Best Performance - Tom Hanks

Postby Worst Part's Almost Over on Sun Aug 03, 2008 5:48 pm

There are a few films that Hanks has done that I have really enjoyed his performances in. Despite sometimes seeming one-dimensional as an actor, he really does have range and has delivered enough great performances that I found myself struggling to decide which one I'd pick. Woody is a classic, Paul Edgecombe is so heartfelt and I can watch his turn as Andrew Beckett again and again.

In the end though, I chose Michael Sullivan in Road To Perdition because it is a role that seems very un-Tom Hanks, but which he makes his own and delivers a remarkable performance. He plays against type and wins - from the quiter, thought-provoking moments with his son and his surrogate father, to the tommy gun wielding killer moments, Hanks creates a character that is without redemption and beyond pity. And yet we somehow understand why his life is what it is and we route for him until the end.

If I was going purely on my own nostalgia, I'd have chosen Big, but Road To Perdition gets my vote as the best performance of Tom Hanks' career so far. Over to you, folks...

I voted for Road to Perdition as well because (a) Tom Hanks played a dick and (b) I'm much more impressed by what an actor can pull off AFTER they've been wanked off by everyone for a performance that consequently gets them a ton of awards... and it's happened to Tom Hanks like twice in a row, so nearly ten years later when he plays a major asshole it was not only a refreshing addition to the Tom Hanks cast of characters, but also a very welcome sign of evolution in the bastard. <-- Meant nicely of course...

i gave it to 'Big'. can really buy him as a 12-year-old kid.

but there's a lot of good performances. hanks is one actor who's earned his excessive stardom.

EDIT: and no option for "the man with one red shoe"? for shame!

I'd love to know who voted for You've Got Mail. I never saw the movies, but them Meg Ryan romantic comedies don't really give a lot of range for Hanks to display his acting chops. I voted for BIG. I couldn't distinguish between Hanks as an adult and that little boy who played Young Tom Hanks. Usually I see the difference between the actors, but this movie was seemless. Then Hanks transforms from a big kid to an actual adult without losing the character. I also really liked how he changed from a suicidal super depressed guy to a man with a plan in Joe Versus The Volcano. I don't recall that option, but I would still pick Big over it. I find it hard to judge Hanks after this because anything after Sleepless in Seattle set the bar super high for the guy and he'll never really blow you away again.

I've seen both - been so long I can't remember what I first knew it as.
I'd imagine the copyright holders of the D&D games weren't to fond of that name as the title.

Seeing that movie in the early 80's scared the shit out of me and made me want to never play Dungeons & Dragons.

Hey kids! Dress like a woman and make sure only one of your shoes is red.
Then make sure you don't play D&D, volunteer for anything, or buy a shitty house.
Then you too can date a mermaid and if you're lucky, you might magically become 30 overnight!!

Money Pit. I always liked Hanks more as a comedic actor, and he was hysterical in Money Pit. One of my favorite scenes in all of filmdom is when he steps on the carpet and sinks through a whole in the floor and gets stuck there. His performance in that scene is teh r0xx0r.

Why is your opinion the only one that matters...?

Would you like to make a list of subjects you like to discuss so we don't run into this problem again...?

Why enter a thread about Tom Hanks if you don't care about Tom Hanks...?

That'd be like me visiting Quebec...

ETA: And I voted for Dragnet...

But I loved that film as a kid...

Arguably...

And I guess there's a reason why I almost voted for Bachelor Party this time...

In the other thread:

havocSchultz wrote:I voted for Bachelor Party!!!

Cole Whittier: Rick, I want Debbie. You dump her and I'll give you cash. Ten thousand dollars, plus a G.E. toaster over; a Litton microwave; a Cuisinart; Michelin tires, brand new; a set of Sears' best metric tools...

Rudy: Let's have a bachelor party with chicks and guns and fire trucks and hookers and drugs and booze!
Gary: Yeah! Yeah yeah! All the things that make life worth living for!

Hotel Manager: Just where do you think you are?
Jay O'Neill: The Library of Congress?
Rudy: Detroit?
Brad: Beyond the sun?

Rick Gassko: It's time for spice, and the lucky spice is... paprika! "Oh thank you, thank you! You've made me the happiest spice in the world!"

Cole Whittier: The car has low mileage and handles like a dream.
Rick Gassko: Well, so does Debbie.

Brad: Hi, come on in! Drugs to the right, hookers to the left.

O'Neill: I wish I had someone I could really respect. Hey, look at the cans on that bimbo!

Rick Gassko: What the hell are you doing?
Brad: I'm slashing my wrist.
Rick Gassko: With an electric razor?
Brad: Yeah, I couldn't find any razor blades.
Rick Gassko: Well at least your wrist will be smooth and kissable.

Good times...

Now I don't know what to vote for...

I'll settle on Turner & Hooch I guess...

It was, and had 97% more DocH.

Tom Hanks was best in Apollo 13, which was also a film that had a spacecraft in it. Apollo 13 wins, even with a broken spacecraft.

Ah...I see...
Because somebody likes (or doesn't like) something you do, than they're lying or just fucking around...

Please, tell us, what is the film/actor we should be talking about then...?

And, once again, I re-iterate, if you don't give a fuck about a subject, or you only come into a topic to try and tear down the people in it, what's the point?!?!?!?

Is it a call for attention?
Are you so desperate for somebody to talk to you that you have to resort to insults and and what-not just to get a response...?

Because if you disagree with anything he says, he'll send you angry worded PM telling you to delete what you said or he'll report you...

I voted for Road to Perdition too...
I believed that Hanks could be a Cold Blooded killer and a caring dad.....
And he fucking killed Paul Newman! In one of the best scenes ever put on Film!

It was in regards to the "A-List" thread or something...
Where he was telling any and everybody if they say they go to a movie because of story, and not because who is in it, they're stupid and they're lying...

I called him on it and he sent the afore mentioned PM...
I can forward it to you if you'd like...
He never did reply to me after I sent him one back...

Alas...

I might never know his A/S/L...

well, after all these years, we still don't know Pacina's A/S/L either....

Whats A/S/L?

A/S/L = Age Sex Location

Road To Perdition came in a close second for me.
I voted Philadelphia as his best performance. I found that his performance in that movie completely eclipsed the movie itself.
I thoroughly enjoyed Road To Perdition a lot more, though.
