I love it but it's so derivative of MST3K what with the silhouettes etc why not simply revive that instead?

The silhouettes are horribly distracting. One think I liked about The Film Crew was the lack of the silhouettes. Josh Weinstein certainly looks different these days. I never cared for his MSTK3K work, but I think that had to do with his voice.

The Wired article quotes the former head geek of Colorado MSTies Anonymous, Nathan Heckel.

All of the current projects of the MST3K people are derivatives of it.

They all seem to have "moved on" from 3000, yet they're all still doing it pretty much in one form or another.

Some Tber's are posting that Hodgson wanted to go back to MST3K with some of these folks but Jim Mallon, who I guess owns Best Brains etc, apparently wouldn't let them use it. Also they accuse Mallon of holding up Nelson's Rifftrax for a year syaing it was too close to MST3K. If this is true that's fucking sad.

Just managed to get to wathcing this (couldn't on my phone).

It got scope for more comedy. It is more of the same but I think it could a little more involving.

That could be a good thing or a bad thing. Judging by previous effort, I'm going to trust them.

Hurrah!

My bitter disappointment that it isn't the old MST3K is somewhat abated...why not! I needs me some snark.

Mile High Sci-Fi is doing a local MST3K ripoff. "Denver's hottest comedians riffing on the worst movies!" It angered me inexplicably--in part because they act like it's an original idea, but mostly because if I'm going to pay to watch Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, I wanna make my OWN jokes.

And also, all of Denver's comedians suck. Maybe they can haul Josh Blue up there for Logan's Run.

I've got hold of quite a few of these recently. The Star Wars Holiday Special one is fantastic.

However, a few of them have been a bit bland - I think because the films they riff aren't rubbish enough.

Yeah. Bring on Predator, Commando, Pretty in Pink and Things to do in denver when you're dead.

In my opinion, there's no enough love for this.

I would love to see something up on the main site about Mike and Rifftrax.

Not enough is mentioned in the main site.

Rifftrax are really funny, but yes they are best when mike and "the bots" are on them as well. But, even with mike solo, Predator was pretty good. I second the Starwars Christmas Special and also highly recommend Daredevil (w/Kevin and Bill), Independence Day (ditto), and Jurassic Park (with Weird Al).

The only problem I had with that clip was that it was "live"... the beauty of MST3K (for me) was that it felt like I was in the living room watching the bad movies with Mike et al, not watching THEM watch a bad movie.

I loved MST3K back in college/the 90s. Not sure if I'd be able to revisit them today though.

Look, I love MST3K. But whatever THAT was...was rubbish. Why were there 6 of them? Why did it feel like they were reading a script?

The movie looked more watchable than that 5 minute clip.

Hard to believe they are selling that as a finished product. Obviously, they are reading from scripts, but I believe the MST3K programs were rehearsed a number of times before they were shot. Surely, these alumni could have done the same. For me, part of the problem it doesn't fly is they don't have Kevin Murphy or Michael T. Nelson, who were two of the sharpest writers. They are the reason I enjoy RiffTrax and even The Film Crew.

so sorry, MST3K remains hilarious if you watch the right episodes, There are plenty of mediocre shows and a number of outright dogs (most of the Japanese monster flicks, IMO). However, there also are some that will remain hilarious so long as anyone remains alive to get the references. I have about half the series on VHS and am slowly dubbing over to DVD.

Dark Horse announces new MST3K comic series and merchandise line

Matthew Jackson wrote:Dark Horse Comics announced Thursday that it will release a new MST3K comic book series to coincide with the new episodes, along with a new line of merchandise based on the show. According to the official press release, though it took a while, Dark Horse has been exploring the license for more than 20 years.

"I first encountered the show in 1992 and immediately fell in love with both the concept and the characters," said Dark Horse VP of Publishing Randy Stradley.
"I began inquiring about the license in 1993, and now — a mere 24 years later — we have Comics Sign!"

Nerdist:
MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 COMES TO COMICS IN THE NOT TOO DISTANT FUTURE
Blair Marnell wrote:MST3K fans from around the world are eagerly awaiting the premiere of the reboot series on Netflix later this year. But that’s not the only good news on the horizon. Mystery Science Theater 3000 is set to make its comic book debut courtesy of Dark Horse Comics.

Dark Horse has announced that a Mystery Science Theater 3000 comic book series is in the works, in addition to special MST3K collectibles that will be produced and released by Dark Horse. But how can MST3K become a comic? Dark Horse has a lot of experience translating licensed properties into comics. For this title, we can probably look at Dark Horse’s Doctor Horrible and The Guild comics as a template for MST3K. Rather than attempting to fully translate the experience of either web series, the comics took the time to expand upon the characters and the worlds that they inhabited.

Although it plays for laughs on the show, the Satellite of Love is basically a prison for the host and his robot sidekicks. They may have a lot of wacky misadventures, but there’s definitely the potential to see other sides of life on the station without losing the series’ signature sense of humor. But if Dark Horse really wants to replicate the MST3K vibe, then perhaps the host and the bots should mock other comic books within their own comic book series.

It’s also unclear which of the three hosts would be featured in the Dark Horse series. The Nerdist Podcast‘s Jonah Ray is staring in the upcoming MST3K reboot series, but Joel Hodgson and Mike Nelson‘s characters are still quite popular with the fans. Perhaps the comic will find a way to incorporate all three hosts, or even introduce a new host for a new medium.
