GAME OF THRONES

So I just read a set report (http://winteriscoming.net/2012/10/new-in-depth-report-from-the-set-in-northern-ireland/).

Despite the spoiler warning, I read on. It was in reference to the Red Wedding. I think I'm going to fucking cry now that I know what the fuck the outcome of that is. Seriously, what the fuck was I thinking, reading that. Fans of the book know its coming, but as a n00b to the series, and not knowing what's going to happen next, that was a jarringly shocking spoiler I just read.

Fuck.Me.

Dude! Stay away from any bit of news or comment section (outside of the classy folks in The Zone, of course) relating to Game of Thrones if you don't want your ass spoiled six ways to Sunday. This is something that I have also learned the hard way.

Also I would recommend getting blackout drunk as soon as possible and then maybe sort-of convincing yourself that you just dreamed the whole thing.

Fievel, why did you look? You just said you weren't going to!

For anyone else who may NOT be spoiled yet, if you value shock and drama, don't read any spoilers for the show. Just by viewing this discussion you've probably inferred too much already. Just back away slowly and come back in 6 or 7 months.

Question for Game of Thrones watchers WHO HAVE READ THE BOOKS.
I am almost done book one, and I'll also be buying the DVDs for both seasons tomorrow. The new season starts at the end of march, and I'm a slow ass reader, but I would love to be caught up to the show's happenings in the books by then. Do I need to read the whole second book to get caught up to the show?

there's a story on the mothersite about a stupid fucking rom-com staring Leslie Mann and the dude who plays Jaime Lannister on GoT. An innocuous enough story, you say? Sure, until somebody in the talkbacks mentions a GoT plot point that I have yet to reach in the books. :P

Yeah, different. Not nearly as explosively depressing as the first spoiler I encountered a few months ago re:The Red Wedding.

It was something about Tyrion, and something that probably should be expected, but still...

But speaking of spoilers, I begin to wonder at what point the differences between books and show will add up (or multiply?) to the readers going 'holy shit, I didn't see that coming'. I really think someday that point will be reached.

I'm not so sure. Martin predicted this too, back in season 1. But season 2 (and, from what I can tell, season 3) didn't differ from the books in any meaningful way. As the fantasy elements start ramping up it will become harder to accurately depict them, but I don't think the showrunners will ever allow themselves to stray too far from the series, even if they wander off the road from time to time. This is not a True Blood situation here.

I don't know how much the Walking Dead did stray, but I'm pretty sure the advantage in knowledge that reading the books will diminish more and more, especially when the show will try to fix the chronology.

Re: George R.R. Martin's 'GAME OF THRONES'

Postby TheButcher on Fri May 05, 2017 6:59 am

'Game of Thrones': HBO Exploring Four Different Follow-Up Series
Four writers — as well as creator George R.R. Martin — are each working on unique takes.
Lesley Goldberg wrote:HBO, vastly aware that the end is near for juggernaut Game of Thrones, is looking to the franchise's future.

The premium cable network is teaming with four writers — as well as creator George R.R. Martin — to develop four different potential follow-up series, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Each of the four projects will explore different time periods of Martin's sprawling world of Westeros. It's unclear where any of the four fall in the show's universe — meaning they could be prequels, sequels or spinoffs.

The four takes are being written by Max Borenstein; Jane Goldman and Martin; Brian Helgeland; and Carly Wray and Martin. Of the four writers, none have any current ties to the HBO fantasy drama. Game of Thrones showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff are not currently attached to write on any of the four efforts. The duo, however, will serve as executive producers on any of the four takes that move forward. Martin will serve in the same capacity as well. Weiss and Benioff are finishing up the seventh season of Thrones — set to bow July 16 — and are in the midst of writing and preparing for the eighth and final season of the fantasy drama series. Both will continue to be kept in the loop in all things Thrones.

For now, the four projects are in the development stage. There is no timetable for any of them as HBO wants to get the follow-up to Thrones — its highest-rated and most valuable franchise in its history — right. The cabler will evaluate what they have when all the scripts are in and then make decisions.

