I Know Your Face...

Postby Doc Holliday on Tue Mar 21, 2006 3:33 pm

I've looked for a similar thread but can't find one so here goes : I mentioned on another thread a morning last week when I saw first an early Terry O'Quinn in the X-Files movie...and an hour later Josh Holloway as Staked Vamp #3 in the first episode of Angel Season One.

Then, yesterday I rewatched DEATHWISH and remembered that it featured not only a VERY young Jeff Goldblum - but an equally young (sir) Christopher Guest.

Now I really get a kick out of this sort of thing - half of me just because of that latent Trainspotter gene I have....but the other half because I do genuinely find it interesting to compare performances with those of their more established and therefore arguably less pressured years. OK - they are only as good as their last performance - I don't mean they are all coasting it now - but Holloway seemed v nervous - I wouldn't be surprised if that was his first acting gig of any real note. Whereas O'Quinn - having made a bunch of stuff even before X-files was more measured yet disappointingly very similar to that of his more famous creation. Right down to sitting still holiding his head in hands. All that was missing was wreckage and a beach. Depp in Nightmare on Elm Street struck me as an accomplished actor straight away - but one of my buddies vehemently disagrees with me on this.

So - go to IMDB if you must, if you are that desperate to post - but rather this thread is here for those random "spottings" and any observations along the way about their acting and how it compared....less so for "Did you know so and so first appeared in...."

Jean Claude VanDamme was in the classic 80s movie Breakin'... the scene is two breakdancers facing off on the boardwalk, with a crowd around them clapping and dancing along. smack dab in the middle is VanDamme shaking his ass!

Marilyn Monroe in 'All About Eve' immediately springs to mind. Next to Bette Davis and George Sanders, she equipped herself pretty well actually.

And, of course, she looked absolutely gorgeous.

Noticed while watching series two of The X-Files recently that Terry O'Quinn had a guest role in an episode. Way before the movie.

The bad cops in 'Magnum Force' were a cavalcade of future third-tier guys...Robert Urich, David Soul and Tim Matheson...the fourth guy never did much, but that's not a bad grouping of up and comers for the time...Dan Tanna and Hutch in the same lineup is none too shabby.

Counselor Troi from Star Trek:TNG was in Death Wish 3. She was attacked by the evil gang..

Sam Rockwell was in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie. He was part of the foot clan.. He's in that scene after Casey Jones hits Shredder's henchman (the bald guy) with a golf club.

Viggo Mortensen is the younger brother of Rachel's suitor, Daniel Hochleitner in "Witness." I think he has one line, but he's in most of the scenes. He was only supposed to be in one, perhaps the barn raising, but they liked him so much they had him stick around for the whole film. It's considered his screen debut, but it's really the only film he hadn't been cut out of up till then. Signs of later Aragorn greatness? I can't really say, but he is rather striking, like he might be somebody, someday.

Ioan Gruffudd, aka Mr. Fantastic, is the only ship's officer in "Titanic" who goes back for survivors and picks up Rose. "Is anyone alive out there??" It's one of the only movies you hear his Welsh accent.

No way! Damn...does that mean I have to see the movie again? I guess so :? I'm pretty sure thats a bit of boy-o I detect in Fantastic Four AND King Arthur though. Did you ever get his TV debut - the shortlived Horatio Hornblower series?

Definition of Star Appeal - launching your career with a character called Horatio Hornblower and STILL making it to leading man status just a few years later.

Kudos Ioan, kudos indeed.....

Ioan absolutely rocked H. Hornblower, despite all the sexual innuendo that could be gleaned from a name like Hornblower.

Well worth your eye-time.

They seem like so long ago now - what was it - the late nineties they came out? R Lindsay was cool too in that series - and you remind me Vic....the guy with the Tam O Shanter in the Sharpe series (was it Paddy?) - he was the aggressive drunk in Withnail & I (Whats your name - MacFuck?).

And Danny from the same film went on to be the King of Roadies in Waynes World 2 and also one of the pilots in Phantom Menace. Ralph Brown was his name....

Here's a real one... Arnold Schwarzenegger was in Robert Altman's The Long Goodbye. It wasn't a speaking role, and he's really weird in that one. I remember one scene, his boss asks him to remove his shirt, totally random, and he does. I was like WTF OMG LOL.

I did, that's where I first saw him. I LOVED that series and Ioan was perfect as Hornblower. I own them...time to dig them out for a viewing.
Incidentally, it also has Battlestar Galactica's Jamie Bamber, as Archie Kennedy, who was supposed to die, but was so popular they brought him back.

Incidentally, my sister was a huge fan of Jamie Bamber from Hornblower and built a fan website. He sent her a handwritten letter and sent her a signed picture of himself from Hornblower that he'd clearly printed from a cheap laser printer. He was such a nobody he didn't even have his own glossy photos. He was very flattered and touched. And now look at him--couldn't happen to a nicer guy, I think.

I have a signed picture of Ioan from the same time, and a letter from his mom. I wonder if she still answers his fan mail?

Goran Visnjic is the poor Croatian soldier who asks to search the truck hiding the nuke in "The Peacekeeper." And then they shoot him.

It's funny mostly because there he is, glorified extra in a lousy Clooney film and then he went on to replace George Clooney on ER. (And was Nicole Kidman's evil boyfriend in "Practical Magic." He's his own Kevin Bacon connection.)

I was watching Mitchum as Marlow in Farewell My Lovely a little while ago, when out of the blue a young Stallone pops up in a trio of dastardly henchmen and clobbers Mitchum him into a car.

Sly then goes on to annoy his big studly whorehouse mamma boss, by eyeing up her daughter, only then to completely ignore her, and get caught in bed with his big pre rocky paws all over her. If I remember rightly big studly whorehouse momma gets shot in the belly by him too.

He does all this without saying a word.

Al
"Aah, Yankees cahn't make it gauys, and own behaaf of dah Noo Yaork Powleece Deeparhtment, yoo aah aarhl undaah aahresht! ".

SLJ
"Hey, what's the good news?"

Al's partner comeson and says it's Al's Birthday and forces all the arrested felons to join in and drink a toast to him. What a pisstake!!

They would soon star together in Kickboxer.
