Three things T JAY

1. Is there a reason this is in coaxial instead of say movie reviews where we could possibly discuss all of winstones previous efforts?

2. Is the caps lock stuck on your keyboard or something (seriously not cool dude)

3. Welcome to the Zone.

Most people here aren't old enough to know who he was going on about, I saved people the time from doing a search.

There was a spell not so long ago in the UK where we all decided he was fantastic...immediately following Nil By Mouth in fact. He then followed that up with another role as a child abusing Dad...but that name escapes me. They were both hard roles for him - Nil By Mouth was pretty much Gary Oldman's autobiography and Winstone himself is a Father. So he got lots of plaudits for those roles and rightly so.

But let me just moot this point as well - he doesn't half do some diabolical bollocks as well. Sometimes he carries it off, especially if you are a Brit. "Face" was ok but predictable....and his turn in Sexy Beast was knowingly hilarious (Best dialogue to Kingsley though - "No? NO? Not fucking No, fucking Yes Gal").

Anyone see his made for TV study of Henry VIII...that well-known cockney King of ours? Never knew before then that Anne was actually pronounced A-hh-nne.

I always thought both Mr Winstone and the producers of EASTENDERS missed a trick following MacKellen on Corrie a few months back....

And for the global community, two words for you:

"King Arthur". Prosecution rests m'lud.

Yeah he was fantastic in Tim Roths The War Zone a film not very well seen which isn't very suprising considering the subject matter, Tilda Swinton was also great, still it's certainly not for everyone, a rental not a purchase IMO.

He's superb as Gal in Sexy Beast, that movie has some of Winstone's best physical acting to date, IMO. Yes, Kingsley overshadows him - but Kingsley's character only works because he can bounce off Winstone.

PS - Doc Holliday. I think you may be paraphrasing somewhat. I know the dialogue of Sexy Beast off by heart, and the closest thing Kingsley says to your quotation is this-

Dove: I'm sorry, Don, but I'm gonna have to turn this opportunity down.

Logan: No, you're gonna have to turn this opportunity "yes"

OR

Dove: No, Don
Logan: Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes!!!!

you are right of course - what you read was the "Chinese Whispers" version of the following extract...as bastardised by my brother and I since 2000:

Gal: No!
Don: Yes!
Gal: No!
Don: Yes!
Gal: No!
Don: studly gentleman!
Gal: No, No, No!
Don: Yes, Yes, Yes!

Hope that helps ya.

Ah. Bloody IMDB. That quotation is also wrong! I'm revealing myself as a totally anal nerd here, but the exchange goes like this:

Gal: No Don!
Don: Yes!
Gal: No!
Don: studly gentleman
Gal: Don, don't do this.
Don: This? This what? What am I doing?

The only time he says "yes, yes, yes" is when they're arguing in the kitchen.

I once met Ray (along with Damon Albarn) when I was an extra in the movie FACE. This automatically makes it his best movie...and therefore one of the best movies of all time.

Right after Sexy Beast I saw Love, Honor & Obey which played like Sopranos UK. Ray is a lot like the Wiseguys Paul Sorvino in that one. I wanted to pick it up after but never have. Those are all I've seen him in.

It's a good film actually, I thought it looked like shit at the time but my mate convinced me to watch, I had a blast, very dark in places.

Any fans of BBC2 improv Comedy "Operation Good Guys" should give it a watch too, they all steal the show.

I actually care about this. I would love to know all of the script to Sexy Beast off by heart.

Plus I was in the film as an Extra toooooooooooo!!!!!! Sitting right by my old mate Ben and Ray in a chinese restaurant - on another table I might add. And Oh yeah, I know my scene was cut, so there's no proof that I'm not talking bullshit, but I was there, part of Histooreeeeyyyyy!!!!!

I still haven't seen all that many roles of Ray Winstone. I'm so close to saying that his performance in Nil By Mouth was groundbreaking, incredible blah blah, but the truth is, is that I think this geezer (though I'm sure he's just as much a nice bloke as this) can be quite a bit of this monstrous character in real life. Which would make his role a little less revelationary for him. Plus, has he done similar work in other roles? He's normally your East London hard gentleman kind of chracter isn't he?

If you are a fan of Ray Winstone you must see the Australian movie he stars in called "The Propositon" - his turn in this movie should be lauded - he should win awards and bask in glory for his work in this film, I'm serious

also, his work as Mr. Beaver in The Chronic- WHAT? -cles of Narnia with Dawn French is also pretty good

I watched a movie from 1981 called Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains... the other day, which co-stars a very, VERY young Ray Winstone. He was 23 years old at the time; it was freaking me out!

Anyway the movie itself was pretty good and Winstone's performance as an illiterate punk rocker was electric. Definitely recommended if you're a fan of the man's work (even though he was practically a boy... *shudder*...)

I'll have to track that one down!

Have you seen "Scum" yet Ribbons? It's a really harsh, ultra realist look at the youth penal system in UK, its set in the 70's and boy Winstone is great, and, if you can take it, it is one of the best prison movies, in fact one of the best movies ever made.
