The Prisoner 2: Back 2 Jail!

The greatest TV in history is being made right now. The worst TV in history is being made right now.

I referrenced the prisoner quite a few times in my dissertation on Government Surveillance....made the professor chuckle. Mind you, he did work the military so he knew pretty much what it was based on.

He loved the show.

That's some decent firepower, acting wise.
Still - not convinced this won't be spoiled cat food.

Ok. I love Mckellan but the rest...

FUCK OFF!

It shouldn't happen, it can't happen and hopefully it won't get further than a pilot.

I love the idea of Ian Mckellan taking the role of number 2 but only if he takes the place of Ian McKern who appeared in 2 episodes and was possibly the most famous number 2.

I like the premise, I just don't see it working.

It needs to be kept small scale in most of the episodes because it's that claustrophobic feeling of being isolated from the rest of the world.

Otherwise, this ends up being just another 'Enemy of the State'

Love you too CK.

I just don't know about this. I'm really torn. I'm such a fan of the first series that I'm scared it'll go on for 6 seasons until the figures dip, rather than run it's natural course.

The old, 'flog a dead horse' expression.

I think this could work very well but....they need ME! I'm a paranoid fucker and I did research into all of this. I'll be picking it apart like nothing.

You couldn't really do that with the original show because it was so Sci-fi and yet so 1984 and yet, based in truth (see previous articles I've posted on the Prisoner).

I just see a whole 'Enemy of the state' thing happening now.

Loss of claustrophobia, loss of purpose, losing sight of the real goal......anti establishment and being a voice of freedom on TV.

I say that but it's being done by ITV...a commercial station (sation ). Will they have a dig at ad revenue? Will they dig at society on a commercial station? I doubt it.

As shit as I think this will be...I quite liked the viral marketing on its own.

How can you make a show about tracking a man and keeping him in one place when you can trace anyone almost anywhere in the world and if you wanted to monitor them, that would be easy.

Erm....NO.

I can't see it working, like a lot of people. It will never have the paranoia, the cluastrophobia and the heart of the original.

I would have been happy if the show had a different name, in fact, I'd probably enjoy. This is not something that needs a revamp. At the same time, I'm very very interested to see where they take it

I don't know if you've checked back at the official site recently, but in the past few days it's posted some tasty morsels:

Ian McKellen's blog

Video of first script readthrough

A picture of where the Village will be: (if you look up "Swakopmund" on Wikipedia, the architecture there seems very reminiscent of Portmeirion.

I think this is going to be interesting...and even though I'm sceptical....I think it might be good. One point which may be odd - "half actors live in South Africa" - are all the villagers going to be EFFrican?

I know what you mean, but they weren't filmed as a two parter. The final episode was made in a rush and tagged on. That's why McKern's haircut keeps changing.

I thought it was because he was involved in another project at the time, which was why the entire elaborate shaving sequence ended up in The Prisoner. I understand there was all kinds of insanity going on in those final two episodes - at one point McGoohan had wanted all the juke boxes Number Six passes to be playing different songs and the Beeb said : "uh, fuck no?"
Which is why we end up with a rousing jukebox chorus of All You Need Is Love.

Apparently there was a whole year between filming the last two episodes.

"Once Upon A Time" was conceived as a series finale, and McGoohan thought there would be a second series. Then ITV cancelled it and "Fallout" was hurriedly put into production (McGoohan was given a week to write it) to finish it off.

AMC's The Prisoner

Postby TheButcher on Fri Jan 09, 2009 11:30 pm

From The LA Times: TCA press tour: AMC plans a remake of "The Prisoner"
Maria Elena Fernandez wrote:On a high from its award-winning, critical darlings "Mad Men" and "Breaking Bad," AMC is remaking "The Prisoner," the TV cult classic from the 1960s.

The original series, co-created by Patrick McGoohan, was influenced by Cold War politics. The new version, produced by Trevor Hopkins ("Dracula"), reflects 21st Century issues, such as liberty, security and surveillance, while keeping the original's paranoid, tense tone.

The six one-hour episodes begin with a man (Jim Caviezel of "The Thin Red Line") who resigns from his job and wakes up to find himself trapped in a mysterious and surreal place called The Village, with no memory of having arrived there. The Village residents are identified by number and have no memory of a previous existence. The Village is controlled by "Two" (Sir Ian McKellen) who is locked in a battle of wits with "Six" (Caviezel) throughout the miniseries.

Caviezel said he was initially interested in the role -- his first TV series -- because McKellen was a part of it, but then was taken with the entire project when he read the script.

"This blew everything out of the water that I was thinking about doing," he said.

McKellen said he watched some of the episodes of the original in reruns because he was busy doing theater when it first aired on TV in England in the 1970s, and reminded the TV press that there were no VCRs back then.

