This Thread Is Not THE EVENT (Or Is It??)

i watched the The Event pilot last night, and i'm exhausted.
it was like 24, because it had secret service agents and a black president and shady gov't officials.
it was like Lost because it had a jet airplane.
and it was like the X-Files because it had a secret arctic base holding alien prisoners. or human prisoners who know about aliens. or maybe it was more like Fringe because they're not aliens but people from another dimension. or maybe it's like Heroes and they're really people who got their superpowers from an eclipse. either way, it's like at least one of those shows.
it wasn't like Battlestar Galactica at all, though.

overall, this is another one of those shows that time will tell whether the premise will turn out to be interesting enough to sustain an entire show, or if it will fizzle out like Flashforward. i kinda feel like the latter is more likely, but the pilot is already more interesting than that show ever was, so i'll stick with it. but like FF, i have a hard time seeing how this can maintain an entire series for more than a single season. they'll HAVE to reveal whatever this "event" is by the end of the season, and then after that, what? it really makes me long for the days when networks actually made mini-series, because these high-concept shows are really more suited for that format. oh well. the pilot was interesting enough (if a bit ADD in it's execution), and it had a pretty decent WTF moment at the end, so i'll keep watching. for now.

Wasn't "The Event" a movie by M. Knight Shyamalan? Oh yea...

Personally, I'm looking forward to ´╝╗big voice] "The Occurrence" [/bigvoice]

Occurring, presumably, near you, um, sometime.

[spooky voice] maybe...[/spooky voice]

Enough already studios...you can't replicate a show like LOST. Literally impossible to generate that kind of FRESH NEW premise and buzz. Every attempt at a similar themed show will fail miserably.

Move on... or resurrect some of your old formulaic ideas. Here's one: based on the (unnatural) success of Glee perhaps a redo of CopRock is in order.

I was mildly entertained.
I found the flashback device to be irritating and hope they don't keep it up.
Dialogue discussing "the event" was pretty stilted. If everyone at the discussion knew what it was, they'd just say what it was and not say "the event" all the time.
None of the reveals were particularly surprising, except maybe for the identity of the guy in the cockpit, but I thought that was a bit trite.
And how did our hero get on the plane without his passport, or, presumably any credit cards or anything since they were all in his (nonexistant) hotel room. Also, the ring went into the safe. I thought that would play a key role in the episode, but...nothing!

My assumption is that the "event" is the show itself - "The network has a new series coming out, and it's so amazing it's going to be an event! In fact, that's what we've decided to call the show - The Event!"

There probably won't be an event of any note in the plot of the show.

This strategy has already worked - everyone is talking about The Event and will watch every episode, hoping to see an Event, so ratings will be very high even if the show is about people sleeping.

I'm not going to bother watching. I already feel like I'm being manipulated, and all I've seen are the commercials.

what's funny is, i have begun rewatching Lost from the beginning just this past weekend. so i can't help comparing the two. and while it was always the "mystery" aspect of Lost that appealed to me most, you really do need interesting characters that you sympathize with and relate to as well to keep your interest up. while it's too early to judge after just a single hourlong episode, it could be a bad sign that i could not be able to tell you the name of a single character from this show. maybe as the episodes continue they'll slow down a bit and flesh out the characters as well.

despite the hatred of the TBers, i'm still mildly intrigued by this show. i agree the flashback device is annoying though.
i finally figured out that the actor who plays the kid who's running around looking for his kidnapped girlfriend is john ritter's son.

This thread is just a tribute.

The second episode kept me interested. I'm not as bugfuck nuts as 'ol Gimpy is for the show, though. The flashbacks were much less annoying this week, although I wish the show would get to a point where they could just tell the story without using the flashback gimmick.

I've seen both episodes that aired and the show has a lot of problems.

Unlike Flashforward, The Event was over all rather dull from the pilot. Flashforward had at least shown a modicum of promise early on...

None of the characters are appealing, none of the actors are very charismatic or have much presence. Everyone looks so generic and the performances are totally unconvincing. That this show is riding the coat tails of two recent failures Flashforward and V does not bode well... it's like the producers are just going down the list of sci-fi-type of shows, green-lighting them one at a time hoping that one of them will stick soon.

The flashbacks are completely nonsensical, it's clear that no thought whatsoever was put into their use: they are not very helpful, they are distracting, and they are impossible to follow... contrasting to the Lost flashback, which were used to gradually reveal the characters without regard for any timeline, in The Event flashbacks are constantly moving around from "5 years ago" to "2 minutes ago" to "12 days ago" to "4 months ago," as if the timeline is important. Good luck remembering the chronology.

Pacinowned. Agreed completely.

The writers' mantra seems to be "PLOT, PLOT, PLOT!", without understanding that A) viewers need to care about the characters before they can invest in what happens to them and B) the plot needs to be... you know... interesting.

I can't shake this feeling when I'm watching The Event that I'm actually watching a remake of a good show and the producers of the new version have no clue what made the original so good.

Call it Prisoner-itis.

I've watched the first two episodes, and have the third downloaded.

I can't say I'm that impressed and can see why NBC originally turned the show down (before they realised they had an empty slot and nothing else to fill it with).

We've seen it all before really. And people who claim "oh but they aren't holding anything back, the mysteries get explained as we going along" are idiots....or are fans of Dan Brown novels.

Not much of a thread really... just a bunch of (sorta) jokes. Doesn't seem like The Event caught on here in the Zone.

It's pretty terrible and now formulaic. Start with a terrible event that bares close resemblance to a terrorist attack (Lost, Flash Forward), add some high up officials that have been infiltrated by supposed bad guys (24, Flash forward), the bad guys happen to be Aliens but some might be good (V), thrown together with some flashbacks (Lost, Flash forward), they also try to do the clever Breaking bad thing of showing a dramatic point in the episode before cutting back to what happened before...now here's the twist. It's shit!!!

That's right, it could be a Shamalama-rama-dama-ding dong story only with corporate focus groups and viewing habits of the general public in charge.

That's a double edged sword. It either means that we've seen enough good TV to recognise bad shows when made, or that we've watched so many TV shows that the ideas are no longer new :)

Then how do you explain the popularity of Glee? It falls into both those categories.

Quite simply...It's full of hot chics...and there's a lesbain kiss...and they dress up like school girls....

What's not to explain?

It's like a trasitional show when you're trying to get your girlfriend to watch porn.

so, is anyone still watching this show besides me?

it's still pretty dumb and confusing, but it's gotten better. the disjointed jumping through time/flashbacks are gone, we've had more "answers" then in the whole 6 seasons of lost, and there's also a crazy hot assassin chick. and for some reason, hal holbrook is in this too. i'm still not sure whether we've seen the event, or if the event is something that happened in the past, or is going to happen in the future, or why hal holbrook is in this and who his character is, but overall it's pretty dumb fun. kinda dumb and fun in the way heroes sometimes was before it became all dumb and no fun, and much less of a cocktease than heroes was when it came to showing stuff.
