Quite frankly I was really impressed with his performance in Cocktail. The way he threw those cocktail shakers around - outstanding.

I am sorta taken aback with Cruise being nominated for an Oscar for Jerry Maguire. I keep trying to read something into his acting in this film looking for a reason why they'd think him so good in this. It may well be the third best thing he's done but that ain't really saying that much. I also find him awkward and cringeful at times in this movie, struggling to keep up with the film and especially with all his scenes with Cuba Gooding Jr. who really is the main reason for this film. Full of energy, naturalism and all different kinds of emotions being fleshed out. With him I thought there were many moments that felt real.

Let's not talk about his physical shape and conviction to his football player role. Everyone made such great praise and congragulations for the fact that he gained an extra 2000 pounds to play his guy, but by British standards I think that's an awful salary.

Influenced by "Ubik".

Which may very well be a film itself soon.

I realize this is old, but where did you hear this and can you post a link to your source?

I can't find anything that says Alejandro Amenábar's Abre Los Ojos was influenced by "Ubik". In fact, I read that Amenábar came up with the idea after having nightmares while sick.

Born On The Fourth Of July, without a doubt his finest moment. I enjoyed Vanilla Sky but prefered the original.

I think though that Tropic Thunder may yet be his all time greatest performance ever!! We shall soon know... :D

strangely i never voted in this poll.

I've been very meh about Cruise pretty much forever. If you're emotionally invested in the outcome of the poll my vote can be purchased for $5.

new here... and my first post involves Top Gun... awesome... .

When I think of Cruise it will always been TG, "I feel the Need", "switching to guns", "you're going to do what?". That movie was the definition of cool until I got laid for the first time.

(Note : i have never been laid)

I think he gave his best performance in Mission Impossible 3. He brought such an emotional intensity to that story. It made the film so much fun and imho one of the best action movies ever made. Better and more exciting then Casino Royale. At least to me.

I have to agree with Moo's statement. Tom Cruise has always been there but when it comes to striking performances, he's never been in any top ten list or given anything which has risen him out of above average rankings.

There are other A list stars who are equally as famous that have more impressive performances.

Harry's DVD PICKS & PEEKS - 1st 2weeks of June 2012: COLOR OF MONEY, YELLOW SUB, THE STING, SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT and so much more!!!
Harry wrote:THE COLOR OF MONEY BluRay

1986 – I was a Sophmore in High School. I had a regulation pool table in my bedroom. I saw THE COLOR OF MONEY. I watched this film and always paid attention to the placement of the cue upon the ball, the angles they shot, the type of stroke with the cue. I taught myself how to do most every shot in this movie. My mother was dating a Pool Hustler at the time, he’d go into honky tonk bars throughout North Texas, dragging my studly ass in. He’d get blind drunk and bet folks his “idiot redheaded stepchild” could beat them for double or nothing. I never lost. I even was given the nickname RoundTimbers Fats, my Ranch is in a place called Round Timbers. And yeah… We all have films that defined periods of our lives. The films we became obsessed with. Tom Cruise & Paul Newman? Directed by Martin Scorsese? The sequel to the legendary film THE HUSTLER, which I discovered around the time this movie came out. It came out the same year as TOP GUN, which was in turn, the same year that THX started to rock our lobes. Black shirt, levis, plaid overshirt… I remember them well. Playing pool is such an incredibly wonderful feeling. It is one of the number one things I can’t wait to get back to after I’ve left this chair. Don’t forget that John Turturro’s in this! Heh. Fast Eddie Felson is one of my favorite all time cinematic characters. I love him as the brash son of a bitch, and I love him as a guiding force in this. There’s a brilliant updating of his character… showing the scars of the previous film. I didn’t get an advance on this, but I’m picking it up today. Must see the felt of the table. Scorsese did a great job on this flick. So great!
