How I Met Your Mother

The greatest TV in history is being made right now. The worst TV in history is being made right now.

How I Met Your Mother

Postby Fawst on Mon Dec 10, 2007 1:38 pm

I can't believe there isn't a thread for this!

GREATEST. SITCOM. EVAR.

Discuss.

Seriously, does anyone watch this? If not, add Season 1 to your Netflix queue, or just go buy it. It's one of the funniest shows I've ever watched, and gets me howling sometimes. For anyone that HAS seen it...

Slap Bet.

That is all.

I've seen a couple episodes here and there. I thought it was funny and would watch if it was on. However, I haven't sought it out.

This is easily one of my five favorite shows on TV. The writing, directing and acting are all top-notch, and I love the way it twists all of the traditional sitcom formulas into interesting new variations.

This show is LEGEN--wait for it!!

Along with The Office and Scrubs (which is really included more for nostalgia's sake than the show over the past 1.5 sseasons), How I Met Your Mother is my favorite sitcom-style comedy on TV. The writing and performances are great, and the cast has real chemistry. Plus Doogie Rulz.

"It's so obvious. She wouldn't make eye contact. That was shame. And the reason for it is that Robin used to do PORN - wait for it! - OGRAPHY."

"That hand is massive!" "Of course it is. You've seen my penis."

They get away with so much shit on that show. I love it because it's clever humor, mixed with brilliant direction and it doesn't shy away from the geek-factor. Plus every single chick on that show is HAWT, even the "I'm here for ten seconds so Barney can hit on me" girls.

I'm just glad I started watching it with two seasons worth of DVDs to enjoy :)

Barney rules.

I watch this show religiously.

Good acting, not great.
Good looking girls, but not drop dead gorgeous (sorry Hannigan fans).
Good stories, but certainly nothing to remember (most epidsodes revolve around someone getting laid).

Its like the evolution of Friends...

Funny you should mention that, they had a really good knock against Friends in one episode where they're hanging out in a coffee shop and someone make a comment along the lines of "Yeah, this really isn't that fun after all."

Very enjoyable sitcom... the only one I look forward to now a days. My fiance makes me watch the whole CBS Monday night line up, but HIMYM is by far the best.

One of the very few... actually maybe the only.. sitcom I really enjoy watching. Plus it's already had a handful of Buffy/Angel actors show up.

Alyson Hannigan
Alexis Denishof
Amy Acker
Harry Groener

Not sure if I'm missing anybody or not but still... neat. ^^

it had better be renewed. It and the Office are the only ongoing semi-traditional sitcoms I can stand (since Scrubs is ending).

I've heard 30 Rock is funny but haven't watched it much.

I know, I'm psyched! I saw almost all of the episodes aired so far from this season. Honestly, they're not nearly as strong as the first two seasons, but they're still better than the majority of sitcoms on the air now.

I love this show! I'm a fairly new fan. No one I know watches it, so I'm glad this thread is here.

That picture is hilarious, RogueScribner.

ETA: I am also a big Buffy fan, so I'm very happy to see Alyson Hannigan on such a great show. (Although, I miss Red). Cool that so many Buffy alums have made appearnces, including Tom Lenk's "don't sneeze or you'll miss it" appearance. Hope to see more Buffy alums on the near future, as well as some "Freaks and Geeks" alums.

I thought they were insane when they got Britney Spears to do an episode of this, but she looks good. I saw some pics of her from the episode the other day, and that girl looks like she went straight from her uber-hot teenage years, skipped over the kids, the K-Fed, and the drama, and went straight into her hot 20s.

Should be good, apparently her first line is "Can't we have sex, and THEN go shopping?" Interesting.

Is it just me or is anyone else 98% certain we met the future Mrs. Mosby this week?

CONJECTSPOILURES!

In that moment when Ted crosses the bar to see Barney, he bumps into a dark-haired woman (Nicole Muirbrook Wagner) and says, "Oh, sorry." She smiles back, says, "No problem," and continues on her way. He goes up to Barney and the wackiness resumes.

And that, my friends, is either one nasty red herring... or it's her.

We know she's in the bar that night and we know the show loves to revisit past events and/or show them from differing perspectives. Why else then would you include such a minor, unnecessary moment unless you're going to come back to it later on and show the "reverse" angle? The show loves to layer its mystery and to earn its continuity, and I think this is defining moment for them.

Not good enough for you? Consider it from a practical, production perspective (yay alliteration!). Extras get paid nothing while actors with (I believe) five lines or less get paid next to nothing. (We've all seen moments in other sitcoms when the lead is saying something funny to an extra and the extra just gives them a look back when dialogue would feel more natural--because they're not allowed to say anything.) So, logically, giving this woman a line of dialogue--and agreeing to pay the actress a higher scale--was a conscious decision. And there are only two reasons I see it could've been made: red herring or Mrs. Mosby.

Ultimately, the reason I'm so adamant about this being her is because it works and I really, really like it. It rewards viewers for an investment in the show and it's a ballsy way to introduce THE TITLE CHARACTER!!! Moreover, were I the showrunner, this is exactly what I would do.

