The Official Overrated Actors/Actresseseses Thread

KON presents:

From an idea by So Sorry...

The Official Overrated Actors/Actresseseses Thread

& im posting it in movie reviews rather than general interest as it's sort of reviewing performances, innit?

This thread is exactly what the title says it is.
Think Harvey Kitel is a waste of budget?
Don't get what the deal is with Nicole Kidman?
Couldn't understand why Molly Ringwald was in a shit load of teen movies back in the 80's?

Discuss all of the above & more, here, in The Official Overrated Actors/Actresseseses Thread!

John Malkovich. He was good in "In The Line Of Fire", but pretty ordinary in most other things I've seen him in. And he was impossibly, sleepwalkingly awful in "The Man In The Iron Mask".

Mostly, the guy doesn't have it.

You want me to define overrated for you?

Be they famous as hell or not, if they're shit then they're not really rated at all, i guess it's in the eye of the beholder.

for instance, there's no point in mentioning Tara Reid in this thread, i don't even think she believes she's a good actress.

Gabriel Byrne. Save for The Usual Suspects/Millers Crossing he's been pretty dreary.

I don't know why Meryl Streep is always brought up in lists of America's most versatile actresses. She's either really weepy and emotional (The Deer Hunter), or the waspy Ice Queen (Manhattan). I really don't see much range in between.

Never saw any range. He may be in some decent movies but he's never been anything more than acceptable.

Magnolia is the only thing hes done with any range.

It's the foreign accent trick. In which case, I'm a far better actress than Streep. We should stage a show-down for charity.

Word. She can act, but lets not get carried away.

Edward Norton is the same for me. Also, Zach Braff has started to really become overrated and poor as Scrubs has gone on. By S6 he's the king of the gurn.

I've never really liked the guy, even before the whole Scientology/ going mental on Oprah thing.

Exact same thing with Nicolas Cage, sure i've seen good films he's been in & there have been a few good performances, but overall he irritates the hell outta me. It's the manuerisms more than anything.

Zach Braff could do quite a bit. He writes and directs and acts so maybe he will get better over time.

Good choice. I loved him in Fight Club and American History X. But if I'm honest with myself, he's another impressionist posing as an actor (see The Painted Veil and The Illusionist).

I'm not saying he's bad. But 'best actor of his generation' is pushing it. Mind you, that always pushes it.

I'm gonna go out on a limb & say De Niro.
I don't mean overall, i mean, how can i explain this?
If i was casting for a movie & it called for a Robert De Niro type actor, i'd hire someone else & they'd do a better De Niro than De Niro.

Seriously, him & Christopher Walken have been "phoning it in" for at least the last 10 years.

If De Niro circa 1975 traveled through time & met up with the modern day De Niro, he'd kill him, or quite possibly go back in time & kill himself.

GANDHI.
SEXY BEAST.
SCHINDLER'S LIST.
From what I hear, THE WACKNESS.
One of my personal favorites of his, as Dr. Watson in WITHOUT A CLUE.

He's been in some clunkers, to be sure, but he's not overrated in the least.

His work in LLV is one of the great cinema performances. It's up there with Stanley Kowalski and Christy Brown.

He's also excellent in Vampire's Kiss, Birdy, Kiss Of Death and Raising Arizona

Well lets take your post on Ben Kingsley there.
Chill was saying how he didn't get the hype & you recommended some good Kingsley films to him, so, maybe Chilli will go check out some of the movies you listed & his opinion on Ben will change eh?
Maybe you've broadened a fellow Zoners film tastes?

It's just an example.

I didn't intend on this thread being another one of pointless lists of who we don't like. That's why it's not "The Shit Actors Thread" or whatever.

D.rew Barrymore. Why she isn't working in a vegan co-op coffee house in Silver Lake for 8 bucks an hour by now is beyond me.

Sorry, Juno's Army, but Ellen Page annoys the bejeezus out of me. I'm sure she'll improve with age, but for now... bah. BAH!

It's a good one.

I think some of his performances are crap, but it wouldn't hurt to rewatch Schindlers List/Ghandi (both films I never got a real context for, being rather young when I watched them) and see whether he rose to the occassion.

Hell no, the thread should be about discussion, not a list.
We've got far to many list type threads & as far as i'm concerned, they add nothing to this place.

So, yeah keep it civil, but make it long & discuss it.

As i said above...

Aniston gets work cause she was in friends. Arguably, Friends kicked ass for about 5 seasons. I'm not a huge fan of her movie career, but she was alright in Bruce Almighty.

As for the rest, erm, Owen Wilson was good in Bottle Rocket, he's been playing the same kinda part every time since though.

Shit, i almost forgot, Vince Vaughn was awesome in Swingers.

The problem with most of the people you listed, they make what i like to call "disposable movies".
The kind of thing you'll sit & watch if there's nothing else on TV & then almost immediately forget the movie when it's done.

Scarlett excluded, because everyone seems to remember & like Lost In Translation, which i thought was completely overrated, but that belongs in another thread somewhere. She was alright in Ghost World i suppose.

Daniel Craig!

He is a 100% charisma-free man, whose acting consists of 1 1/2 facial expressions! He is definitely the worst Bond ever. And I even thought that he was a bad actor, before I knew his name! I remember watching TOMB RAIDER and complaining (among other things) about the lame villain. I remember him annoying me in LAYER CAKE, without even knowing that he was the same lame-o from TOMB RAIDER. When he became Bond I (like everybody else) looked him up at imdb and saw him attached to several movies that I've seen, but couldn't the fuck remember him, because he just never gave a performance that was worth remembering and I'm sure that the producers gave him the Bond-part, just because they were running out of time and couldn't find someone else!

Yes.

If they weren't popular, than I hardly think they would be over-rated...

That's like claiming to hate something that doesn't exist...

Or making a random reference about one of your nightmares to a complete stranger...

Exactly...

ETA: Hilary Swank and Julia Roberts...

I have no fucking clue how The Next Karate Kid has 2 Oscars...
And I have no fucking clue how Julia Roberts is not being made to wear her saddle and reigns in public...

Is he really overrated though. There aren't many who hold him in high regard for his acting...are there?

He's a movie star, not an actor.

Helloooo Born on the 4th of July and Eyes Wide Shut?

I think Born on the 4th of July, and possibly Collateral, are his two exceptions.

But in pretty much everything else, Eyes Wide Shut included, he is playing Tom Cruise: Movie Star.

What about Rain Man?
I'd like to throw The Outsiders into the mix, but he's in it for all of maybe 60 seconds.
And Austin Powers: Goldmember, 10 seconds i think.

It was exactly 8012.07821 seconds long.

Tom Cruise was playing Tom Cruise in that movie, however.

Nah, if Tom Cruise was playing Tom Cruise in that movie, he would've forced Hoffman to take part in audits to "cure" his autism, which just turned out to be bad thetans, they would've traveled to Clearwater Florida instead of LA & more than likely, he would get the 3 million, but it'd be going to COS.
