Especially considering if Kirks has a favourite species of shark, it's definitely going to be one called "Megamouth."

Too true.

Actually, I don't think this story is quite as bad as it seems. These are a small boat community aren't they? So one shark to feed hungry village mouths wouldn't be so bad. Yes it's endangered but it wasn't caught by trawling and not likely to happen again. Megamouths are quite rare.

Kirks is the true fountain of knowledge on this so lets see what he has to say.

I am prepared to learn fascinating facts about sharks. Did you know they can play drums and imitate Curly Howard?

Looks like they are going with the scary/man-eating shark week this year. The promos i saw yesterday went something like this: man or woman is swimming/playing in the ocean, smiles at the camera (like its a home video), then a split second later they are gone. Up comes the Shark Week logo, and its dripping on blood and all chewed up.

one I just watched was just about shark attack victims and their stories. the one that's on now is about sharks in the med. how there are great white sharks there, too. attacks near malta and sicily and tunisia.

Yes, they are. I turned to it last night and they showed some dude jumping out of a helicopter (without a cage) into a swarm of sharks. Cue eerie music and Steve Irwin style dialogue.

NO THANKS!

Somehow I think Rob Stewart would be rolling his eyes at this.

I watched about 5 minutes of one of the programs last night because it was hosted by Lee Stroud, the Survivorman (love that show). It sucked. And here's why: all the stories that are told regarding shark attacks are not documented with video, only word of mouth. So EVERYTHING needs to be "re-enacted", and it always comes across (to me) as silly.

I agree. I hates the shark attack survivor stories. BORING.

I just want to see new footage of sharks. Are they not doing research? I mean, no one knows anything about Great Whites mating behavior. Come on! Scientists! Go out there and learn stuffs and document it and show us!

Yup. There's a reason why I grew up watching Jacques Cousteau, Mutual of Omaha and National Geographic...and liked it. It was science, facts were presented. We were enlightened not made to be scared. Sure the food chain can be scary, but hey, we all need to eat.

where is Kirks, he should be incensed!!

Tho, anyone who bought into the Megalodon "documentary" was being a little silly.

I like 50 foot sharks as much as the next guy (from a distance), but it seems kinda skeevy putting this on Discovery Channel.

it's kind of the way ALL of these cable channels have gone. TLC (where the only things you can "learn" about anymore are why someone is addicted to eating paste or what Honey Boo Boo likes to eat for breakfast), Discovery (where you can "discover" naked reality show contestants and amish mafia dons), Animal Planet (whose animals include Bigfoot and mermaids), Travel Channel (where you can travel to all kinds of haunted houses and alien landing spots), MTV (which last played an actual music video approximately sometime in 2003) and so on. watching cable tv these days is like going to a waste treatment facility so you can see which load of crap comes down the pipe next.

it is a business model issue, cheap "reality" based programming is cheaper than well researched, credible shows

i suppose the fact that these types of shows generate better ratings, and hence more advertiser revenue, is a poor reflection on the viewing public.

I'm not sure cheap is the driving factor. Its "entertainment" that drives these kinds of shows. The fact that they can use cheaply made CGI graphics is a bonus.

And its pretty sickening to me that shows like this are on channels that claim to educate.

back in the 90's they used to be good, with programming that reflected their names accurately. TLC and Discovery both

We need to put a cow and a shark into a steel cage and let them fight it out. Whoever manages to get out is the most fearsome!
