80's Comedy Face-off - Round One: Tom Hanks

Postby Doc Holliday on Wed Feb 07, 2007 8:49 am

Time for a Fatal 4-way of 80's comedy greats.

Simple enough - there'll be four rounds during which you vote for the best from each of the four actor's filmography for the Eighties - then there'll be a final vote between the top-ranking film from each, in order to decide the undisputed King.

Round One then - and here's hoping you all remember back to when Tom Hanks was funny...

Me, I choose The 'Burbs, easily my favourite Hanks comedy. The whole cast were great and I think the 'Extreme Close-Up!' moment of "That's Walter!" whilst holding a large leg-bone will always make me laugh, no matter how many times I see it.

Props to Bruce Dern in this movie, also.

I went for Turner and Hooch. It has a real special place in my heart and I think Hanks is genuinely funny, he has to work hard to spar comedically with a dog and he pulls it off

Base Common Denominator stuff I know....but the scene where Hooch has farted in the station house makes me laugh every time.

I nearly went with The Money Pit, but no - The'Burbs edged it come the final analysis.

the Burbs followed closely by Turner and Hooch for me.

But I would have voted for Joe vs the Volcano if it was on there...

It came out in 1990 so I ruthlessly applied the rules. Shame in a way though - I think quite a few people would have voted for that one. I remember thinking it looked shit when it came out - but I think I called that wrong, I've met that many people who liked it. I still haven't seen it

He did a run of eps on Family Ties that I recall as being as funny as much of his film work, and Punchline is probably my favorite Hanks role, although I guess it's not straight out comedy.

Has anyone else seen much of his ill-fated sitcom 'Bosom Buddies'?

Went for The 'Burbs too.

Go watch the Burbs Dino... its a very good comedy, and probably Hanks at the height of his 80s career.

I never saw eitehr Family Ties or Bosom Buddies - sounds like I've missed out :(

No votes yet for Dragnet or Bachelor Party! Have to admit, I didn't find either of those films funny the first time I saw them - though Bachelor Party got better with a few repeat viewings.

I can remember one laugh out loud moment from each - in DRAGNET it was the simple genius of shouting "Look out! Muppets!" during a car chase (and then driving into a stall selling Muppet toys) - and in BACHELOR PARTY, well, I'm back to my base lowest common denominator again, but just the sight of a bloke's naked ass suddenly busting through a car's sunroof did have me spitting my popcorn on the head of the person in front of me...

I went with BIG too, but only because it was funny at the time, and nice to think that you could work in a toy store and get payed for it when you got older. I think now though that it wouldn't be quite so funny or entertaining....

(and the music when the Zoltan machine used to be on, used to scare me too)

Heheh, my memory's pretty fuzzy without going back to IMDB. He's an average joe who for some reason descends an escalator and is mistaken for a cold-war era spy, thus comedy ensues!

I don't remember why I liked it, but I did... really can't remember much about it at all!

Big was awesome though. :D

Why so little love for Splash!? Easily the best of the bunch. Plus, if the use the pause button carefully I'm pretty sure you get to see a bit of Daryl Hanna's tities.

I think you can as well, especially in the underwater sequences...just use that pause button at strategic moments.

To be honest, I haven't seen the others since the 80s, and I don't remember them very well. But the Money Pit was on TV recently, and that scene where the bathtub falls through the floor and Tom laughs insanely had me laughing until beer came out my nose.

I voted for Bachelor Party!!!

Cole Whittier: Rick, I want Debbie. You dump her and I'll give you cash. Ten thousand dollars, plus a G.E. toaster over; a Litton microwave; a Cuisinart; Michelin tires, brand new; a set of Sears' best metric tools...

Rudy: Let's have a bachelor party with chicks and guns and fire trucks and hookers and drugs and booze!
Gary: Yeah! Yeah yeah! All the things that make life worth living for!

Hotel Manager: Just where do you think you are?
Jay O'Neill: The Library of Congress?
Rudy: Detroit?
Brad: Beyond the sun?

Rick Gassko: It's time for spice, and the lucky spice is... paprika! "Oh thank you, thank you! You've made me the happiest spice in the world!"

Cole Whittier: The car has low mileage and handles like a dream.
Rick Gassko: Well, so does Debbie.

Brad: Hi, come on in! Drugs to the right, hookers to the left.

O'Neill: I wish I had someone I could really respect. Hey, look at the cans on that bimbo!

Rick Gassko: What the hell are you doing?
Brad: I'm slashing my wrist.
Rick Gassko: With an electric razor?
Brad: Yeah, I couldn't find any razor blades.
Rick Gassko: Well at least your wrist will be smooth and kissable.

And why did someone call Bosom Buddies "ill-fated"? It might not have had a long run, but people loved this show.

yes.
he played Steven Keaton's alcoholic younger brother, who was also the idol of young Alex P. Keaton's adoration. it was great. there was this one episode where steven tried to get hanks a job at his public broadcasting station, but hank's booze fueled bumbling fucked things up for both of them.
classic

tapehead wrote:Has anyone else seen much of his ill-fated sitcom 'Bosom Buddies'?

yes.
it starred (among others) Hank's co-star in "Bachelor Party", the recently deceased Wendy Jo Sperber. the show is pretty funny still, even if a little dated. here is a little bit of Bosom Buddies trivia that i bet you dont know. Tom Hanks has been pining for years to do a Bosom Buddies movie. he loved being on the show, and has always said that he would love to do a movie. but get this Peter Scolari won't do it. i think mr. scolari just has so much on his plate, that he just doesnt have the time, or need the money, quite frankly.

incidentally, i too selected "The 'Burbs"
funniest part is when bruce dern's foot goes through the klopek's porch, and he says "there go the goddamn brownies".
absolutely fucking priceless.
i love that movie.

In fairness to Hanks, he is pretty adept at both comedy and drama, unlike, say, Will Smith who just comes across as totally smug in the former and mostly unconvincing in the latter.

I was gonna go for Burbs, purely for Corey saying 'Pizza dude!', but the giant keyboard scene with Robert Loggia trumped it so I went with Big.
