just said it - I thought it was just the background music for the station, but they're REALLY playing old 80s pop music as ALL of the teams enter at the Torino stadium . . . craaazy shit

hahaha I know - the commentators are totally gonna start going the family guy route

On another note, I hate curling . . . but I'm not allowed to say that cause my uncle was an olympic curler. How much do you think you had to fuck up your life to suddenly decide, "hell, there's nothing else for me to do, I'm gonna brush off ice with a broom so a big disc can slide on it . . . competitively!"

(sorry sorry, I know this belongs in the EFBR, but it's all in jest, I swear!)

I'm waiting for the half pipe and the down hill skiing (mmm, Bode Miller) . . . and yeah, luge definitely rocks (did you see "grandma luge"?!)

The curling thing was a joke anyway seems like the stupidist sport to me. Was your uncle really a curler in the olympics? Half Pipe Down Hill, the biathalon (or the swedish shoot and run technique), Speed skating, and hocky man thats where its at. I loved THink playing behind the US one of my favorite songs. This years going to be good.

"Swedish shoot and run technique"

IPAMPILASH!

Yeah my great uncle, actually - he was on the olympic curling team for Canada, but I don't know what year (never met him - just have a pic of him playing). And yes - I almost forgot about Hockey - so worth it just cause the fights are now not only amusing, but cultured!

That would have been great. Video Killed the radio star in Modern dance by the weird guy with the mohawk. They could start a Riverdance like showq on Broadway and become the next big thing.

it doesn't matter how many medals canada actually gets - as long as they get the 2 that matter the most again... GOLD in men's and women's hockey... again...

that is all...

oh - and predictions are in for Canada vs. Italy in hockey today (italy only being in it cause they're the host country) - 30-0...for canada - the commentators said that might be a slight exaggeration -but either way - should be a cakewalk...

just like every other team we play...

So we end the day with two German golds and one US, and one canadian. OK so I've got a question. Why is figure skating billed as the most popular event of the Winter Olympics?
It just makes me laugh most of the time.
I mean they are superb athletes and all but when they try to "emote" it just seems so fake and almost like ballroom dancing. (dont get me started on dancing with the stars.)

This may not make much sense but I think figure skating is also watched by people who are not that interested in sports and competition. they watch it because they play music and are doing figures.

On another note golg medals for France and Estonis

Yeah I'm going to be watching the US Canada game. Both teams look awesome US seems more heavy hitting based while Canada looks more to finess. Though US had a good game with Germany 4 to 0 right now. It will be a good match later. I can't wait for the mens hockey.

I've been watching the Winter Games from the start (My favourite of the 'Games') and I have to admit it, as shameful and despicable as it may be, I can't hide the truth that every event I watch, I'm barracking for everyone but the U.S.
I know, I know.....it's pathetic. But I can't hide the truth. Although that U.S Snowboarder who won gold yesterday was pure brilliance.

Anybody watch the downhill?

Was it just me, or did the U.S. coach in the start house have a voice that made it sound like he'd rip you a new one if you didn't do like he told you to. Very bully-like and menacing.

Can someone explain something to me about the Olympics? How is Women's Hockey a justifiable "International Competiton," but Rugby isn't? The US, Canada and Finland are the ONLY competetive teams. BUT the IOC won't recognize Rugby because it wouldn't be well represented by all countries???

Sorry, I've just been pissed about that for a while now, and after watching the Women's Hockey this weekend I got that bug up my butt again.

And what's with the Pairs Figure Skating? What ever happened to the days when a slip took you out of Medal contention? Now you can wipe out like a Surfer on Meth and win the Silver Medal? What is this the Special Olympics? "Good Job China! You're so wonderful! I think somebody is getting McDonald's tonight!"

I'm not trying to be Scrooge McDuck or anything. I obviously WATCH the Olympics, but stuff like that just irks me.

So 6 nations having, in your words, Mediocre teams (losing 16, 12, 8, 5 goals to zero) is different from 95 nations competing internationally http://www.irb.com/WR/? I guess it is...

I'll admitt that I underestimated the number of countries playing rugby but I bet these teams have also huge differences in their quality

Now that I think of it none of us should have compared a discipline at the winter olympics wqith one that would be up for the summer games.