For his part, HBO programming president Casey Bloys told THR in September that he would love to find a way to see the franchise continue. "There are so many properties and areas to go to," he said. "For us, it's about finding the right take with the right writer."

Max Borenstein

His credits include writing the screenplay for Kong: Skull Island and 2014's Godzilla. On the TV side, he was the showrunner and creator of Fox's short-lived Minority Report reboot, which marks his lone small-screen credit. Borenstein next is readying Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) and Godzilla vs. Kong (2020). He is repped by UTA.

Jane Goldman
Goldman's credits include writing the screenplay for Neil Gaiman's Stardust as well as adapting comic favorite Kick-Ass. Her geek cred includes X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Kingsman: The Secret Service and Kingsman: The Golden Circle. She is repped by WME.

Brian Helgeland
The feature scribe counts writing and directing Jackie Robinson biopic 42 as well as Tom Hardy vehicle Legend. He penned the story and screenplay for 2010's Robin Hood and wrote The Taking of Pelham 123. Helgeland is an Oscar winner for his adapted screenplay for L.A. Confidential and was nominated for an Academy Award in 2003 for adapting Mystic River. He is repped by CAA.

Carly Wray
Wray has the most extensive TV credits out of all four scribes and counts Mad Men, The Bastard Executioner and HBO's The Leftovers among them. She is repped by WME.

With Thrones' endgame in sight — the final two seasons will consist of a total of 15 episodes combined — the pressure is on HBO to deliver another breakout ongoing scripted drama. The cabler this season is saying farewell to critical darling The Leftovers, which is far from a broad breakout hit. On the drama side, HBO's programming roster includes the upcoming David Simon porn drama The Deuce and Marti Noxon's Sharp Objects as well as Westworld and the forthcoming Succession. The cabler is also readying another season of True Detective and mulling potential follow-up seasons of limited dramas The Night Of and Big Little Lies.

Keep track of all things Game of Thrones at THR.com/GameOfThrones.

bah! i KNEW he was going to say "no Robert's Rebellion" but i don't agree that we'll know everything there is to know about it by the time the show is over. maybe we'll know everything by the time the books are done being written, but that could still be decades away (i know, i'm an optimist). there's only 7 episodes this season, and probably 6 next season. 13 episodes, and supposedly on top of resolving all the present-day storylines, we're going to get every important bit of Robert's Rebellion revealed to us as well? i think not!

considering that there are only 14 episodes left to wrap up all these plot lines and character arcs I expect the remaining episodes are going to have more action and forward story motion than what we are used to.

good enough for a season premiere. i enjoyed the cold opening with "walder frey". dany's arrival at dragonstone was suitably gravitas-ious (yes i made up a new word for it). everything in between was the typical setup material for the season that we typically get in a GoT season premiere, which is fine, though with 3 fewer episodes to the season, i felt a little more impatient with it than usual.

Ed Sheeran pulled me out of it. I found his appearance disappointing.

Loved the Freys. I thought for sure that someone would question "Walder" for being so nice.

I'm really loving The Hound's journey throughout all of this.

Lady Mormont didn't age too much during the off-season, thankfully. An older version of her will still be a badass, but not as entirely effective.

Tormund and Brienne may never happen, but damn is it entertaining to watch him try!

I really like Jim Broadbent in this role. Now he just needs to be on Star Wars for a modern geek acting hat-trick!

I enjoyed the season premiere....I'm just glad it's done so that we can get on with the story in the remaining six episodes this season.

I found his appearance extremely unnecessary and awkward.

A strong opener for season 7.

I think they overdid it with all the shit shots at the Citadel.....but that is just my opinion, others may have enjoyed it and wanted more, who am I to judge

Euron Grejoy got his hair did and little overall makeover in the offseason, including a reduced overbite, and I think his scene with Cersi may have been the most interesting of the episode for me. his playfulness in regard to the Mountain as well as taking a shot at Jamie only having one hand was a kick. the way the scene ended makes me think the horn he possesses will be touble for Dany and her control over the dragons. I am guessing the "gift" he is referring to bringing back for Cersi is at least one of Dany's dragons.

they can redeem themselves by having Arya add him to her list and take him out in a particularly gruesome scene in the finale.