Two of the other actors on the series are Ruth Wilson ("Jane Eyre") and Lennie James, who is most known for his role on "Jericho." (Note to "Jericho" junkies: Love ya, please don't e-mail me).

The miniseries was directed by Nick Hurran and will air in November. AMC also is airing the original series on http://www.amctv.com.

This thread needs a name change:

The Prisoner 2: Electric Fence-aloo.

(Or maybe not)

The footage looked ok, quite interested to see how it turns out.

Having recently gotten thru the box set, I dont hold the original in too high a regard. Strong opening episodes, and some crackers along the way, but overall it was more bad than good in my opinion. I know thats probably seen as heresy, but I just got sidetracked along the way, and was not able to get back on board. The bedtime story, cowboy and mind swap episodes really turned me off the show. By the supposedly awesome finale I just didnt care anymore....

McGoohan always thought the series was watered down unacceptably. He laid out a plan for a limited series of seven episodes, then was told they needed twelve or thirteen, and finally forced into the seventeen that were made. McGoohan, in fact, sometimes spoke of "the seven that count." Those are

"Arrival"
"Free for All"
"Dance of the Dead"
"Checkmate"
"The Chimes of Big Ben"
"Once Upon a Time"
"Fall Out"

The others, including the three you mention - "The Girl Who Was Death," "Living in Harmony" and "Do Not Forsake Me, Oh My Darling" - were filler. Entertaining filler, but filler. So it goes.

Be seeing you.

The preceding is pretty much canon law in the Prisoner-verse. Try watching those eps in that order.
It's not exactly what McGoohan had in mind, but it's as close as we'll ever get.

Although it was trippy as hell, the last episode ( following the much stronger Once Upon a Time )
never really worked for me. Too....cartoonish.

Was Number Six actually John Drake?

Let's not start that one!

Of course, there's always the question of
"Who is Number One?"
"You are, Number Six."

"Fall Out" was too much for me, too much a departure from the style of the rest of the program. Even allowing for the hypnosis and mind control and evil injections in other episodes, "Fall Out" made no sense unless you assume The Prisoner is tripping half the time.

One can find support in the argument that it was Drake by dint of the fact McGoohan used a publicity shot of himself as John Drake in the show's opening opening sequence ( and a couple of subsequent stories ).
That wasn't a photo of McGoohan as The Prisoner - it was a photo of him as Drake.
Also, I'm stoned and greased out of my mind on Vicodine.

Did either of those come in a container with a penny farthing bicycle on it?

One can argue that the photo in the dossier was whatever they had lying around, but that would be convenient and possibly specious. McGoohan argued both for and against the Drake/Prisoner connection, at times seeming to take one side based on whatever worked for him legally. (I recall reading that he backed off at times for fear the creators of Danger Man/Secret Agent would make legal claims towards The Prisoner.)

I like it better if he is Drake - gives the series depth and history and perspective.

It also adds some weight to Drake as a character, who was really more an object rather than a person.

Did anyone else read what McKellan said in his blog that someone posted earlier in this thread?

Sir Ian wrote:Peter, much more savvy online than I was, carried on regardless of the studio's constraints with his own regular comments online. He even courted the rumour-mongering Ain't it Cool News, then thought to be every studio's potential bane, by inviting its prime critic to Middle Earth. A special chair was built to seat the mighty Harry Knowles close to the filming action. Thus the fan-base was informed directly about our progress on set.

Strong opening episodes, and some crackers along the way, but overall it was more bad than good in my opinion.

There were also changes made to the running orders on broadcast, so some important arc points were mixed up in the "filler" episodes.

Thank you, FG. I was working from an old book and neglected to consult the web for other possibilities.

I kind of trust AMC because they're doing some good work right now, but I've got to say after seeing the original series, James Caviezel seems like a questionable choice for No. 6. Maybe he was the biggest star they could land. Or maybe he gave a great audition, I don't know. But Patrick McGoohan had a charisma that came from a mixture of intensity and humor. Caviezel's intensity is more of the confused and angry variety, like he's just been slapped in the face with a fish.

I'm really not sure. Still not sold but I will give it a go. That looks like a mish mash of the first two eps of the original prisoner with the Chimes of Big Ben swapped for the Statue of Liberty. I see what they did there...Genius! Absolute Genius! Very clever, I bet there's lots of back slapping and smoking of cigars for that one. Seriosuly. I hope they have that guy a Ferarri and was told he could have kids and put them through college, on the company's tab because it was so smart.

Oh I'm sure there's some exec out there going, 'I don't think they are going to get it, can we write something into the script like, "It's a symbol of freedom to the whole planet!!!", before going back to rebooting Barney with more merchandise than the last one.
