Regarding the almighty Affleck

Postby Crayotic Rockwell on Fri Dec 09, 2005 10:01 pm

Is it just me or is his Ben Affleck persona more interesting than any of the characters he winds up playing onscreen?

I know he gets a fair bit of shit, but in all the interviews, commentaries, and other candid media I've seen/heard of him he's got that whole Vince Vaughn'esque Likeable Grinning Asshole (tm) aire to him, whereas in most movies he plays Likeable Piece Of Cardboard (tm) (Goodwill Hunting being an exception off the top of my head). It don't seem logical.

If John Woo let Affleck run adlibs throughout PAYCHECK it could have pulled 400 million at the boxoffice!

Something for all of us to think about, I think.

That's why when he broke down in his car with JLo he was going up to every car in the street and saying, "Please help us, we're celebrities."

Something along those lines anyway. I remember reading an article about this a couple of years ago.

Anyway, most stars try not to act like stars these days. I'm not buying any of it.

All his life, Ben Affleck has been looking up to the stars wishing he was Fred.

His whole career of treading the boards has been based on recieving the Freddie Prinze Jr Lifetime Achievment Award For Outstanding Carboardness Contribution To Film.

I was gonna say more, but a sudden memory of my hairdresser in New Zealand who I fancied but didn't return the favour, has made me weak with heartbreak and unable to write further.

I'm sure Affleck is a fine human being, kind to animals, a good husband and father.

However, his aura emits Douchebag.

This being said, I feel that if he was allowed to be more of a douche in films ala Dazed and Confused, and Mallrats, his acting stock would rise.

We all came to love Chris Walken because he was an evil creepy fuck in his films.

We all stood up for Oldman because he cornered the market on deranged edgy psychos.

I feel that if Affleck were allowed to let his douchebag flag fly, instead of playing the everyman we are supposed to like, then as lovers of film, we will grow to appreciate him more.

He's not so bad. Not at all. I really liked Chasing Amy and I thought he was really good in that. I think he's a solid actor that happens to be easy to rail on. Everyone points him out as a negative when it really isn't.

He's alright. He was fairly decent in "Changing Lanes" with Samuel L. Jackson. Now Samuel L, that's an actor I'd go see at the box office - Ben most likely not. I just find his acting so so and he just always appears bland on the big screen.

slumber party69 wrote:Once, it seemed the world was at his feet. He and his best friend Matt Damon wrote and starred in Good Will Hunting. Their reward was a Best Screenplay Oscar and a passport to an A-list acting career in Hollywood.

Damon's reputation took off, but Affleck had a knack of picking dud flicks; Pearl Harbor, Armageddon and Daredevil are on his CV.

But the real opprobrium began when the actor started dating Jennifer Lopez, and people chose to forget that Affleck had shown his acting qualities in several films by Kevin Smith, Shakespeare in Love and Richard Linklater's teen classic Dazed and Confused.

The adventures of "Bennifer" were a staple in the media.

The couple even insisted on acting together - the resulting film, Gigli, was panned and quickly gained a reputation as one of the worst films in history.

When their relationship hit the rocks, Smith even thought it prudent to cut scenes of the couple getting married from his ill-received comedy Jersey Girl.

It seemed that everything Affleck touched turned into box-office poison.

But i like to think he has bounce back thanks to gone baby gone?.

Affleck get way too much shit.

The man is a good actor. Hell, apparently he's even a decent director.

And as it was stated in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back

"you do the paycheck movie, then you do the artsy movie, then you do the movie to pay back the guy who helped you get your start"

or something like that.

For quite a while Ben Affleck was emitting high energy waves in the smug bastard frequency range.

He seemed to be in lots of high budget, low quality films but failed to balance things out with some appearances in films with a stronger integrity....so people got sick of him.

I mean Matt Damon was able to a Farrelly Brother flick, a Eurotrip cameo, three dire Ocean movies and still came out unscathed. Because he maintained a balance in the movie force - Brother Grimm, Syriana, Bourne, Good Shepherd, The Departed etc etc.

Afflect almost got there with Hollywoodland, except it seems hardly anyone saw it.

I think Affleck is best at light comedy and light drama. Certainly not a heavy hitter in either genre. Personally he seems like an ass, but as others have said, when he's pushed into a serious discussion his smarts and sophistication show.

Shouldn't the funny bit be where the studio chiefs chuckle and hand the script to William Goldman for a complete but uncredited rewrite?

I agree. I read a review of Daredevil once (I forget who the reviewer was) and it said (I'm paraphrasing): "Daredevil is supposed to be a character who seethes with inner torment, and there isn't an actor in Hollywood who seethes with inner torment less than Ben Affleck."

I think that's on the money. The guy comes across as someone who doesn't have much going on emotionally in real life, so he's got very little to draw on in his performances.

see, this is a great example of perspective, because i strongly disagree there. i think he comes across very real and genuine.
