Defying Gravity (New space series)

Postby papalazeru on Tue Aug 04, 2009 7:31 am

IMDB wrote:In the near future, eight astronauts from five countries (four women and four men) undertake a mysterious six-year international space mission covering thirteen billion kilometres. With the eyes of the world upon them - everything they do is monitored, and every emotion they feel, scrutinized - they soon discover that their real assignment is not at all what they thought.

Anyone else watching this?

Good first episode opening, looks like it's quite enjoyable - and it's Ron Livingston, of Office Space fame.

Now quite sure as of yet what the long story is but it certainly laid out a nice exposition for a space series set not to far in the future.

I saw that. I'd seen the first ep by that point.

Just watched the second one. It's not bad although I am hoping it gets alot better and the it isn't just Greys Anatomy in space. There's a tiny supernatural element in the big story arch so I'm hoping that continues.

It's not bad so far, and yes there's a lot of 'human interest' stories but it seems to be working so far. I'll give it another 2 eps then if it does have a sci fi heart I'll continue watching

To be fair, it wasn't reviews that described it as "Grey's Anatomy in space" but rather the show was pitched to networks on that basis.

I assume shows get pitched as all sorts of things, just to get them the network interested and the show made.

I seem to think JMS pitched Babylon5 as "Hill Street Blues in space"....and look how that turned out.

True. If this ends up being something more than a romance/love triangle in space ill watch.

Effects are more than decent (animation counted in), acting and narrator is pretty good,
story is nice, there is a supernatural element involved in bigger story (seasons big, not episodes big),
and it just looks like decent part of TV.

I saw first 2 eps, although it was supposed to be 2hrs pilot it was apparently cut into 2 episodes.

There are few "giltches" but nothing important, and I like how they "explained" gravity in space by adding magnetic strings
to clothes and shit that pulls them down and saves them money :]

All in all 8/10 for first 2 eps

Yeah, I've seen the second hour too now.

Apart from a few odd science-over-art decisions, it does seem to work quite well.

A six year mission through the solar system is exciting enough, but this also does have some decent characters whose petty problems and situations might wear thin if it weren't for this mysterious presence/entity/pod person which appears to be a controlling influence on everyone.

The mission controllers seem to be acting on "faith" a lot, which I assume is down to them being manipulated by the pod person.

Note: the presence of both rotator arms on the spacecraft AND those nanotech anti-gravity suits doesn't quite make sense.

It makes sense if you think that rotator arms arent used for artificial gravity :)

Also, I think that they also wanted to tell them that they're not returning home once they reach destination 7

The bosses also kept saying "we were going to tell them on day 37" or something like that.

I figured it would be "There's a mysterious alien pod on board". But perhaps you're right and it's not a grand tour of the solar system.

Just seen the third ep.

There's a lot of complication with the 'love interests' in the story but it's still an entertaining story. I like the fact that the Sci-fi mystery element is being brought to the front.

Still, the CGI is fantastic and so are the sets. Very enjoyable.

If it ends up another smallville though, I'll slash my wrists before I finish the first series.

After seven episodes, I think the plot is still advancing well in this.

I'm always up for some good sci fi... the previews for this left me hesitant but I could tell there were some interesting moments. Maybe it's time to give the show a shot!

ABC stopped showing it with episode 8.

CTV showed episode 9, but apparently won't continue.

...leaving four episodes unaired. Hopefully the BBC will show the whole lot.

I saw it through to the last episode. It was a shame it got cancelled.

And it seems his version of events about ABC might be true, what with ABC's current attitude to the new series of V (although V is guff I wouldn't care if it got cancelled).

Caught the last episode of this, titled Kiss, and am very disappointed that the series is dead.
Lots of potential wasted. Frak.

I remember catching an episode of this. Was good. Like Lost in space.

Not like the TV show Lost In Space, but the TV show Lost... in space.
