I really liked him in Scrooged, and he carries that movie more, but Ghostbusters is one of my all-time favorite films. It's just so fun and has so many memorable moments/lines.

I saw Ghostbusters at the movies when I was 10 and I love it and everything but I dont consider it Bill Murray's finest hour. He was part of a good ensemble in Ghostbusters and he had some funny lines and scenes, but in Stripes he was the damn King of the movie. He was the man in that. He actually had a character arc and went from being a bum to being the big toe!!

People arent choosing Ghostbusters in this poll because of Bill, theyre choosing it because of the whole package/cult status.

Peter Venkman Vs John Winger? Winger gets my vote every time.

Ghostbusters is the only movie I've seen in a theatre more than once. Actually I saw it 3 times before it left theatres.

Probably not Bill's best but it got my vote all the same.

I agree with Dino - there's bound to be some level of nostalgia with all these threads - but you got to try to look at them in retrospect, with a little perspective - I watched Caddyshack a few months ago and liked it even more as it had elements of satire of American society that escaped me up until my last regular viewings at around 13 or 14. I'd never really considered how much of the dialogue seemed to be ad-libbed comedy riffing, particularly from Chase and Murray - pretty impressive. Ghostbusters 2 was on Sky last week, and while fun, I couldn't be bothered staying focused on it for any length of time. I know Ghostbusters was a better movie, but it's very much a general release one for kids and children of all ages. If something came out like it now, it wouldn't be under heavy discussion here.
I got to watch Stripes again, but I'm happy to stand by my vote for Caddyshack.

Poor kirk, always the bitch-slapped - never the pimp.

Dino, if you know me at all you should know I rarely get to read much these days. So trust that I had no idea what others had said previous to my post. My intention was certainly not to annoy or encourage those who do. I was just being honest. If I've offended you my mistake, it was kirks fault.

That's right, I think its been long enough that things have remained "Herc's fault" and I'm letting him off the proverbial hook.

Yep! you heard it here first - Kirks fault! or perhaps kirks mom's fault :o

yes indeed, but with zero votes, so far its unanimous - as the other two with no votes very few of us have seen.

In the case of Loose Shoes, AKA Coming Attractions - Murray's only in one skit in the movie anyway.

I've been wondering that myself, BR - maybe it was '79, or maybe it's because he was kind of a co-star with Boyle... lets ask Doc tomorrow, 'cos it is a really good performance, less of a Hunter charicature than Depp's in Fear and Loathing (although from the documentaries I've seen, Murray had HST down), but very good and very funny - although it's not strictly a comedy, I guess.

I like Stripes too, but Ghostbusters really sticks with me. Some of the humor in Stripes seems a little too "base." It's maybe a bit too many tit jokes or something. You know.

And therein lies the rub I'm afraid. :(

There's a whole bunch of grey areas on each and every one of these poles - I'm giving them all thought, but I'm not going to be able to please everyone I'm afraid.

Dino makes good points too - but its not for me to tell people how to vote, I mean, I'm not Dubya y'know

When I first thought of doing these it was off the back of remembering all these great 80's comedies, back in the day when they were new films - it strikes me as a genuine golden era for comedy - long before Sandler and the Wayan Brothers took over.

When I vote, I'm taking myself back to when I first saw them, caught in the time that they were released with that whole 80's vibe together with being a spotty teen that thought illuminous socks were cool (they were - but only if you wore mismatched colours).

So some of my own choices are in keeping with that - at this present moment in time I would rate SCROOGED above STRIPES which itself would only just edge out GHOSTBUSTERS into third.

But back in the day I was a bit too young to fully appreciate STRIPES beyond the more obvious gags - and yes, the mud-wrestling. SCROOGED was great - but GHOSTBUSTERS was mega...it was practically an event. But I'm keeping in mind I'm voting for the performance here, not the film - and in fact its precisely because it was an ensemble - and a damn strong one at that - that GHOSTBUSTERS got my vote. Because for as funny as Ray Stantz was, it was Venkman's lines that I remembered and mimicked the very next day.

Which all kinda touches on what Kirk's been saying about Murray's ability as an actor - everyone else played their part for laughs in GHOSTBUSTERS, but in more a traditional slapstick way - but Murray, even then, was able to infuse his character with a greater depth - particularly in his scenes with Weaver. And even though I couldn't have described that as well back then, I certainly picked up on it.

So it gets my vote.

And Goonies was great.

But Dino is right - think about what you're voting for, because what you don't want, come the Grand Final, is your favourite actor not winning because the film that is representing them isn't the best.

Yeh, OK, I am Dubya after all - don't make me invade you... :P

I voted for Scrooged...while sadness fills me be GroundHog Day isn;t there, the other rolls were more of a supporting nature, where here in scrooged as well as Groundhog day He was classicly hilarious as well as able to carry the movie himself. Something very few comedian/actors can do. I would also like to give an honorable mention to Rushmore which is not in the poll as well as What about Bob? these two flicks along with GHD should have been in the poll....just sayin' is all.
