Shark Week

The greatest TV in history is being made right now. The worst TV in history is being made right now.

Shark Week

Postby sharkshock on Tue Jul 22, 2008 8:09 pm

It's coming... the week JAWS fans (so that's about everyone here) have been waiting for the whole year: Shark Week!

It starts this Sunday, the 27th, at 9pm with a new Mythbusters special. Other new specials that are going to air are Surviving Sharks (with Les Stroud aka Survivorman), Dirty Jobs: Greenland Shark Quest, How Not To Become Shark Bait, Mysteries of the Shark Coast, and Day of the Shark.

The website is http://www.sharkweek.com

I'm actually working with Discovery (they're awesome) and have more info/details/pics to share, but I figured I should get the ball rolling before that by getting you guys to talk about it first. I know I can't be the only one here who's hyped about it.

I like the new avatar, TheBaxter... and nice Hitchhiker's reference, papalazeru. I'm not sure about the plants (so is it seaweed?) reference.

Anyway, here are some pics to give a hint of what Shark Week '08 will cover:

Mythbusters figure out some shark-related myths. They've also created a 16-foot long robo-shark (JAWS, anyone? 8-) ). It's on Sunday at 9pm.
Image

Surviving Sharks with Les Stroud (Survivorman) will teach us how to best play it safe in the water. This could really come in handy if you're terrified of sharks but like to go in the ocean. It's on Monday at 9pm.
Image

Dirty Jobs: Greenland Shark Quest will be about Mike Rowe's trip to the Arctic where he catches up with scientists who track the massive Greenland sharks in freezing cold conditions. They're checking out how the rapid ecological changes are affecting them and how it trickles down the food chain. It's on Tuesday at 9pm.
Image

Mysteries of the Shark Coast will take a look at a special team of marine biologists, scientists and adventurers who are trying to figure out why shark populations are mysteriously declining... they go on the largest shark tagging expedition in Australian history and give us a real good look (via Crittercams!) at the largely secretive life of sharks. It's on next Thursday, the 31st, at 9pm.
Image

I'll post some more info and pictures later. Let me know if you have any questions. Shark Week <3

Will the "MythBusters" shark episode cover Bat Shark Repellent Spray, and whether or not it actually repels bat sharks?

Unfortunately they will not be covering Bat Shark Repellent Sprays... or Shark Repellent Bat Sprays for that matter. They will be testing the Chili Powder Repellent (Spray?) myth though. I don't recall ever hearing of the myth, but apparently dogs might attract sharks... to test that one out the Mythbusters created Robo-Dog:

Funny how it's so true, and if you said the same thing about Julie Newmar some could say it's true too. Not in the whole lifeless, 'ocean turns red' sort of way, but still.

I hope, if there ever is a sequel to Eagle Eye, that it's called Shark Eye.

On Tuesday, the 29th, at 10 p.m. (right after the Dirty Jobs special) there's going to be another new special called How Not To Become Shark Bait. In that special experts travel to the Bahamas to test various attraction theories on different kinds of sharks. If you want to avoid them altogether, that show should come in handy. The Surviving Sharks special with Les Stroud the night before at 9 p.m. might sound similar, but it's more about what to do when actually in a shark encounter. Besides, you know, freak out.

Did anyone catch the new Mythbusters special last night? I thought it was pretty good, although I do think the JAWS special of theirs was better (naturally).

A reminder, tonight's new specials are Dirty Jobs: Greenland Shark Quest @ 9 p.m. and How Not To Become Shark Bait @ 10 p.m.

I would have gotten away for it if it weren't for those lousy Canadians. :x

Speaking of lines from mysteries, tonight at 9 p.m. is the premiere of Mysteries of the Shark Coast. (Unless you're in Canada. Then it's airing on Friday, August 1st at 8 p.m. ET/9 p.m. PT.) In this special scientists look to figure out what's happening to all the sharks along Australia's northeastern coast... they're disappearing. With the main predators of the ocean gone, the ocean food chain can get out of balance... so it's kind of a big deal. I'll share some images of the special soon.

Chris beat me to it, but here's what I've got anyway. :)

That must have been as painful as getting bitten by a shark (and not in the Ryan Seacrest kind of way).

That is crazy it happened in Canada too! Recently Mike Rowe went there (on the northeast side of Baffin Island) to learn more about the Greenland sharks. That Dirty Jobs special premiered on Tuesday, but it will be airing again tomorrow at 9 p.m. in case you missed it.

The new Mythbusters shark special is airing again on Saturday, August 2nd, at 6 p.m. Some more behind the scenes pics of Kari and the gang can be found here in Pop Critics' article about it.

You can also watch the Mythbusters team watch the new Mythbusters Shark Week special here. It's pretty funny.

Missed you guys too :D Hey - so how was everyone's Shark Week?! I think the Mythbusters episode was my personal favorite (oh who am I kidding, the whole week was my favorite), but a memorable moment for me was when they blew up the air tank haha… I’m excited to see new episodes from those two – Wednesdays at 9 PM if you’re watching with me. It looks like they’re going to be blowing up steak and pushing the limits of angry drivers. Funny because just recently I was talking to some friends about the science of road rage, so it'll be interesting to see how it turns out...
