I don't want to say you either get it or you don't, but if you're bored by the show I'm not sure I can convince you why it's good. I get that the pace is slow. For me, the stuff that works more than makes up for it:
1) The visual inventiveness. Scenes like the one in the season opener, where Tulip's version of purgatory looks like some kind of stage play by way of Lars von Trier, just aren't seen on any other series that I can think of (or Jesse's hotel fight with a pair of regenerating angels, or the Saint of Killers reliving his family's death over and over, etc.). Their budget is obviously limited, but
Preacher is more creatively ambitious than pretty much everything else out there, which makes it a lot of fun for me.
2) The delight at seeing career supporting actors like Pip Torrens and Noah Taylor relishing the complex and quirky roles that they actually deserve.
3) The sense of humor. This more than anything is entirely subjective, but scenes like the inbred son of Jesus tapdancing on television or God riding around in a gimp suit are almost breathtakingly blasphemous, and I'm continually amazed that they get away with it all. At times there's a drier sense of humor alongside the giddy lowbrow filth, like a new vampire reporting a "significant lifestyle change" to his employer, or giant block letters over a shot of character standing at a bus stop that say BUS STOP.
It's not a perfect show; I have no illusions about some of its structural problems. But it's also unlike anything else on television in a way that I find refreshing and engaging, and it kind of makes me sad that nobody seems to watch it.
