Seriously, what was up with "The Jay Pharoah Show" on SNL?

I've long dreaded every time Jay Pharoah comes onto the SNL stage to do one of three impressions he seems only to know (will smith/denzel washington/chris rock), so I was pretty shocked when on came a sketch that seems to basically just make fun of the fact that all he ever does is a handful of impressions.

I guess they must have been going for something meta with this sketch, but I still don't get it. It's like when Charlie Sheen started trying to pretend he was in on the joke of how lame he was. Daniel Radcliffe's awkward reactions to the impressions actually feel sincere.

I won't even get into the other half of the sketch, which was a straight Between-Two-Ferns-I-don't-know-who-my-guest-is rip-off ... but I have to believe there's some kind of story behind this sketch ... just straight weird

My guess is that they're padding out the show. They didn't have enough material to fill the time, so they trot out this thin, lame concept and let it run a few minutes, and the producers are happy.
