PBS announced today that six new Monty Python specials are in production for broadcast on PBS in 2006. Each of the exclusive to PBS six one-hour programs will focus on one member of the original Monty Python troupe - Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, Michael Palin and Terry Jones - and showcase favorite clips from the group's television series and movies, mixed with new footage. The five living Pythons - Cleese, Idle, Gilliam, Palin and Jones - will each produce and write their own episode, with the five collaborating on a sixth special to honor deceased member Chapman.

Awesome news. New footage?!? Unseen or proper new I wonder? Give us a heads up, my yankee chums - PBS is free right? Surely the beeb will get the rights at some point.

Should make for some excellent television. They have achieved so much between them over the years that each program will be packed with funny and interesting clips.

I am sure the BBC will show these.

New footage is probably new interviews for the individual programs, right? They cannot have kept much more Python stuff secret.

They will surely turn up online. How do they make money? Is it subsidised?

You're mother was an apostrophe. I hope there is no brand new stuff - there was something new a few years back which was very disappointing and so unmemorable that I can't elaborate.

[threadjack]I know they need the money, but I HATED those PBS fundraisers! They would break into Doctor Who for HOURS showing me the coffee mug with the disappearing TARDIS that my parents would never get for me. Bastards![/threadjack]

the local PBS station used to have movie marathon weekends for their fundraisers, and it was great. saw a lot of great movies for the first time due to it, i.e., "Catch 22", "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner", "Cat Balou", "The Great Escape", and some of the original Flash Gordon flicks too.

The worst thing about PBS and NPR is that over the last 25 or so years their funding has gone from about 60% government, 40% other to 10% government, 90% other. Those telethons to keep the local stations going push harder than ever. In addition, the "underwriters" or "sponsors" or whatever they call the corporations and institutes that prop up the big shows now have actual commercials before and after many programs. Commercials on PBS. Ick.

I don't understand US economics. Ads on a public broadcast network? Taxable unemployment benefits?!?

I caught the Chapman episode when I got home from night class. Lots of great skits. I never realized how many he had a hand in writing. The new footage was all the other members relating Graham Chapman stories.