Great episode. Great show.

My girlfriend said the same thing. My only rebuttal would be, at least her one line had a narrative purpose. It wasn't completely useless.

I could be totally wrong on this and it could be the perfect example of how Lostified our TV viewing has become (in a negative way--if there is such a thing)... but I still think this is it.

This show doesn't exist on the same plane as LOST as far as machevelian planning. The girl he bumped into is the future Mother, no doubt. Those red herring moments don't happen in sitcoms.

Like I said earlier (and was soundly ignored )... could it be more obvious?

Wow. Britney Spears did not annoy me in that episode. In fact, she wasn't too bad. I'm not saying she's gonna win an Emmy anytime soon, but at least I didn't hate her.

And did anyone else notice that the doctor mentioned that the last time she went out was on St. Patrick's Day? She said that she went to a party at a bar, but left early. I doubt that she's going to end up being the mother, but I enjoy that they dangled that possibility out there.

Yah, I haven't seen the St. Patrick's day episode yet (have 20 minutes of it on DVR), but when I heard her mention the party, my friends all perked up. Last night was a great episode. I'm not sure how good last week's was, but this week they went back to being as great as the first two seasons were. Case in point: the segue from the Doc laughing her ass off at Ted's moustache to Barney laughing his ass off at Ted was just perfect. Also, Barney's commercial bookend was well played, "I have to go to the bathroom." Commercials. "Ok, I'm back... so how's work, Robin?" "WHAT'S HER DARK SECRET?!" Freakin great.

And Britney... damn she looked good. Scary. Her best moment was probably when she chased Ted down the street, I thought that was great.

Ugh, I thought Britney was terrible. She delivered evey line like she was in a high school play--and a bad one at that. Everything about her performance was just so obvious. But other than her, it was a fantastic episode.

Something seemed familiar at the beginning of the episode, and that's when I remembered two episodes back...

Wikipedia synopsis for 'The Platinum Rule' wrote:Ted announces to the group that he is planning on taking out his tattoo removal doctor to a movie and is immediately met with disapproval. Barney mentions the Golden Rule. Although it is known commonly from the Bible as the ethic of reciprocity ("Do onto to others as they would do onto you."), Barney's take on it is "Love thy neighbor," which would lead into his Platinum Rule as "Never ever, ever, ever 'love' thy neighbor." His point was that one should never date someone seen on a regular basis, e.g. someone at the same workplace, a next door neighbor, etc. because such relationships never work out in the end and lead to never-ending suffering, as those involved would see each other constantly. Barney begins to outline the Platinum Rule in 8 steps as the group begins to recount on their past experiences against the Platinum Rule in attempt to persuade Ted not to go on his date (In the case of Marshall and Lily, being married to each other, they got too close to a neighboring couple).

...Ted had already mentioned Stella! And I remember thinking at the time that Stella is one hell of a character name to just lob out there; we'd be getting back to her. And we did!

I would gladly eat crow about the Bump Into Lady if it turned out Sarah Chalke was Mrs. Mosby. She just fits so naturally into the show, it's hard to picture a better match at this point. And it's clear now the writers are a) planting all sorts of red herrings to throw us off, and b) layering the shit out of the show to earn their Big Reveal.

F. Ing. Awesome.

MW, this show just fucking rules :)

I have to say, though... for a guy who can't find "the one," he has already found one that seemed to fit the bill perfectly (the baker), one that came damn close (Robin), and now one that seems to be very close as well (Stella). Not to mention all the hot chicks he's "dated" since his breakup with Robin.

Whatever, still love the show!

Yeah, to the show's credit they've done a nice job of showing how Ted finds Mrs. Almost Right a number of times, but he either fumbles it (like he did with Victoria, by being hung up on Robin) or there's a fundamental difference preventing happily ever after (e.g. Robin was perfect... except she didn't want kids). Instead of having Ted date a series of caricatures (which works on something like, say, Seinfeld), I like that they take a more realistic, nuanced approach. Sure, they go to wacky sitcom places, but you always understand what Ted could see in the girls he's dating.

I really liked this past ep, but I don't know how realistic that 2 minute date was. :-P

Britney Spears will appear in this show as a loopy love starved receptionist. She's trying to make a slow and professional comeback... who would have thought.

There are also Youtube clips but you all can look that up....

Um, I'm pretty sure that already happened, unless my TV sees into the future . . .

I remember watching the movie "CrossRoads".

I guess I was curious, more than anything to see if Britney had any acting ability. No surprise there. <insert green puke smiley>

So I guess I'm not too surprised to see that her guest spot on the show wasn't that memorable.

So they finally busted out the *SPOILER IF YOU DIDN'T WATCH LAST NIGHT* Doogie Howser ending for Barney. Awesome.

Caught up on the last few episodes last night... I didn't think Brittany was too bad, but if she's on more episodes I'm gonna be pissed. Loved the fact that Barney nailed her (but then again, who doesn't he nail?).

As an aside, now that Ted and Robin are no longer a thing, we are seeing a lot less of her in these new episodes. And I couldn't be happier. She has consistently been my least favorite of the group.
